Things that are lovely but really not worth doing.

I got a big bag of cheap limes. Just spent 2 hours making lime curd. I’m sticky, there’s sticky washing up and I’ve got a jar and a bit. It’s delicious but no better than prestige shop bought.
What else?

Puff pastry!

Dozer · 19/07/2020 16:22

Home made sloe gin, elderflower cordial. Home made bread/pizza dough, until (I presume) you know what you’re doing!

All chutneys.

Assume fermented foods too, never tried!

Strugglingtodomybest · 19/07/2020 16:24

That's how I felt after boiling a chicken carcass to make my own stock. It was bloody delicious but no, never again.

Onestepup · 19/07/2020 16:27

Nearly all cooking Grin

katy1213 · 19/07/2020 16:30

Lemon curd and candied peel - worth it. Elderflower cordial - nicer than shop-bought but too much faff. Marmalade - depends on my mood.

SarahAndQuack · 19/07/2020 16:30

Ooh, no, I disagree, I love making curd and was surprised how easy it is. Just loads of stirring. If you can get bergamot lemons it's amazing.

I can't be arsed cooking steak. The smell clings to everything, and it's never as good as even a fairly rubbish restaurant version.

Not cooking related, but I'm not sure I'd bother trying to grow artichokes or cauliflowers or anything that bugs get into, again.

Dozer · 19/07/2020 16:32

Oh yes, gardening! So much effort and uncertainty, at the mercy of nature.

Disagree about steak, DH buys/cooks good steak, though trimmings much better in restaurants.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 19/07/2020 16:34

All domestic tasks that ca possibly be outsourced except embroidery which is very calming.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 19/07/2020 16:35

Ironing a fitted bottom sheet. A faff and you can’t see it when it’s on the bed anyway, plusthe stretching takes out most of the wrinkles anyway!

EatsShootsAndRuns · 19/07/2020 16:38

Ironing, full stop.

Pointless activity.

PicsInRed · 19/07/2020 16:38

Any form of baking.

Any form of cooking actually.
I've always vowed, when money's no less of an object, I'll eat only at restaurants. 😂

Also, home espresso machines. As a Kiwi, coffee's a big deal for me but the fuck I'm ever cleaning one of those again.

betteliefsen · 19/07/2020 16:39

Home made loaves of bread. Bread rolls are worth it but loaves are bread are so much faff and are gone in 5 minutes.

breadcakebiscuits · 19/07/2020 16:39

Jam.

Most home baking.

Any professional facial.

AdaColeman · 19/07/2020 16:39

Christmas dinner, all those weeks of preparation, red cabbage simmered for hours, hand rolled pigs in blankets, sprouts cooked nine ways, all eaten in a flash.

Just buy it ready prepped from a supermarket, no one will know or care.

Geraniumblue · 19/07/2020 16:43

I never iron bedding. But homemade pizza can be amazing, once you get the hang of it.

onalongsabbatical · 19/07/2020 16:44

Christmas, the whole shebang. Grin

Florabritannica · 19/07/2020 16:45

Crumpets. Never again.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 19/07/2020 16:46

Peeling potatoes before making mash.

LesLavandes · 19/07/2020 16:47

Oh I agree with Christmas. I find it so stressful. Sorry, all you Christmas lovers but my family are just difficult

onemouseplace · 19/07/2020 16:48

Gnocchi. Never again.

LesLavandes · 19/07/2020 16:49

Ps. I loved it growing up. It was magical but I can't seem to make magic

MsTSwift · 19/07/2020 16:49

Making clothes. Took mil dd and I 6 hours to make a dress for dd as a fun activity. It was not fun could have bought a nicer one for a tenner from m and s.

Some homemade things are worth it - sponge cake and scones are best home made. Tarts and flans definitely better bought

CupcakesK · 19/07/2020 16:52

Homemade croissants. Taste no different to shop bought and take over a day of faffing about to make

Dozer · 19/07/2020 16:53

PicsInRed If came into a lot of money the first thing I’d do is hire a chef to cook for the family. Like Michelle Obama did!

CremeEggThief · 19/07/2020 16:54

A lot of foods baked or cooked from scratch. Maybe it's because I have mild ME/CFS and am very aware/anxious of energy levels, but a lot of the time, the better taste of home baking or cooking from scratch does not make up for the extra effort involved in preparation and tidying up afterwards. A few weeks ago, DS (17) decided to make pizza dough and pizza from scratch while I was out on a long walk.😬 Delicious as it was, I still feel exhausted whenever I think of all the tidying up!
