Do you dump the trolley or put it back?

My bro has come up with a theory that as there is no law to put your supermarket trolley back where it belongs after use... if you do put it back you are a genuinely nice person. And if you don’t and just leave it anywhere, then you’re a dick.

I agree!

The only times I haven't taken my trolley back have been when I have a baby kicking off and needing feeding/a nap. The trolley bays are far from the p&c spaces and so I left the trolley on the other side of the bollard next to the space, hoping that it would make life marginally easier for the next parent.

Apart from that, I'd feel like a dick to leave it lying around simply because I cba to take it back.

There's a special place in hell for those that leave it at the back of a parking bay. You swing round thinking you've got the last space then have to get out and move the sodding thing before you can fully park.

The80sweregreat · 23/07/2020 08:32

Of course there are times when people have to leave them elsewhere and anyone with little children that can't be easily left in the car for a minute , or a disability or an emergency crops up will mean the trolley isn't put back in the correct place , but the majority of the time most people should just return them , even if it means a bit of a trek back to the trolley park.
Random ones left around on a windy day could cause accidents too. (I know it can be a pain if it is a long way, but it's all part of the supermarket ' experience' ! 😀)

DibDibDibduh · 23/07/2020 08:34

Why don't all the people saying they can't put their trolley back because of X Y and Z ask for assistance in the shop to say they won't be able to put it back
It's not rocket science

lifeafter50 · 23/07/2020 08:41

I disagree. If you leave a trolley elsewhere it may be more convenient for another person, and also it means that the supermarket has to employ a person to collect them. That gives employment to a low/skilled person who gets an income and pride rather than being unemployed.
Same reason I don't use automatic checkouts.

KevinsCarter · 23/07/2020 08:44

I do take them back as a rule. However, I had to laugh last time I saw someone do it last week. Lady and her early teen, she'd already pushed in front of me in the central queue for the checkout so I was already watching to see whether she wheeled it back from the far end of the carpark.

No she didn't. She tried to wedge it next to some bollards, but it is hilly and windy where I live, so as I was coming back from returning mine I saw her trolley creeping along toward her reversing car. I pretended not to notice so didn't run over to divert it.

She jumped out, inspected the damage, shoved the trolley aside and drove off. I felt a bit cruel, but she may feel less entitled next time.

Tell you what I’m finding interesting from this thread: the plural form of ‘trolley’. Is it ‘trollies’ or ‘trolleys’? I always thought it was ‘trolleys’ but I’m not sure now!

I always put my trolley back and I am another trolley bay reshuffler!

FedUp196 · 23/07/2020 08:49

And now I’ve looked at the word ‘trolley’ so many times it looks weird!

BrutusMcDogface · 23/07/2020 09:03

It’s “trolleys” Grin

BrutusMcDogface · 23/07/2020 09:03

By the way, I always put mine back, too! I try to park somewhere where it’ll be easy to do so!

ThatLibraryMiss · 23/07/2020 09:04

Same if you knock things off shelves and onto the floor, yes? You're just doing it so the shop workers have job security, and it makes them feel soooo good about themselves to pick up after your lazy ass, right?

Put the trolley back. Don't be a dick.

evilharpy · 23/07/2020 09:13

FedUp196 That's how I feel about the word "vacuum". I can't cope with it, it just looks wrong.

BlahBlipBloopBlop · 23/07/2020 09:18

.

Do you dump the trolley or put it back?
Yellredder · 23/07/2020 09:38

We always put it back. I shared a house with three other women and we had a trolley in the garage. We'd walk to the supermarket with it and walk back home with it full!

mencken · 23/07/2020 10:30

I remember making an easy fiver from a run round an Asda car park, putting back a few trollies and collecting the abandoned coins.

I shop in Aldi so it is a no brainer to put the trolley back and retrieve the token or coin. If I see someone struggling (walking trouble/small kids) I'll offer to take their trolley back and bring their token or coin back to them. It isn't hard.

caringcarer · 23/07/2020 10:36

People who do not return are just lazy. All but a small number return.

Dhalandchips · 23/07/2020 10:43

@LadyPenelope68 did you miss the bit about the amputation? GrinWink

@Somanysocks

To all those who don't put them back because they're disabled, knackered or have small children, I'm willing to bet you would if it was £10 for a trolley rather than a pound coin. You would miraculously make an extra effort.
I don’t pay for a trolley in Tesco. They’re free.

In Lidl they’re £1 and the trolley bay is right beside the disabled spaces. So I return there because I physically can.

Tesco have closed the trolley bays next to the disabled spaces.

I have asked for help before but haven’t during Covid for social distancing reasons. (I do wear a mask, before I’m asked that)

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 23/07/2020 10:58

The people who leave their trolleys free to roam in the car park are the same people who leave their tray and rubbish on the table in McDonald's.

waterjungle · 23/07/2020 11:04

Depends - if I have both DS under 3's in the car and am parked in a parent and child place I will leave it next the the car parking space. I personally hate having to go and get a trolley from the other side of the car park and youngest DS seems to think I have gone forever and is always in years when I get back however quick I am. The way I see it I am doing the next parent a favour.
If I am on my own I put it back...... so I maybe a dick I may not!

Alloverthegrapevine · 23/07/2020 11:07

I put it back because I'd be embarrassed to be seen leaving it where it might cause damage to others' cars. Not sure that makes me a good person, really

FourPlasticRings · 23/07/2020 11:10

I return it. Always have, even when it was raining and I had a baby in tow.

Dhalandchips · 23/07/2020 11:14

@Somanysocks do you think that disabled people deliberately take the piss? Or are lazy? Or is it possible that we're actually grateful that there are people employed to put trolleys back? If the trolley took a tenner, I just wouldn't bother going to the big supermarket. I'd stay home and get deliveries. But as it is, they don't take anything where I am, and so I leave the trolley near to the disabled parking. I'm also grateful that people do this so I don't have waste precious energy going to the trolley park to collect one before I even get in the shop. Or would you rather disabled people (who can miraculously shift their lazy arses for a tenner) stay home and fester?

This. I’d get deliveries or have to take one of my kids with me.
