Asking the impossible... is there a comfortable sofa bed to be found?

Looking for a sofa bed for our teeny tiny spare room.
Primarily it’s for my lovely MIL so a futon is probably too low to the ground and too hard. It will also need to be a double for the inevitable visits my sister and her husband will make once CV allows.
I’ve looked at the clic-clac styles but they have that funny dip in the middle so I can’t see how they’d be comfy plus our room is small. 170cm wide and maybe 220cm long. I’d have to have the clic clac up against the window and shed need to move it away from the wall to pull it down. So no.
Ideally i would like a spring mattress style one but they seem spendy.
Anyone slept on anything half decent which would suit a lady in her 70s for a few weeks at a time? Ideally not squillions my husband wants to spend £300 max but I can convince him otherwise for the right thing as long as she will be comfortable.

We have an IKEA Friheten, don't know if that would be too big for your space but I love it.

TerrifiedandWorried · 22/07/2020 09:27

What about a day bed? Our 16 year daughter has a tiny room and has this one www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/hemnes-day-bed-frame-with-3-drawers-white-90349326/ in grey. It pulls out to a double when needed. She loves it and says it's very comfortable. The drawers are a decent size.

We bought one from Natuzzi about 5 years ago and apparently it is comfortable. I haven’t slept on it but those who have are impressed.

Nsky · 22/07/2020 09:29

Mine was £600, argos di the fabric ones cheaper tho

AnotherEmma · 22/07/2020 09:37

You should just get a proper bed and not a sofa bed. It will be much more comfortable. Also, given the tiny room, I can't imagine there will be enough space to manoeuvre a sofa bed - you'd get stuck somewhere while trying to fold it up and down!

I'd get a double bed and make it a compact frame with storage underneath for bedding. A pocket sprung mattress if budget allows. Which? does helpful mattress reviews.

AnotherEmma · 22/07/2020 09:49

We have a guest bed which is a single bed with a trundle bed underneath, but I don't think that's the answer because two singles (2x90cm) take up more space than a double (135cm).

Iggypoppie · 22/07/2020 09:51

IKEA daybeds are the perfect solution as they have proper mattresses

AnotherEmma · 22/07/2020 09:53

You can only get out of one side of the bed though can't you? Fine for one guest but not ideal for two.

KTD27 · 22/07/2020 10:21

Agh no should have said it needs to fold back into a sofa as DH will need to use the space as an office. Even if just as a place to shut the door for conference calls but we can’t set it up as a bedroom.

But thank you I’ll have a look at those suggested

In our office we have the Ikea LYCKSELE MURBO - I’ve then brought a memory foam topper which can stay on the bed when folded - no complaints here with it from visitors :)

Ahardknocklife · 22/07/2020 10:25

We have the ikea bed linked in one of the above posts, we use the room as an office, we have a few additional cushions around the back to create more of a sofa feel. The bed is comfortable from a single or double perspective.

KTD27 · 22/07/2020 10:45

I think you might be right about the daybed. Hadn’t realised it could be extended it will be loads comfier

We had an Ikea Lycksele with the cheapest matress option and it was really comfy as a bed.

It wasnt a great sofa though as it had quite a narrow seat and yet took up more space than you'd expect as the fold is futon style so the back is very thick.

We got rid of it in the end as we wanted the space more than we needed a spare bed, but everyone who slept on it (including 17 stone dh & me) found it comfortable.

RemyHadley · 22/07/2020 11:32

John Lewis sell inflatable beds - they inflate in a couple of minutes with a pump, and my elderly mum has slept on ours with no issues for a week at a time. Folds away into one of those storage ottoman things when not in use.

AnotherEmma · 22/07/2020 11:59

Yikes that's a small room for an office and guest room. Yes if you want a desk in there as well it will have to be a small day bed. Will you remove the desk when you need to pull out the other bed for a second guest? You might need a folding desk for DH.

This would be ideal but slightly above budget Grin

@RemyHadley that’s what we had - a brilliant aero bed which has been going strong for years but she slept on it over the weekend and woke up in the middle of the night moving around like she was on jelly. She saw the funny side after trying to get off it for 20 mins but it’s defo got a slow puncture somewhere. Think it’s put her off inflatables for life.

@AnotherEmma that actually looks handy! I’ll investigate further

Oh dear! Ours is still going strong, but I can see that would be offputting!

Friends have the study bed and if you can stretch to it, the. It is great :)

Saz12 · 22/07/2020 15:42

Don’t dismiss a futon... We’ve one from The Futon Company, with one of their better mattresses. It’s the same height as a standard double bed. It has a box drawer that tucks underneath for storing bedding. It does what we wanted it to do and is comfortable for sitting and sleeping (but doesn’t get used daily). You can change the mattress covers (and change the mattress if it wears out), and the wooden frame is solid, so I hope it should last well.... but I thought it was pretty expensive for what it is.

We didn’t have the room width to fit a day bed with truckle, as the mattress length was always out (in the futon, it’s the double bed width that’s the seat of the sofa.

We found most sofa beds with “proper” soft arms were either too wide or the mattress was v narrow.

Could you have a desk that can fold up to the wall to free up floor space when it’s used as guest room?

KTD27 · 22/07/2020 21:56

@Saz12 oh I didn’t even know that was a thing! Them being so high. Can you tell me which you have?

Gosh that’s actually really lovely - shall need to do some heavy persuading Grin

We also have a futon company bed the oke. It is a solid heavy bit of furniture and very comfortable as a bed and not low to the ground. I find it easy to put down but needs a bit of strength to get it back up. Mine is about 12 years old and used 4-5 weekends a year.

I am considering getting a single for my sons room so he can have it for sleepovers.
