Shall I take up drinking coffee?

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 26/07/2020 21:43

I don't drink hot drinks and my last foray into coffee was back in uni days. It then made me need the loo a lot and not just for a wee
But now other mum friends talk of coffee as if it is an elixir they cant live without. I am mostly exhausted so think I should start drinking it.
If you agree, pls add your suggestions as to what I should start with. I have a sweet tooth Blush

One shot caramel macchiato (Starbucks).

morefun · 26/07/2020 21:47

Well, guess you don't want to overdo it if you don't normally drink it. I don't drink caffeine after 11am generally (just decaf).

Depends if you're in when you have the coffee or out. If at home I like an Azera coffee - I make it strong (2 teaspoons) but with enough milk too (I dunno, 50-60ml, I don't measure it), and a half spoon of sugar.

I would've suggested cappuccino, they're good, but you might find that you put on some weight if you start drinking those all day.

If you have a sweet tooth try a latte, maybe with a shot of flavoured syrup. There are a lot of calories in it though!

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 26/07/2020 21:50

I can't afford the calories so how would a sweetener like Stevia work?
I do like hot chocolate but not tea.

I started drinking coffee sweet and creamy. Lots of full fat milk and a sugar or two. I still like plenty of milk or cream but have weaned off the sugar.

midsomermurderess · 26/07/2020 21:51

I'd not bother. I do like the occasional cup of good coffee but the whole Starbucks/Costa, can't function without my coffee culture passed me by. I'm a bit baffled by it.

worldweary45 · 26/07/2020 21:55

Coffee has a laxative effect for lots of people

Don't go mad with it Grin

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 26/07/2020 21:56

@midsomermurderess but I want to get into coffee

A 'wet' latte (this means no foam). Add lots of sugar. Yum.

ScrapThatThen · 27/07/2020 08:30

Try the Duo cappuccino instant ones from the supermarket with a little sugar at first. Sadly I have made dd2, 14, into a coffee drinker over lockdown. Well, me and early morning English lessons that she doesn't want to do.

Fifthtimelucky · 27/07/2020 08:51

Why do you want to 'get into coffee'? There are better ways of addressing tiredness.

Coffee is not good for you, if you have a sweet tooth you'll probably end up having lots of sugar in it to make it palatable to you, and it costs a lot.

Some people can't live without alcohol, tobacco or a whole range of prescription or non-prescription drugs. That's no reason for other people to start using them!

Grumblyberries · 27/07/2020 09:25

I started with mochas and other sweet drinks, then weaned off the sugar, to plain cappuccinos and then flat whites.

I still like the milk though, more than the actual coffee! I do love the smell of the coffee though.

I prefer going out for one as a result, though I do have my own cappuccino maker at home now. I don't like the instant.

Unlike many people, I quite like the taste of Starbucks coffee, as it's not too strong. I find Caffe Nero really strong. I use independent shops a lot too, and sometimes they're good and sometimes not. Because I like the milk frothy, that's more important to me than the coffee, which is the opposite of the independent shops.

I think it's nice to be able to drink it, so that you can go out and meet other people for coffee, without having to search for something to have.

If you have a cappuccino, you can ask for less coffee compared to the milk, to start with. ('one shot' instead of 'two', for a smaller size).

Be careful if you go to one of the chain shops, that you look at the size of the drinks you are ordering - they have odd names, and are much bigger than you expect!! They're happy for you to ask if you don't know what you want - don't be put off by all the people knowing exactly what they want and fancy words.

Poetryinaction · 27/07/2020 10:44

Much better to get into herbal teas or something.

Codexdivinchi · 27/07/2020 10:49

Don’t go down that road if you don’t need too!
Shop bought coffees can very calorific especially if you start adding syrups because you like them sweet. I spend a fortune on coffee every year 😭 I have a oat milk cappuccino addiction.

You might as well just have a energy tablet Grin

JanewaysBun · 27/07/2020 10:51

I love it but can't drink it as I crash immediately after having a cup. I'm really sensitive to caffeine.

How about herbal teas to give you a psychological boost?

JanewaysBun · 27/07/2020 10:52

You might be similar to me with the loo thing too, I think it's when you are really sensitive to the caffeine that happens

Esthermoo01 · 27/07/2020 10:55

I gave up coffee last year after drinking it for years and it was the best thing I've done. It's super addictive and when I was tired it just made me buzzy, anxious, ratty with my kids and stressed. I sleep better without it and no longer feel I need it. I drink decaf now. I wouldn't get into it if you're fine without. Also upsets my tummy too. Other hot drinks like herbal teas are pleasant to drink and actually have some health benefits. You can get a smaller amount of caffeine in green teas...the Twyinngs (sp?) Orange and lotus flower green tea is delish x

lazylinguist · 27/07/2020 10:58

Taking up coffee to combat tiredness might not be the best plan. It can really mess with your sleep, probably especially if you're not used to it. I like the taste of it but am really sensitive to caffeine- strong coffee makes me jittery and stops me sleeping at night even if I drink it mid-morning! I drink good quality ground decaf.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 28/07/2020 01:07

Ok thank you. I think you have persuaded me not to go down that route, mainly due to the calories.
I sooo love the smell. Anytime I make coffee for a guest, I always take a surreptitious sniff. Wink
Obviously no guests in a while....

This reminds me of me a bit. I don’t drink coffee, well any hot drinks really. It feels so unsociable to keep saying no..I want to join in, and people look a bit crestfallen when they can’t include me.

Everyone I work with was thrilled when Costa opened again. I love the smell of it and all the names of the coffees in coffee shops sound great. I have tried but always burn my mouth and lose interest in it.

The whole coffee (and tea) ritual bypasses me utterly. If only the wine one had too. But on that I’m more than happy to partake.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 28/07/2020 07:48

Here are my coffee drinking top tips!!

Avoid instant coffee - even expensive ones like Starbucks.

Buy yourself a metal Italien style expresso maker that goes on the hob- they look like they are very complicated but they are very simple.
M&S ground coffee - any number 3 is a good one to start with like Lazy Sunday.
Take Oatly Barista milk and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Pour coffee in and enjoy!

This now has two effects - it has a slow down ritual attached to it and in my opinion makes the best coffee and I have all the ways to make it in my house. (Cafetiere, drip, pod machine, instant).

I love coffee!!

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 28/07/2020 07:49

Using Oatly Barrista (It's in a grey carton - do not go for lesser/other brands/or even other Oatly brands!) will keep the carbs and the cals low.

TheChineseChicken · 28/07/2020 07:50

Frothy whole milk is good for sweetness I find without adding sugar. We make coffee at home with lots of foam and it’s better than anything from a coffee shop. Fresh bean to cup espresso machine with milk frother

Squigglypig2 · 28/07/2020 07:53

I love coffee but if you don't drink it I wouldn't get into it, as giving up caffeine again is awful. 1 week of headaches.
