What films have left a bad taste in your mouth?

Spoilers, sorry! I just put a film on to procrastinate doing the housework and now im regretting it! It was called Exhibit A, on amazon prime. It was one of those found footage films so I assumed it would be a bit of paranormal silliness, but not at all. Has anyone else seen it? I just found it really really unpleasant and I think anyone who's been through domestic abuse would really struggle to watch it. Particularly horrible when you think of news stories where abusive men have just annihilated their whole family.
What other films just leave you with an unpleasant feeling afterwards? Another for me was one called Megan is Missing. It was about a girl who meets up with a guy online and goes missing. And her friend tries to track her down. It was quite good in a creepy way until the last half hour where theres a really brutal close up rape and bits of torture. Another one I went away from wishing I hadnt bothered!

War horse
Haven't seen the film, but saw it at the theatre and was in bits as soon as Joey came on at the start as a foal Grin

Wokus, I'm meant to be watching Midsommar soon. My impression is that it's somewhat akin to The Wicker Man (the original) and more about atmosphere and mystery than horror per se. Is it nastier than that?

IhateBoswell · 24/07/2020 17:10

I enjoyed Midsommar, couple of “eek” scenes though.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 24/07/2020 17:13

@IHeartSusanDey

Me, Myself and Irene. Stars off like a comedy but then Jim Carrey's character scalps someone. I wasn't expecting it and it made me feel sick.

Are you getting it mixed up with Liar, Liar where Carrey's character pulls a toupee of a man's head and slams it on the wall?🤔

That's one hell of a false memory!

I Googled "Jim Carrey scalping" and absolutely nothing came up. The closest I could get was when he was "roasting" his colleagues in Liar Liar. Me Myself and Irene is offensive for misrepresenting and demonising mental health issues, however, so it still deserves to be on the shit list.

I think Big gets away with that plot as she didn't know he was a young child. He looked and sounded like an adult, even if he was immature.
When she knew at the end, she acted differently with him.

pinkmagic1 · 24/07/2020 17:16

The Human Centipede is the only film that has truly disturbed me. I wish I could unsee it.

cariadlet · 24/07/2020 17:16

In Big, she doesn't know that he is a child but the audience does and we're supposed to think it's ok. I think that's what makes me uncomfortable.

MotherOfGreyhound · 24/07/2020 17:17

@cariadlet I'll have to check out that podcast. I'm glad to learn that Passengers was held up as an example of how not to make a film!
I felt like I'd wasted the best part of two hours watching MRA/ rape culture propaganda.

Another film that disturbed me, that I don't think has been mentioned yet, was American Psycho. I'd read the book, so wasn't surprised by the amount or type of violence in it, but I found the director's decision to play it for laughs really inappropriate.

daisychain1620 · 24/07/2020 17:32

With every Google result I am more and more afraid🙁 but I just can't help myself. Need to put on some Disney or a cheery musicalGrin

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 24/07/2020 17:44

Not only that with mrs doubtfire, he's so desperate to control his ex wife that he disguises himself, sneaks into her home, and does his utmost to ruin her new relationship. All she did was try and raise her family. He's the useless sack of shite who wouldn't step up and parent, and once she finally kicks him out he basically stalks her. I have no idea why its so popular.

CarrieMoonbeams · 24/07/2020 17:54

As well as checking the doesthedogdie website, I also read the Parents Guide part of imdb before I watch a film! I'm a sensitive soul, and awful scenes can play on my mind for ages.

I'm obviously not the target audience for 'normal' horror films (I get scared on anything more than the Tea Cup and Saucer ride at a funfair) but I'd still rather not be surprised by a scene that's going to be upsetting in any film I'm watching.

I've done a few eeeeeks just Googling some of the films mentioned on here!

dayswithaY · 24/07/2020 19:25

Reading the book "Sleepers" was enough to put me off watching the film. I am fascinated by the thought that it was all made up though - that's bold.

Dreams of a Life stayed with me for a very long time, heartbreaking. I thought it was so clever how the producers advertised for people who knew Joyce to come forward and speak. I think they must have just let them talk and talk with the camera running as some people revealed themselves to have not been so kind to her. Made me wonder if anyone would check up on me if I went silent. Another documentary called "Deliver Us From Evil" about a dangerous paedophile priest, who is free and living in Ireland somewhere. Horrific, his victims were traumatised, there was no justice, just unspeakable.

A film with Seth Macfarlane and Charlize Theron where she's some big shot in the White House and he's a loveable chump (as always) they get together and make reference to him strangling her during sex, at her invitation. Not funny.

Deliverance - that scene haunted me forever. The Babadook was disturbing too and Wolf Creek - never, ever again.

FUBARFlossie · 24/07/2020 19:29

Whiplash is a fantastic film.

The80sweregreat · 24/07/2020 19:53

Whiplash stayed with me for ages.
The music coach was a monster.

totalitarian · 24/07/2020 19:56

I agree with Big. She's an adult sleeping with a ten year old.

LoseLooseLucy · 24/07/2020 20:01

He's actually 13 in Big. Still wrong, obviously.

MarshaBradyo · 24/07/2020 20:03

Some weird movie where humankind is on a long train circling the earth and the back end is very poor, no food. They move through and each section gets richer. But I loathed parts to do with children.

The80sweregreat · 24/07/2020 20:03

Big is all kinds of wrong!

WilheminaVenable · 24/07/2020 20:08

Reading this I have tons!
Midsommar was horrible in so many ways
The Strangers
All of 13 reasons why
London to Brighton about a prostitute and a 12 year old girl on the run

Used to love 50 first dates but I can’t watch it anymore, tried last year and stopped half way through, he fancies her so does everything he can to win her even though she only remembers up to one day and will never remember him.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 24/07/2020 20:16

MarshaBradyo that sounds like Snowpiercer. I haven't seen the film, but did watch a couple of episodes of the Netflix series. It didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth, but it was boring as hell. I couldn't understand how they took such an intriguing (if ridiculous) premise and made it so utterly ponderous.

BillywilliamV · 24/07/2020 20:18

I love "Steel Magnolias" but when I watched it a few days ago I was really aware of how few black faces there are. Just the maids at he wedding really!

mathanxiety · 24/07/2020 20:26

Mrs Doubtfire - I hated it. Incompetent man child as hero and the mother portrayed as weak and spineless.

Goodfellas - the violence, the misogyny. I watched 10 minutes of it. That was more than enough.

shartsi · 24/07/2020 20:34

Precious was uncomfortable to watch. The bit where the mother sexually abuses Precious.

MarshaBradyo · 24/07/2020 20:51

Eoin yes that’s it just googled name. I didn’t know there was a series too.

JeansNTees · 24/07/2020 21:35

MarshaBradyo that sounds like the same idea as The Platform, which was also very disturbing with food starting from the top level of a prison type place and descending to each level for a few minutes, and no one from a certain level down got any. Weird film, not a fan.

DisobedientHamster · 24/07/2020 21:38

Betty Blue
