Virgin Media Broadband

naemates · 24/07/2020 23:05

Our broadband is pretty slow so looking to upgrade but it seems we don't have fibre in the area so the speeds are about as good as it gets. Virgin Media on the other hand are claiming their speeds are 5x what we're getting with a BT line, but their reviews are pretty dire.

Does anyone have Virgin Media broadband and is it okay? I don't want to tie us into an 18 month contract with a slow line if there's a quicker one available.

Utter rubbish. I say this on day two of zero internet connection and zero interest from customer service (called twice, on hold for half an hour both times only to be cut off). Avoid if you can. Even when it’s not down completely it can be intermittent. Not ideal when so many are currently working from home.

Yorkshiremummyof1 · 24/07/2020 23:08

I’m leaving Virgin, since I got it a year ago I experience daily blips and it drops out for 5 mins. I don’t know if it’s the line or the router

Abitupthehill · 24/07/2020 23:10

Can I ask what was involved in the fitting please? I’ve just been told it’s being installed tomorrow morning and having a freak out about people I. The house installing it from a Corona pov

nancy75 · 24/07/2020 23:10

When I called for the millionth time to complain about how bad my wifi was the helpful man at virgin said the problem was my house had furniture. And walls.
We are with sky now, it’s slightly better but only slightly

naemates · 24/07/2020 23:11

Oh dear, I think I'd rather have it slow and reliable (like me!). It would be easier as well just to renew with my current provider

i have it, had it for years and rarely had a problem with it

chipsandpeas · 24/07/2020 23:12

i should add theres been the odd outage but not for very long, its been very fast and coped with working from home with all other devices on it as well

naemates · 24/07/2020 23:13

@nancy75 what a coincidence, I too have walls and furniture! Several of each in fact!

I think you are all backing up my gut feelings here, thank you Smile

Be careful with Virgin as it will mean you leaving the Openreach system used by around 90% of Broadband suppliers. It can
work out very expensive to move back as we discovered years ago.😕

It really depends upon your area! We have just moved back to SSE fibre - terrific in our area - from P!usnet. We were with SSE 2 years ago and switched to P!usnet because of price. Found Plusnet ok but clunky! SSE is much smoother, slicker and faster!I
It all depends upon which is best for your particular area.

I know, crazy us - fancy having walls in your house!

I'm staying at my mum's, she has virgin broadband, ds has his Xbox on, I've got a tablet, phone & Now TV stick & the broadband is constantly dropping out. At home we have Plusnet, live in a flat with very thick walls but our broadband never drops out.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 24/07/2020 23:38

I’ve had almost non problems for nearly 10 years but my biggest issue is the price hikes. My bill nearly doubled last year so I’ll be off to Vodafone at some point (am WFH at the moment and can’t risk an issue).

Virgin always used to be happy to negotiate but now they clearly have enough customers that they don’t give a toss if they lose you.

BarbedBloom · 25/07/2020 00:24

Virgin is absolutely dire and we are cancelling. Our broadband drops daily, at least once, sometimes for hours. Over the last year we have had whole weeks without broadband several times. Their call center staff are often rude and they hang up on you a fair amount.

Their prices keep rising and yet, their service gets worse. Read their FB reviews on their page.

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 00:26

I'm with Virgin. I am not happy with their price hikes. Any strong recommendations with an easy Customer Service. BT is dreadful

EBearhug · 25/07/2020 00:27

I've been with them years and very few problems - but your experience could be different. You need to find some neighbours on Virgin to see what it's like locally.

EBearhug · 25/07/2020 00:28

As a general rule, all telecoms companies seem to be crap at customer service.

BackforGood · 25/07/2020 00:43

I was going to suggest the same as EBearhug - ask people who live locally to you as it must be different in different areas.

We have been with Virgin since they took over from Telewest, and, although I complain regularly at the cost and the fact the price keeps going up, I stay with them as the broadband does always work. I work from home a lot and need it, and dh and 3 teens / adult dc are all always on devices in the evenings as well as me. It offers a lot more broadband width than those I compare with. The call centres are dire, but on the few occasions we've had engineers out, they have always been excellent.

MajesticWhine · 25/07/2020 11:17

We just changed to virgin media. It's supposed to be much faster. I will report back when I've tested it. Apparently we will need boosters though for the WiFi signal, because of the size of house.

mrsrhodgilbert · 25/07/2020 11:24

We’ve had virgin for many years and are pretty happy with it. It rarely falls over, is coping with dh and dd working from home and customer service has been ok. We’ve renegotiated the price most years. It doesn’t reach every corner of the house though, we have the odd dead spot but work around that

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 25/07/2020 11:29

My Virgin broadband was great. The customer service was beyond shit tho, which is why I left. Futility warehouse was rubbish broadband, and Post Office isn't proving much better so far, for info. Warehouse was good customer service until I left, having given them options that would resolve the issue and keep my custom, then it suddenly deteriorated, and I was spammed by phone and letter. They are currently making it impossible to pay a final bill, whilst threatening me with charges for not paying it. This is why I only change providers when necessary.

LesLavandes · 25/07/2020 11:53

Dors anybody have Sky broadband? Any good?

TraceyAnne21 · 25/07/2020 12:01

I have Virgin at the moment, and the broadband has been excellent. I used to be with Sky and the speed was truly awful. I would always choose Virgin Fibre broadband over Sky now. I have a speed test app and Sky was always poor, Virgin is fast and has never dropped out. Customer service with virgin is better too. Had one of the tv boxes go U/S, phoned them and they sent a new box out the next day along with packaging to send the old box back (which they then collected on a day convenient to me). Maybe I've been lucky but I would always recommend Virgin.

SprogletsMum · 25/07/2020 12:04

We're with virgin as they were the only ones that could offer us more than 2mb broadband. Its ok, obviously much faster, but it does drop out occasionally and doesn't reach very far at all.

AuditAngel · 25/07/2020 12:13

We’re with Virgin, speed is amazing, but since lockdown I think a lot of people have moved to them and the reliability has plummeted. We’ve had a new splitter fitted and been provided with a booster set, which has helped.

Some days I can’t connect to Teams meetings, even if i kick all the kids off. Looking forward to people going back to the office so my speed improves

SapatSea · 25/07/2020 12:17

I'm moving to an area without Virgin and I'm really sad and worried about having a much slower BB. I have 4 late teen and adult kids and myself and DP both work from home, we have Virgin fibre 100 and its great. If you get a drop out in service just phone 150 and if the area is down or intermittent an automated message tells you and gives an estimated time of when things will be back online.
