Wearing a face mask is bloody awful!

shellydolls · 26/07/2020 08:06

Wore one yesterday in the shop for the first time.

I felt like I was suffocating myself!
I felt dizzy!
I couldn't concentrate on my shopping as I felt so uncomfortable and my glasses kept fogging up!

Please can someone recommend a very breathable mask as I won't be out shopping again until I can breath properly.

How about a perspex visor?

For what it is worth, wearing masks is a bit grim but you are now going to get ripped to shreds for mentioning this!

wintersdawn · 26/07/2020 08:12

Totally with you on the glasses steaming up front. I've been wearing them since the beginning for shops and still don't seem to be able to keep glasses from fogging up. Tried all the tricks I've seen.

Cetra638 · 26/07/2020 08:20

I’m nhs and have to wear them all day. You need the proper surgical ones. Look for one with the little wire strip along the nose that pitches the mask tight. It’ll stop your glasses from steaming up.

CherryPavlova · 26/07/2020 08:22

Get a grip. It’s a bit of material.

turnthebiglightoff · 26/07/2020 08:23

No, it's not bloody awful. It's mildly inconvenient. HTH.

ShouldEyeShouldntEye · 26/07/2020 08:23

I got a good cloth one with a filter and a plastic button vent on the side and I can breath better and avoid my glasses fogging up. All the disposable ones make my glasses fog. I don’t know the male as I just bought it from the local corner shop but look out for ones with the plastic button vent on the side.

MrsVMorgan · 26/07/2020 08:24

We have found these to be very comfortable and breathable. www.homebargains.co.uk/products/18588-50-disposable-face-masks-with-ear-loop.aspx

Frownette · 26/07/2020 08:24

I haven't found it too bad; all my masks were given to me but I can find out later where they were bought from.

Only thing is when I get up I usually put on concealer. Then when the time comes to go I have to take it off then put on mask, and carry my concealer to the other end to put it on again when mask comes off.

I have a red patch which I usually cover up Blush

ShouldEyeShouldntEye · 26/07/2020 08:26

When I said plastic button vent I meant valve! Forgot the word. They really help. Like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Re-usable-Washable-Cotton-Face-Mask-with-anti-fog-Respirator-UK-Stock/114250819308?hash=item1a99e126ec:g:FN0AAOSwHDVe27Pn&var=414506375350

I hate the unhelpful HTH posts.Hmm

With wearing glasses I find you have to put the mask very high . Nearly at then bottom of your eyes, the put the glasses over it. Hope that helps OP. Smile

octupiwi · 26/07/2020 08:29

They are horrible - I feel really hot and nauseous in them.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 26/07/2020 08:29

If you use a strip of surgical tape to hold the top of the mask onto your face it stops your glasses fogging up and doesn't hurt when you take it off.

I am frustrated that I can make loads of lovely looking masks in all types of patterns but can't wear them as find the fabric ones too thick and stifling no matter what I make them out of so I stick to the disposables which are lighter.

shellydolls · 26/07/2020 08:29

Thank you. Some good suggestions I will look into.

I hate them.

I’m 34 weeks pregnant and I’m at hospital for monitoring every two days.

It’s hot as hell in there as it is and I’ve fainted twice because of the mask. I keep having to be sick as well. With waiting times I’m there for 4-5 hours so it seems like forever!

It’s horrible but just one of those things I have to suck up. I don’t go anywhere else though, no shops etc so can’t comment on those, just the boiling hot hospital.

I’ve found a neck tube, doubled over and pulled up over my face works much better with my glasses.

shellydolls · 26/07/2020 08:31

@Wilburgh that does sound tough!

I think the masks with an exhalation valve aren't recommended because they allow unfiltered air to escape, and filtering exhaled air is the main point of wearing the face covering.

FizzyPink · 26/07/2020 08:34

I hate them as well. I had lots of chores to do yesterday and I was so sweaty with having to keep putting the mask on to go into each shop. It’s also such a pain with make up. I’ve got a 3 hour hair appointment today and coming straight home to guests so hoping they’re not enforcing masks for customers as per the new rules

BitOfFun · 26/07/2020 08:35

Does this need its own topic? Seems like it.

BrokenBrit · 26/07/2020 08:37

Yes it’s irritating, but we just have to get on with it really I’m afraid.
Nhs staff, including those with asthma, anxiety etc, are doing it for 12 hour shifts so the rest of us, with a few valid exceptions of course, can manage for a shopping trip.

melissasummerfield · 26/07/2020 08:38

Yes i absolutely hate it too , make me feel panicky and sick, and I'm really not that kind of person, I will just stop the already minimal shop visits.

Thisdressneedspockets · 26/07/2020 08:40

People are entitled to feel how they feel.
Feeling like you're suffocating and feeling dizzy is a bit more than mildly inconvenient.

I hope you find something that feels ok for you op. Flowers

The ones with a valve don't actually protect anyone else from you though, which is the point of wearing a mask. You're still breathing all your germs out.

@shellydolls either a surgical mask or a plain cotton fabric mask will be fine and won't effect your breathing or oxygen levels at all.

nitgel · 26/07/2020 08:41

I don't think the thread is helped by comments like 'this needs it's own topic' or 'NHS staff have to wear all the time' type posts.

This is a very strange time. Let's just be nice to each other. FlowersFlowersFlowers
