DH about to get the sack, I’m so worried. Can anyone reassure me that we’ll be ok please?

I can’t go into details but it’s looking very likely that he’ll get the sack next week. I feel sick to my stomach. I don’t think we’ll be entitled to anything! I earn £1300 a month for 23hrs work, our mortgage payments are £500 a month and we have one DC who’s 12.

We have £4k in savings which I think we could make last for 4 months if we watched every penny. I’ve been going through our outgoings and we’re already very frugal. The only saving I think we can make is our phones.

I just feel horrible. We’re a really hard working family, never claimed benefit before (apart from our £80 a month child benefit).

Has anyone been through this and it worked out ok?

So glad things are looking up for you!

Mightymurphy · 21/07/2020 19:39

That’s better news OP. I’m glad.

Being a couple, mortgage instead of rent and only having one child all count against you in the current benefits system. People can't be sacked without warnings unless for something really serious.

Viviennemary · 21/07/2020 19:46

Didnt read the whole thread so missed your last post. Sorry. What a relief for you.

topcat2014 · 21/07/2020 19:47

I am glad things turned out better than you feared

Soontobe60 · 21/07/2020 19:52

So pleased things worked out for you and dh x

Cam2020 · 21/07/2020 19:54

You must be feeling so stressed with the uncertainty right now Flowers

I think references generally consist of: dates of employment, job title, salary these days. Depending on the seniority of the role, they may do a telephone interview with a previous employer but they have to be very careful not to say anything defamatory.

If it makes you feel any better, I once worked with an accountant who fudged the numbers when they didn't add up and got sacked for false accounting but they still got another job of the same level in the same field. People do make mistakes, including judgement of errors.

Cam2020 · 21/07/2020 19:55

Sorry, totally missed update Blush

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 21/07/2020 19:55

Great news!

HelloDulling · 21/07/2020 19:58

Such good news, OP. So happy for you both. Mistakes happen, I’m glad that the RM had the sense to look at the bigger picture.

Lamby225 · 21/07/2020 19:58

Glad things have worked out OP 🌸

purplecorkheart · 21/07/2020 19:58

So glad that it has worked out for you both. Might be worth you dp contacting his union and seeing if there is someone he can have a chat with. I have a friend who has something similar to ptsd due to something similar to what your husband went through. He has the full support of his family and friends but has been doing so much better since he spoke to a support person in his Union.

spongedog · 21/07/2020 20:01

Came to the thread late, but really good news.

And your thoughts about increasing that savings buffer are really sound. (Although it does irritate me about UC and the changes from tax credits etc, that prudent, long hard working, people couldnt claim UC if they needed to, as in your situation, if savings are not much more than yours.)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 21/07/2020 20:08

There you go! I told you they’d look favourably on him for one mistake with him being a good worker and it being the Covid situation!

Shitty of the line manager to scare you all like that!

Greyblueeyes · 21/07/2020 20:11

What a relief!

notsureofname · 21/07/2020 20:13

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 21/07/2020 20:28

OP - I'm beyond pleased to read this update and so glad that your DH's RM obviously paid attempt to his work history and other relevant factors.

Building up your savings sounds like a very wise plan for the future.

bibbitybobbitycats · 21/07/2020 20:32

OP, I am so happy for you!

Arthersleep · 21/07/2020 20:33

This is really lovely news OP! Really pleased for you all! Hope that it doesn't affect his confidence too much.

Coquohvan · 21/07/2020 20:41

What a great updateSmileso pleased for you all

Firstimer703 · 21/07/2020 20:56

Call Citizens Advice or Stepchange OP as soon as possible. Not certain about a reference but I guess if it isn't a safety issue then might be OK. Maybe it won't happen as you think it will. If it does, get DH to reach out to contacts about a new role, get advice on your finances and worry about the reference issue if it happens. Sending support. I'm sure things will work out.

Just came across this thread and was going to wish you good luck but can see that you've had a positive outcome. Pleased for you as it must have been an awful couple of days worrying.
