Wearing a face mask is bloody awful!

Wore one yesterday in the shop for the first time.

I felt like I was suffocating myself!
I felt dizzy!
I couldn't concentrate on my shopping as I felt so uncomfortable and my glasses kept fogging up!

Please can someone recommend a very breathable mask as I won't be out shopping again until I can breath properly.

@Dominicgoings A ventilator would be fine as you are sedated and don't feel a thing. Also they aren't using ventilators as much now.

Potionqueen · 29/07/2020 12:45

@stayingaliveisawayoflife I have just spent 5 mins looking at your photo thinking how does she see before realising you’ve blanked the top half of your face out.
Stupid idiot award of the day to me I think!!!!

A lot of the masks being sold are made out of far heavier materials than surgeon's masks, I've seen 3- and 5-ply mixed fabric material masks which I can see causing more issues for breathing and sight (not just fogging, but narrowing field of vision), so I'm not sure the comparison to surgeons is helpful as if all masks are the same or that there aren't already exemptions for people with certain lung, heart, and circulatory diseases because of the impact masks can have on breathing.

For some people, it may be more important to wear a thinner mask or, when not in medical settings, face visors. I haven't noticed an uptick for me, but my circulatory issues tend to go from the legs up. The only time it's been awful for me was when going to the Life in the UK test, navigated a new area on foot I found it really difficult and lost my balance a lot as I couldn't see in front of me well and then having to pull everything off for the biometric scans before the test and then back on (most just carried them through after that, the place was really not set up for this issue).

Confused

How many patients have you assisted with extubation following ventilation? What equipment have you used to administer high flow oxygen?
Idiot Hmm

Staplemaple · 29/07/2020 18:47

Ah it's been a while since the ventilator line has been trotted out.

DipSwimSwoosh · 29/07/2020 18:57

I plan to never wear one but got a reusable one just in case. I put it in the wash after trying it on and the nose but disappeared. Should I have taken that out first? Hope it doesn't break my washing machine.
I don't wear scarves, high neck tops or long sleeves. I don't wear jewellery or my hair down. I know I will struggle with a mask.

ButterflyRuns · 29/07/2020 18:59

Agreed, but I'm 8 months pregnant so I'll whinge about anything.

@wintersdawn

Totally with you on the glasses steaming up front. I've been wearing them since the beginning for shops and still don't seem to be able to keep glasses from fogging up. Tried all the tricks I've seen.
Take your glasses off? Mine steam up but if I just push them up slightly they clear again.

It’s also such a pain with make up. I’ve got a 3 hour hair appointment today and coming straight home to guests so hoping they’re not enforcing masks for customers as per the new rules

Well aren't you pathetic, selfish and unpleasant ?

CatandtheFiddle · 29/07/2020 19:23

my glasses kept fogging up

My glasses fog up all the time in winter. Just deal with it.

Wearing a mask keeps other people around you safe from a really horrible virus. Just deal.

ODFOD

The self-centredness is un-bel-iev-able

ChaoticCatling · 29/07/2020 19:29

Mine is much too big, not on purpose, but it means I can breathe fine and it's nice and airy.

Staplemaple · 29/07/2020 19:30

Shouldn't be wearing a mask over your hair anyway, or am I doing it wrong?

Vintagevixen · 29/07/2020 21:14

I have assisted in tons of intubations, extubations, CPAP via face mask and hood, high flow oxygen, optiflo and I still object to the ridiculous "its better than a ventilator" line. It's scaremongering and implying that everyone who gets Covid will end up on ITU automatically.

Scotmummy1216 · 29/07/2020 21:17

Try wearing one for 12 hour shifts. You get used to them.

AnnieCartwright · 29/07/2020 21:24

I’m a theatre scrub nurse. I wore one today for a case that was nearly 6 hours long. I cannot Touch or adjust it whilst scrubbed as I need to maintain sterility. It was fine. I then changed into a fresh one for the other 6 and a half hours of my shift.
A lot of the problems are psychological, but the steamed up glasses can be solved by wearing masks with a metal strip across the nose that needs shaping around the nose.

Oh dear lord give me strength. You hope they're not enforcing the rules? Angry

I work in a shop and have to wear one all day. It's a mild inconvenience.
I often wear home-made cloth masks, they are hotter but fit better. The disposable ones are so light in comparison, so while I hate single use plastic they are the ones for you if don't like feeling claustrophobic.

And yes, please don't bother with the cheap lycra valve ones, they don't protect others. And nor does hanging your nose out - all I can think of when I see people doing that is the meme of wearing pants with your willie hanging over the top!

AnnieCartwright · 29/07/2020 21:31

I forgot the three months wearing full ppe including the rather fetching boiler suit when we were redeployed to work in icu looking after ventilated COVID patients. Not something I wish to repeat.
