Do you talk to yourself?

I do. Generally I'm able to keep it under wraps around other people, but a colleague spotted me recently and rather took the piss. How normal is it? When I do it, I'm imagining I am takling to someone else and explaining something, I think it helps me process my thoughts.

All the time, I think it helps clarify problems, doubts and worries to put them into actual words.

Enchantmentz · 20/07/2020 13:31

I do op, think it is perfectly normal. It is only thinking out loud, thoughts are fleeting so verbalising/talking to yourself gives more time for processing imo.

Call myself names sometimes if I have done something wrong or plain stupid Grin

Whenwillow · 20/07/2020 13:34

I talk to myself in my head all the time, but rarely out loud (but the odd comment out loud)

catzrulz · 20/07/2020 13:35

I talk to our dogs like people, just general chat through the day, also I've noticed lately I tend to sigh and say oh dear a lot.
I'm 54 not 94, I think the family are checking out care homes sooner rather than later.

readingismycardio · 20/07/2020 13:36

Yeap, I need some advice from an expert😂

readingismycardio · 20/07/2020 13:36

Joke aside, apparently it's really healthy

Elouera · 20/07/2020 13:39

Do you mean to actually say words out load that others can hear, or just in your mind?

Thinking them in your mind, then yes, I do. Speaking them out loud- definitely not!

I used to work with a women that did this and it was not only bloody annoying but frankly bizarre. Why can't people have the thoughts in their head instead? Why out loud?

The whole thing reminds me of that film 'Shirely Valentine' where the woman is so bored she has to talk to herself for company. Sorry, but if I heard someone doing it, I'd assume they had a mental health disorder, on drugs, learning issues or a problem where they couldn't process thoughts quietly in their own mind.

Iwantacookie · 20/07/2020 13:50

Yes sometimes I need expert advice Grin

okeypoke · 20/07/2020 13:54

Yes!

I often disguise it by talking to the cat though!

Enchantmentz · 20/07/2020 13:55

I was once at a fwb and went to the bathroom and seen the state of my face in the early hours of the morning. Started telling myself how awful I looked etc, hear fwb chuckling away at my commentary.

frustrationcentral · 20/07/2020 13:57

Definitely! In fact I can do a long drive (alone) and have talked the whole time!! Grin

Tlollj · 20/07/2020 13:58

I do it all the time. And don’t always make a noise just mouth the words.
Wish I could stop. I spend a lot of time alone I think that’s why.

DrDavidBanner · 20/07/2020 14:01

I do, all the time. Sometimes when I have loads of thoughts running round my head it just helps me focus. I know it can be irritating for colleagues, but my colleagues are not without their irritating quirks so I'm sure they can deal with it.

TheSandman · 20/07/2020 14:07

All the time. Mostly while trying to work something out. And often while trying to find out what my inner monologue is going on about. When I'm writing, and I can't understand what it's trying to say - I sometimes turn it onto a dialogue (with myself) to find out.

TheCanyon · 20/07/2020 14:14

All the time. Dh has spent the majority of lockdown asking what is it? I'm having to spend an awful lot of time turning random words int I sings so I don't look like a total tit Grin

H1978 · 20/07/2020 15:27

Yep all the time, it’s the only time I ever fully listen 😂

WendyHoused · 20/07/2020 15:30

Sure. And I talk to inanimate objects. The oven timer, for example, frequently gets told to “keep your hair on, I heard you the first time.”

CatBatCat · 20/07/2020 16:13

Yes because it slows down my thought processes which will race at a hundred miles an hour so it gives my cognitive processes a chance to catch up.

mrsswayze · 20/07/2020 16:44

My teenager caught me talking to myself when I was loading the washing machine, he enjoyed slagging me off! I do it a lot usually as I've got so much to remember or going around my head. I do it at work all lot but not in front of patients BlushGrin

AnneOfCleavage · 20/07/2020 17:28

I enjoy a mutter to myself especially when my pc isn't doing what I want it to but my sister used to love a good old waffle to herself when we lived at home together. I remember my dad calling up the stairs "Can you and your friend come down for dinner" as she was quite a vocal waffler rather than my muted muttering 😂 I still catch her doing it when we meet up and she's making a cuppa in another room to me.

spiderlight · 20/07/2020 17:53

ALL the time - well, mostly I talk to the dog, but same difference. He's a very good listener.

Catiopea · 20/07/2020 18:15

I do this too (& have used exactly the phrase ‘keep your hair on I heard you the first time’ to phone/timer/the cat Grin)

I don’t care if people think I’m mad, I think its good for my own well-being and that’s what matters, it’s not like I’m hurting them in any way ffs Hmm

And damn, my plants are thriving Grin

managedmis · 20/07/2020 18:17

Oh god yes

wanderings · 20/07/2020 18:21

As Blackadder said, "it's the only way I can be sure of intelligent conversation".

@Elouera I too was thinking of Shirley Valentine, talking to herself, and to objects. "Don't you agree, wall?"

BrandyandBabycham · 20/07/2020 18:22

Yes loads! And as I get older I do it more & excuse myself as a dotty middle aged lady lol 🤣🤣🤣
