Are you buying school uniform?

We're in Scotland so our schools go back in 3 weeks.

I'm normally organised for their return but I'm hesitant to buy DC's anything until we have a confirmed return schedule.

I realise it's planned to be full time but I'm not convinced and I don't know anyone who is!

Last year still fits for Dd, I hate to go buy more if she's only wearing it one or two days a week, or however many days she'll be in.

Bingobongo1 · 22/07/2020 16:51

Yes we've been told full uniform or they'll be sent home. My dn school have been told not to bother with pe kit and buy minimal uniform because they are not sure what they are doing.

WhenDoISleep · 22/07/2020 16:54

One DC in primary - needs everything new as he has outgrown all his uniform this year. Have currently got trousers and PE shorts and am trying to get to the uniform shop in the next few days for the logo'd items.

One DC moving to secondary - starting from scratch and needs everything. Can only purchase from the uniform shop (different shop to the primary school), which is operating on an appointment system only and his school is allocated next week for appts.

I am holding off on purchasing school shoes/trainers etc., but generally get them in week 4 of the holidays (so mid-August as we are in England).

The uniform I get for primary age DC will last a good while, but I am concerned that the older DC will not get full wear out of everything if schools are shut again as he is growing rapidly.

Yes, less than 3 weeks till mine are due back, have been told full time so didn't want to leave it to last minute.
Awaiting Swinney's announcement next Thursday though

TheCanyon · 22/07/2020 16:56

Only bought eldest dds p7 hoodie, only because it had to be ordered last month. I'll wait to see what the govt say at the end of the month.

MrsTidyHouse · 22/07/2020 16:57

In Scotland here. Two children in primary, and no communication since Swinney's announcement so close to the end of term, except a vague "watch this space" type of message on the school app during the final week.

Fortunately, our school insists only on the correct colours, and not logos, so I'm buying from George at Asda. Some items still fit, so I'll buy enough in the next size up for each child to change daily. And no ties.

MrsTidyHouse · 22/07/2020 17:00

I'd forgotten about possible P7 hoodie. Are these normally personalised? Can you buy more than one?

Are you thinking about the leavers hoodies? They get them at the end of P7 usually

SimonJT · 22/07/2020 17:03

Yes, my son needed new uniform in February, obviously he then barely wore it and now it’s too small Angry

weegiemum · 22/07/2020 17:13

Excuse me for this but NO!!!!!!!

My last 2 dc left school this year, ds is off to art school and dd2 gets her uniforms (beauty therapy training) through college! I don't have to do it any more!! (After 14 years!)

MrsTidyHouse · 22/07/2020 17:28

Cuntryclub
Well, that's a relief! I thought they wore them throughout P7. Thanks.

happymummy12345 · 22/07/2020 17:48

My son starts reception in September so I will be buying al uniform, school have confirmed start details and full uniform must be worn, which I am pleased about.

heymammy · 22/07/2020 20:01

Youngest in P3 has new non logo polos from eBay - the brand is Uneek and the exact same as the school logo ones for half the price!

I've also ordered him new trousers, he sized up in Jan/Feb time but they're already too short and barely worn [sigh]. His hoodies still fit and he'll have a hand me down logo jumper from his big sister, which he hates but he needs it for school picture day 😂

My teens don't wear uniform thank god so we don't really do a back to school shop anyway, just top up their clothes throughout the year.

The thing I was wondering about is if primary dc will now be allowed to bring their own pencils etc? Has anyone heard anything? When we got the email about part time schooling it was "bring a water bottle and packed lunch only" so don't know whether to stock up or not.

Triangularbubble · 22/07/2020 20:26

Yes, it’s primary school with a fairly relaxed attitude to uniform and a multipack of polo shirts, multipack of trousers and couple of jumpers is pretty cheaply available in supermarkets. I wanted to buy while full range of styles was available as DC1 is very fussy about trousers. PE kit is any joggers, hoody, shorts and t shirt, which is just clothes they have already anyway. They wear black trainers both in and out of school all year round so that’s easy and I have the next couple of sizes up bought in previous sales already. I already have coats, again bought in the last sale.

