I cancelled my holiday at 2am and now I regret it

Booked a train ticket to south of france for last week of August months and months ago - camping, in a rural area.

I am moving house at some point this month, got a bit nervy about travel, spain quarantine, the virus, wearing a face mask for 6 hours on the train. Hit 'request e voucher' at 2am and now feel really sad. It was going to be my way to recharge for 5 days.

Should I call euro star and beg to cancel my cancellation, or do you think I made the right choice?

It absolutely sucks op, but there was a reason you cancelled.

plunkplunkfizz · 26/07/2020 08:57

Book again with your voucher?

waytheleaveswork · 26/07/2020 08:58

If I rebook with the voucher, it's an extra £200, and the voucher takes 28 days to process.

It does suck but I think you've done the right thing OP given the situation in Spain. We've cancelled a holiday too Sad

WutheringFrights · 26/07/2020 09:01

I can guarantee if you rebook you will regret it and want to cancel again!
Your reasons for cancelling haven’t changed and you will feel less anxious about all the other things you have to do.
Rebook it for some time in the future and know that you have something to look forward to rather than something to worry about.

GreyGardens88 · 26/07/2020 09:03

I wouldn't have cancelled, I'm going to Italy in August and I haven't cancelled it. Mind you the flights only cost £18

waytheleaveswork · 26/07/2020 09:04

Thanks, I know you're right.

Without outing myself, it's not really the idea of the holiday - I would be visiting a particular place for a couple of days that is really important to me. I guess I will just have to wait another year.

Only time will tell if you made the right choice unfortunately, it's very hard for anyone with a holiday booked for the next couple of months

If you leave it now at least you have certainty and won't spend the next few weeks worrying about what might happen. If that would be too stressful for you you've made the right decision.

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 09:07

I think you did the right thing. A French holiday has now become a gamble, rather than a relaxing break.
Book yourself a couple of nights away in a UK hotel for a change of scenery.

I work in a school so if 14 day quarantine was re-introduced, I would miss the start of term, which is not something I (or my employer!) would be OK with.

The spain quarantine coming on overnight is probably what has tipped it for me too.

But still, hard to miss out on my one chance for a holiday this year.

You’ve done the right thing OP. You’d feel more unsure as it got closer. Do something else for yourself, I know it won’t be the same but worth postponing until everything’s more settled. Sorry you’ve missed out.

itsgettingweird · 26/07/2020 12:32

I think you've done the right thing.

My holiday was cancelled weeks ago. To Majorca.

I've had the hardest year and my weeks AI and having no responsibility to cook and clean was needed more than ever.

But instead of being sad I decided to see it as an opportunity.

An opportunity to visit kids if local places I've never been to.

To eat takeaway which I don't usually do and do theme parks which I don't usually do. And I don't usually do them because I can't afford that and a holiday.

Our week away each year is a "it's always yes to having something" week.

We have decided to have a summer like this.
Can I have an ice cream - yes! No penny pinching or having to make decisions.

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 12:37

Why wouldn't you consider booking something in UK OP? May not be as warm, but at least a chance to go away and enjoy different surroundings.

waytheleaveswork · 26/07/2020 12:45

I have a 4 day break booked in the lake district next week, so I am aware I am very lucky to still have a holiday.

I think I am annoyed at myself as I didn't need to cancel it yet, and I made a rash decision at a stupid time which is very unlike me.

Bluepolkadots42 · 26/07/2020 12:48

@itsgettingweird what a great way to look at the situation! I hope you all enjoy your 'say yes' summer.
OP- it is a really hard situation, but I think you've made the right choice. As others have said- at least now you don't have to deal with stress and uncertainty. If you can afford to then definitely book a few nights away somewhere in the UK, just so you can have a few 'chore free' days.

Orangeblossom78 · 26/07/2020 12:54

It's done now so enjoy your other break and you have it for another time when things are less stressful. Holidays should be stress free not full of worry about quarantine...

rookiemere · 26/07/2020 12:58

I like to look forward to a holiday. Google where we are staying, plan things to do. When a future holiday becomes a source of stress and discomfort then it's time to let it go. If you didn't lose any money from cancelling, then you made exactly the right decision and at the right time.

Janek · 26/07/2020 12:59

I cancelled a French holiday a couple of weeks ago and the Eurostar vouchers took much less than 28 days to come through. If you can be flexible with your travel dates, which I assume you can if you're off for the summer holidays, why not keep an eye on the Eurostar website and see if you can book something last-minuteish if it seems appropriate (using your vouchers).

Movinghouseatlast · 26/07/2020 13:00

Just book a UK holiday in a nice rural area instead. Much less risky!

tmh88 · 26/07/2020 13:04

OP I don’t blame you! I want to cancel mine, I have paid it off it isn’t until end of October but if I cancel I get no money back if they cancel I get everything back! the stress and uncertainty it’s making me a mess at the minute!

AldiAisleofCrap · 26/07/2020 13:11

So you haven’t given up your one chance of a holiday, the Lake District is lovely and will be much less stressful.

Leflic · 26/07/2020 13:23

You can do the South of France in the October half term. Lovely to have sun when the U.K. is plunging into dark wet winter. Poke the camping though and book a nice cheap off season hotel.

MsSafina · 26/07/2020 13:38

Just been to Italy to see family for a week and got back yesterday. I suppose I've been lucky.
