What films have left a bad taste in your mouth?

Spoilers, sorry! I just put a film on to procrastinate doing the housework and now im regretting it! It was called Exhibit A, on amazon prime. It was one of those found footage films so I assumed it would be a bit of paranormal silliness, but not at all. Has anyone else seen it? I just found it really really unpleasant and I think anyone who's been through domestic abuse would really struggle to watch it. Particularly horrible when you think of news stories where abusive men have just annihilated their whole family.
What other films just leave you with an unpleasant feeling afterwards? Another for me was one called Megan is Missing. It was about a girl who meets up with a guy online and goes missing. And her friend tries to track her down. It was quite good in a creepy way until the last half hour where theres a really brutal close up rape and bits of torture. Another one I went away from wishing I hadnt bothered!

Show dogs- of all things. Kids movie and the forced ball fondling if the dog- telling him it's necessary and to go to your happy place...always left a bad taste and worse than any movie that was supposed to.

Hmm, have I only seen a cut version of the Breakfast Club? I remember Bender being vile to Molly Ringwald but I don't remember an assault?

War horse

Ok so it didn’t leave a bad taste in my mouth but it did take me about 6 months to watch it all. I had to keep stopping because it was upsetting me too much.

The lord of the flies

For some reason we watched this in year 8 RE. Still disturbs me to this day.

Miljea Lots of us strongly disliked the violence/gratuitous sex in Game of Thrones and have said so on MN threads: others think that it was fine / reflecting the times blah blah. ‘MNetters’ do not have homogenous views!

ScribblyGum · 24/07/2020 07:26

@GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy would scene be considered sexual assault?

Ginger1982 · 24/07/2020 07:33

I liked Wolf Creek as most of the film up to the end was the suspense and threat of violence. Wolf Creek 2 on the other hand was just vile from the opening scene to the end.

Last House on The Left- horrible rape scene. I agree that using sexual violence against women is lazy filmmaking.

Yabusux · 24/07/2020 07:34

You've Got Mail. A charming romcon about, er, stalking someone?

cariadlet · 24/07/2020 07:35

@MotherofGreyhound I was listening to Robbie Collins on the Kermode and Mayo film podcast a couple of days ago. He was talking about films where the filmmakers have absolutely no idea what kind of film they are making and cited Passengers as a perfect example. Man wakes up due to malfunctioning machinery so wakes up woman to keep him company. By doing so he not only condemns her to death, but forces her to spend the rest of her life in isolation with the man who has done this to her. But they think they're making a romantic film.

SushiGo · 24/07/2020 07:40

The History Boys.

Wasn't bothered the first time I watched it years ago. Watched recently and just genuinely baffled by the implications that gay male teachers are great at teaching because they secretly want to 'touch the boys' which comes up more than once.

Also despite seeming to celebrate the idea of working class kids succeeding academically it's still very clear that apparently some kids aren't worth bothering with...

Bit shit all around! Some great performances though.

cravingthelook · 24/07/2020 07:40

@RhianFuckingMorris I forgot about Wish you were here. I used to love this as a teen/young woman as I thought she seemed so tough. I suspect if I watch it again I'd be horrified.

LunaNorth · 24/07/2020 07:45

Trainspotting.

The scene with the soiled bedsheets at the breakfast table is revolting. The scene where Robert Carlyle’s character batters somebody in a pub is just hideously upsetting. And don’t get me started on the baby...or the nice lad that ends up in such a state.

It’s all just hideously sad and gross and I can’t understand why anyone would watch it for entertainment.

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 24/07/2020 08:03

@ScribblyGum Oof, had completely forgotten about that. Eurgh!

@bendmeoverbackwards I thought Jo jo rabbit was brilliant, I saw it after going to Amsterdam and learning a bit more about Jewish / Germany divides through Nazi reign. The actors were fantastic, especially the little boy who plays Jojo. I would definitely recommend.

Gone girl was another one for me that was a bit warped.

HM1984 · 24/07/2020 08:36

Ooooh one more...the wolf of Wall Street. It was basically a porno Confused. They didn't need the group bangs and margot Robbie pleasing herself every 5 mins.

I read Cynthia Payne's book years ago then ' wish you were here' came out in 87.
It's true she was groomed at a young age but at a time when it would have been ' all her fault' of course! .. as an adult she had a lot of dirt on people working as a high class ' madam' : fascinating lady.
Whiplash was horrible and an uncomfortable watch.
I don't watch horror films usually , but Rosemarys baby is also very dark and unsettling.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/07/2020 08:57

The Kingsman, but not for the reasons listed by pp.

The actual premise of the plot was that anyone near a mobile phone when the baddy pushed the trigger would go psychotic and start axe murdering anyone standing beside them.

The main character is able to phone his single mother and get her to lock his toddler sister in the bathroom before it happens. Even then the child actor seems genuinely terrified by “mummy” knifing through the door trying to kill her.

But what about all the babies and toddlers whose mothers didn’t the warning call? All over the world? I can’t even spell it out, it’s too horrific.

I watched this on my first child free evening since having dd1 when she was approx 2.5 years old. I had to ditch our much looked forward to night out and run home to cuddle her. It still fucks me up to this day when i remember it.

icebearforpresident · 24/07/2020 08:58

That’s the scene @ScribblyGum.

Molly Ringwald has written a great article about The Breakfast Club and how it holds up in the age of Me Too. For a long time it was one of my favourite movies and while there’s no denying that it’s hilarious in some bits (mostly involving the principal) as a feminist in my 30’s it get more and more difficult to watch every time I see it.

Mrsjayy · 24/07/2020 08:58

I remember being allowed to watch Rosemary's baby I must have been about 12 Hmm

daisychain1620 · 24/07/2020 09:59

Boxing Helena sounds so horrific but I googled it and it seems to have an ending that maybe isn't do bad???
I am getting my eyes opened with this thread! I haven't heard of a lot if these, I've googled lots but now I am scarred for life lol. I'm more of a comedy girl!

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 24/07/2020 10:01

Knocked up is awful. The moral of the story is it's all the womans fault for not being careful to not get knocked up. Now she's stuck with a huge man child and she deserves it. She's just a total nag trying to ruin his life.

I thought i tonya was pretty thought provoking re the domestic violence. I don't think it was comedic. I thought it portrayed the everyday nature of domestic violence. You kind of get used to it and it's really hard to watch a woman accept this treatment from this waste of space of a man. That film did stay with me. Tonya really didn't have much going for her and then he fucked up her life.

The favourite stayed with me for Olivia colmans portayal of a woman suffering with depression. I live with depression and i felt like she just got it completely. It was like someone holding a mirror up to me. Amazing acting. My sister thought her performance was boring! The rest of the film was bloody weird.

Mrsjayy · 24/07/2020 10:13

Anything that Seth what's his face is involved with is awful he looks like a middle aged stoner who thinks boobie jokes are . hilarious

thecatsthecats · 24/07/2020 10:14

Nocturnal Animals managed to be mildly disturbing but also utterly tedious.

Amy Adams spent most of the film staring into space in between the book bits. Literally just looking mournful and contemplative in bed or in the bath or sitting at a table.

The revenge novel bit was really predictable.

It was just arthousey blah dressed up as soooooo meaningful, when I couldn't give a shiny shit about any of the characters' feelings.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 24/07/2020 10:21

The kerb scene in American History X

God yes. I hadn't thought about that in years and then I read this thread again and now I feel that same cold, nauseous horror I did when I first watched the film. Which I suppose means they did a good job with it, that scene is supposed to make you feel dreadful, right?
