Hermes pretending to have attempted delivery?

KatyChe · 25/07/2020 11:11

Just that really. In all morning. Just had an email from Hermes saying that they attempted delivery at 09:59. Doorbell didn’t ring, we were in the front room so probably would have noticed someone walk up the drive.

Why would they lie and say they attempted delivery when they didn’t?

Maybe if they have too many parcels to deliver, feeling the pressure, stuck in traffic or delayed? Trying to stay on track to meet targets.

utterlynutty · 25/07/2020 11:22

Probably because the delivery driver couldn't be bothered.
We had an e mail from Hermes to say they'd tried to deliver a package but nobody was in and they didn't want to leave the package unattended outside.
Utter lies.We were in at the time they allegedly tried to deliver and checked the CCTV which showed no one had been anywhere near our front door. When the package was eventually delivered it was just pushed through the letterbox.

KatyChe · 25/07/2020 11:22

But why not say delivery delayed until Monday, rather than lie and say delivery attempted?

OP posts:
Littlegoth · 25/07/2020 11:23

Because the sender can claim money back if it’s not delivered in the agreed time.

Better to blame the recipient

AvoidingRealHumans · 25/07/2020 11:23

I think they do this when for whatever reason, they can't deliver the parcel today. Has happened to me a few times.
They should just say apologies for the delay, it won't be with you today.
So annoying

KatyChe · 25/07/2020 11:25

Good job I’ve got cctv then. I can forward it on to the vendor and prove Hermes are lying. The cctv camera is in a really obvious place too - the driver couldn’t have missed it, if he/she had actually been to the house.

I suspect their whole system is set up so that drivers who fail to deliver are heavily penalised/ sanctioned, whereas those that apparently “can’t” are not.

Complain to the company from whom you are purchasing. Ask them to reconsider using delivery companies that treat their employees badly and are dishonest with their customers.

FrancesFlute · 25/07/2020 11:27

That's annoying. Also odd as most places are contactless delivery atm so don't need to physically hand it to someone.

I had this with Hermes a few years ago. Had an email to say it'd been delivered but couldn't find it. It really stressed me out as I was worried he'd left it and someone had nicked it. He turned up the next day and delivered it and was quite rude to me when I asked why he'd claimed he'd delivered it when he hadn't.

I don't know how it works but I imagine they have targets?

Can you feed back? I had a Hermes delivery this week and got a photo of it sticking out my letterbox as proof it'd been delivered. Or maybe see if they try again?

superram · 25/07/2020 11:29

They ‘delivered’ to me this morning. Didn’t knock on door despite 3 cars on the drive and just chucked it over the fence. TNT were also shit yesterday when they failed to knock to deliver my passport......

Mrsfrumble · 25/07/2020 11:31

DPD did this to me a few weeks ago, in the midst of lockdown. You’d think they’d be forced to come up with a better lie when everyone is stuck at home waiting for their parcels!

I sent them a facetious email saying I was worried about their delivery driver, who may have become lost or was perhaps having some sort of delusional episode where they believed themselves to have rung doorbells they’d actually been nowhere near. Which they of course ignored, but it was cathartic to write.

KatyChe · 25/07/2020 11:31

They are allegedly going to try again on Monday.

Quite an interesting thread on this on MSM. Apparently the drivers get paid for each delivery, penalised for not attempting delivery but no penalty if the recipient isn’t in. So they will plan their routes so it is most profitable for them, which means claiming that the recipient isn’t available for parcels that are due to be delivered but aren’t on a route that makes a profit for them.

It's so weird.

I was expecting a Hermes parcel a couple of weeks ago. Got a message to say it had been delivered, and the tracker even showed a photograph of our front door, as 'proof' of delivery. We'd been in all morning, and I could see the front door from where I was sitting - nobody had been up the path or knocked on the door. They ignored all my attempts to contact them, and then it was delivered the next day.

Elouera · 25/07/2020 11:38

I get this ALL the time from 'Herpes' as we call them and I now refuse to buy products if I know the company use them to deliver. We live on a busy high street with limited parking. I assume that if they are too busy to find a park, or running late, they just drive off and say they attempted delivery. One driver admitted he'd got the street wrong, and left a card at the wrong house, but whether that is true, I have no idea!

They say that a card has been left, but it NEVER is, and the camera proves they were never near our door at all. Even more annoying when I've taken the day off to accept the delivery, and then they don't give info as to when it will be delivered Angry

InkieNecro · 25/07/2020 11:43

Don't say that, I have a parcel being delivered by them this afternoon. At least it isn't Yodel, they're worse where I am.

My friend in Bristol says Hermes are really good but I'm convinced she's fibbing.

Hermes pretending to have attempted delivery?
KatyChe · 25/07/2020 11:44

I had an entertaining one a few years ago. Hermes said they had left my parcel in my shed and had a photo to prove it. Problem was, I don’t have a shed. They had left it in someone else’s shed and taken a photo of the random shed’s door, as proof of delivery. Hermes expected me to go and knock on every door on my road and ask the inhabitants to check their shed for my parcel.

The order was from Mango. I eventually got a replacement parcel from Mango. God knows where the original parcel ended up, it could well still be in someone’s shed.

OP. Have a read of this dedicated Hermes fail site.

KatyChe yes, the way that Hermes - and other delivery firms - pay their drivers create this situation.

It's a pita, but they will eventually deliver.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 25/07/2020 11:57

We've not had any issue with Hermes either here or at our old house 300 miles away.

hummusandpitta · 25/07/2020 12:16

I think it totally depends on the delivery driver. My local Hermes guy is reliable and polite and always makes me wonder why Hermes have a bad reputation!

mencken · 25/07/2020 12:55

as somebody explained upthread, it is a consequence of how drivers are paid. The wages are pitiful but they can get away with it.

I try very hard only to buy from places that send via Royal Mail.

LangClegsInSpace · 25/07/2020 12:58

They've just done this to me for the second time in two weeks.

Mustbetimeforachange · 25/07/2020 12:59

We've had this do many times. The ring doorbell proves they are liars but you never get any response when you email & tell them.

AldiAisleofCrap · 25/07/2020 13:02

@KatyChe have a watch of “Sorry we missed you” before you starting forwarding cctv!

MrDarcysMa · 25/07/2020 13:06

Because they can't get through all of the deliveries in the allotted time but if the driver admits they weren't fast enough, they are to blame and will get in trouble.
Hermes is a disgusting company who treat their drivers very badly.

longtompot · 25/07/2020 13:10

I had that with DHL earlier this week. I was sat in the living room which faces the road. The driver was parked around the corner, though I didn't realise it was his van at this point. I then saw a man in the road with a red top on looking at the houses. He didn't walk to the front door, as I would have heard him on the gravel, and the dog would have heard him too.
Next thing I know my dh comes rushing in from his garden office saying they made a failed attempt to deliver. The driver had taken a photo of our front door but made no attempt to deliver! What was even the point of taking the photo. It doesn't show we we or weren't in. I guess to prove he was in the road, but still. Why drive there and not walk to the door!
