Which proverbs do you think AREN'T true?

As I've grown older, I've discovered that more and more proverbs ring true to me.

However, there's still a good few that I think are rubbish, either because they're false or offensive (yet people still say them)

For example:

"A woman's work is never done" (I find this one offensive)

"All you need is love" (nope!)

"Cold hands, warm heart" (wtf?)

Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive. Liars invariably get found out.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 19/07/2020 00:18

Oops that one is true

Gingerkittykat · 19/07/2020 00:39

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Have they ever lived with PTSD?

Fantasisa · 19/07/2020 00:40

What goes around, comes around

willowdean · 19/07/2020 00:42

Agree with ‘what goes around comes around’ and also ‘everything happens for a reason’

Fantasisa · 19/07/2020 00:44

God yes, I find 'everything happens for a reason' infuriating and insulting.

@VaggieMight 'God was watching over me' sure he was, just not the 200 other people who died in the landslide/earthquake/plane crash.

Many proverbs have their opposites and many are sometimes true and sometimes not.

I think that many are about urging caution on 'youth'. That is 'old wives tales' past from mothers to teenagers.

'Look before you Leap' and 'A stitch in time saves nine'. Make a lot of sense in many situations.

'Cold hands warm heart' really means. 'A practical solution is one that care about the outcome'. or It's no good being soft when tough love is needed. Nothing to do with temperature.

'A woman's work is never done' = there is always something that still needs doing and it usually ends up being a women's job to do it. (crap but still often true)

All you need is love - clearly not true BUT if you love enough (mother to child?) you will go to the end of the earth to make it happen

Yes they are crap BUT there are ways in which they make sense (in a different lifetime)

midsomermurderess · 19/07/2020 02:23

Everything happens for a reason. Utter twaddle. If it even counts as a proverb.

safariboot · 19/07/2020 02:35

I think we can safely consign spare the rod and spoil the child to the history books.

BitOfFun · 19/07/2020 02:41

I love the way that many proverbs have an opposite.

Discretion is the better part of valour versus Fortune favours the brave

Absence makes the heart grow fonder versus Out of sight, out of mind

Ignorance is bliss versus Knowledge is power

All good things come to those who wait versus Time and tide wait for no man

There are bound to be more, but they are what come to me off the top of my head.

Pelleas · 19/07/2020 07:20

'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me'.

Tripe.

MsTSwift · 19/07/2020 07:27

My favourite is live by the sword die by the sword - dramatic and true!

Rystall · 19/07/2020 07:28

I’ve always hated ‘there’s no smoke without fire’. How utterly damaging and unfair.

labazsisgoingmad · 19/07/2020 10:01

a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

never understand that one and i have not time to go faffing about in bushes plus knowing my luck bird would crap on me anyway

Somanysocks · 19/07/2020 10:20

A bird in the hand one is absolutely true, it is the principle behind all game shows.

PatricksRum · 19/07/2020 11:32

This is what I was told when a family member tried to sexually assault me.
Pippin2028 · 19/07/2020 11:51

I hate 'beggars can't be choosers' with a passion. It is basically implying poorer people don't deserve the nicer things in life and have to put up with crap circumstances.

Walkingthedog46 · 19/07/2020 11:52

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Not true.

labazsisgoingmad · 19/07/2020 14:10

i agree Walkingthedog46 absence makes you see how much easier it is to live without them

Goldenbear · 19/07/2020 19:29

'A bird in the hand...' but surely discourages risk taking which is not great for innovation and progress.

JovialNickname · 20/07/2020 02:30

It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all... Not always

JovialNickname · 20/07/2020 02:33

When one door closes another opens.... also not true (and the closing door usually slams you in the arse on the way out)