No pencils, pencil cases, school bags, book bags etc allowed in September. Just water bottle and lunchbox if having packed lunch plus coat if needed. No PE kit in school, just worn on PE days. Frankly I wish that was the rule permanently!

Tulipsinmyvase · 22/07/2020 20:30

Yes full school uniform Including blazers bought for both kids, they just need outdoor shoes, I always get them nearer the time so they are a good fit for lasting the first term.

I hope they do return with uniforms expected - it’s familiarity and what our kids know. Uniform gives them a sense of belonging

that happened to us too. trousers that were new in Feb. and practically dragging on the ground are now less than halfway below his knees. the new shirts just barely fit. not one white undershirt fits.

to be fair, all the joggers he has been wearing are that short, but I thought he just wasn't digging into his drawer deep enough, just cycling through the clean laundry he stuffed into the front edge. but last week I decided to actually look into the clothing situation. Nothing fits his bottom half, even the shorts are shorter than they were designed to be. If his trainers weren't the sort made of that stretchy fabric, they wouldn't fit. now that I think about it, his school socks probably don't fit either.

I really should get to the shops with him tomorrow I guess.

he keeps standing beside me and just sort of looming like Lurch from the Addams family just because he can.

DelurkingAJ · 22/07/2020 21:04

Yes, Reception DS needed smaller stuff than DS1 started school in (but it’s all ASDA so not too outrageous) and DS1 has grown. I emailed to ask what the plan was as DSs have to wear PE kit all day on PE days which is Monday and Tuesday for DS1 (7 so not sweaty but messy!). Apparently we don’t need to wash clothing every day come September...we shall see.

rhowton · 22/07/2020 21:08

DD starting pre school in September and sadly the second hand shop is closed because of COVID. A lunch apron is £18 new 😂 I'm not sending my DD in with one, I'll just wash her clothes if they're that bad, but until second hand shop is open, I won't be buying

LinemanForTheCounty · 22/07/2020 21:09

No I haven't bought uniform. It's a pointless waste of money anyway but will be even more pointless if schools close again. Plus I have put it to school that as I have a clinically vulnerable child in our household that I want them all wearing fresh clothes every day and I am unable to do that if school insists on blazers. Have also invited them to buy three lots of three additional blazers in order to facilitate this if blazers are actually necessary in order to attend school. They have yet to respond.

TheCanyon · 22/07/2020 21:16

Sorry for late reply. Yes they're personalised and can order more than one. At our school the p7s wear their hoodies all through the year
Mightymurphy · 22/07/2020 21:19

Scotland here. We are joggers, t shirt and a jumper to go back in and it’s been suggested this will be it until October.

We’ve got a couple of bits but the rest I will get after Swinny makes his announcement next week.

AAT65 · 22/07/2020 21:19

Our guidelines for uniform before school term end/Swinney's announcement on 23/6 was warm, waterproof clothes suitable for lots of outside learning. As teachers similar rules were to apply. Hoodies, jeggings etc OK as our comfort/ease of movement was paramount. Don't see why that would change but no further guidance given.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 21:22

Yes I’ve bought all mine except shoes. They’ve been back in school for the past 6 weeks anyway in full uniform.

Goyle · 22/07/2020 21:27

England here. Haven't bought much yet but we have to go to an appointed supplier. Daughter still fits into most of her old stuff. We know how her class/year group is going to be managed and have been given lots of information about the "new normal".

BakewellGin1 · 22/07/2020 21:28

Yep... So far have 5 shirts, 4 trousers, pack of black socks all from Asda then two ties (as no doubt he will lose one), a blazer (one for now) and full PE kit from specialist shop.. Oh and a backpack..

I'd rather he had to wear a uniform then ruin his decent clothes wearing them to school. Plus all wearing exact same limits bullying over who has most expensive clothes, trainers and so on

Need shoes, trainers and coat yet

School have confirmed in daily but staggered end times for each year group for Term 1.
