Are you buying school uniform?

We're in Scotland so our schools go back in 3 weeks.

I'm normally organised for their return but I'm hesitant to buy DC's anything until we have a confirmed return schedule.

I realise it's planned to be full time but I'm not convinced and I don't know anyone who is!

Yes, I am. They will be back in at least some form.

tiredanddangerous · 22/07/2020 14:58

Yes, reluctantly! Both dc need new everything and are expected back in full uniform. I'll be somewhat pissed off if they end up back out of school for half the year again!

LadyCatStark · 22/07/2020 15:03

Yep I’ve bought all DS’s for high school in September.

England here but yes all bought. We have already had quite detailed plans for Sept (normal state school) slightly shorter days to allow staggered start and finishes but otherwise normal days full time school so far

Christmashope19 · 22/07/2020 15:15

I’m in Scotland and I haven’t bought anything yet
I will do so the week before they go back as like you I’m not 100% sure what the school week will look like
Will probably only buy a couple of sets

SarahTancredi · 22/07/2020 15:32

Unfortunately had too as my dds high school has an online supplier so if I want any hope of their limited supplies they already emailed to say they have turning up in time I had to order by a mid July deadline.

Not only does it take weeks at peak times like this I've no idea if they will have what I've ordered, if I will even get it in time and as far as trying on and send back and getting a refund intime to re order theres probably no chance so I've had to buy a couple of things in 2 sizes. I will also have to pay to return.

Takes piss as we only got the return date this week and of course we could lock down again and not go back msabing I'm.140 quid out of pocket for no reason.

labyrinthloafer · 22/07/2020 15:34

Yes have bought uniform but haven't broached shoes yet, was planning to roll up their toes.

Had to buy more than usual so I can wash the lurgy off, annoying.

I am not even certain mine are going to return when it opens!

Calibrachoa · 22/07/2020 15:36

Yes as we have been told they are to be in full uniform and returning in September so have to plan for that. Easy for me to say though as dd only needed new skirts which last at least a couple of years anyway at her age. (13.) Her blazer is knackered so she is wearing dd1's old one (Dd1 won't need one as going to sixth form)

cuntryclub · 22/07/2020 15:37

Whether they go back fully or part time they still need uniform. I bought mine in June as always when M&S had 20% off.

Typically today they have 25% off

formerbabe · 22/07/2020 15:37

I'm in England...I bought some new school shirts and skirts yesterday.

Bit hard to justify 33 quid on a blazer for 2 days a week maybe...rip off

labyrinthloafer · 22/07/2020 16:00

I was really really hoping for no uniform to be the new normal, but thwarted again

formerbabe · 22/07/2020 16:01

I was hoping no uniform too or at least no blazers/ties.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 22/07/2020 16:04

I haven't bought any new uniform. DDs are returning in what they already have at least to start with and we will review it as and when needed.

Helgathehairy · 22/07/2020 16:06

I bought DDs and then there was an announcement that the kids can just wear their tracksuit everyday. I’ll still have DD wear the uniform, she’ll have grown out of it by next year.

tigger1001 · 22/07/2020 16:08

I've just ordered some online today. Usually get 5 shirts each but have just ordered 2 each for the moment. Will order more once the announcement is made how they are going back and exactly what uniform is expected to be worn.

I'm moving to your catchment, track suits Smile

Ok, but if they need to wear one then it doesn't matter if you can justify it or not; they need to wear one. Consider it a rip off but if they are expected in uniform then you need to put them in it.

Our primary has said polo shirts and no blazer. High school have said yes to blazer. This was given in the blended learning information prior to the turn around being made re going back full time.

SarahTancredi · 22/07/2020 16:15

For months kids have been learning and studying at home wearing whatever they like. One would have hoped that the schools would have taken more of how unimportant uniform actually is and stop ripping off their pupils when u can get a blazer for 11 pound on sainsburys . Yet they are still insisting on the logo ones. Y

labyrinthloafer · 22/07/2020 16:21

I agree @SarahTancredi - uniform rip.off is annoying.

An advantage I see for me though is our school send you home if not in uniform, and I'm not certain I want mine to go in, so I might send them in the wrong jumper, to save me getting a fine Grin

I'm trying to buy ds trousers just now. He has gone from plus fit to skinny fit so nothing he has fits him now. Have bought new shirts for dd and ds. Dd will be fine with existing skirts. They were told no blazers or ties but they have existing ones they can use if that advice changes. I think existing shoes will do too

turquoise50 · 22/07/2020 16:29

Initially only bought a few shirts and trousers when it looked like they'd only be going in a couple of days a week.

Then got an email saying uniform suppliers were operating on appointment only basis for fittings (DS going up to HS so needs new everything) and cut-off date was 14th August (England). So went there last week and got blazer, tie, and logo items for PE. Also went to sports shop and got all the bits and bobs he needed from there off the uniform list.

That same night, a letter comes through from the school saying yes they'll need full uniform for Sept, but most of the PE kit not required - including football boots which we'd bought - as no contact sports for now. So that was a bit annoying but he's wearing his football boots to play outside as I type.

Subsequently I've realised that I'll probably need to get more shirts and trousers after all, as it'll probably be advisable for him to take off his uniform the minute he gets home and bung it in the washer every night. If M&S have 25% off I’m going on there right now!

MrsJonesAndMe · 22/07/2020 16:38

Yes, one moving to a new school and a specialist shop, so that's done and dusted. Other one I will do closer to the time - especially the school shoes and trainers for PE.

UsernameNotValid · 22/07/2020 16:43

Looks like I need to up my game!

Youngest is in P3 - potentially going back 2 days a week with a "leisure uniform" (specified by school) of jumper, any t-shirt, joggers/leggings and trainers. They haven't told us whether it's the same for full time.

Eldest is in S3 and have heard bugger all from school so am assuming it's full uniform but no idea how many days etc 🙄

Youngest still has jumpers that fit and eldest has a tie but they both need everything else as it's all outgrown.

I hate uniform!
