Do your teens have locks on their doors?

Quick poll...are your teens allowed to lock their bedroom doors?

OP posts:
PollyParrotsCrackers · 17/07/2020 19:58

No, only door with a lock is the bathroom here.

somewheresorted · 17/07/2020 19:59

No. Had 3 and none of them ever had a lock

dementedpixie · 17/07/2020 19:59

No

PhilCornwall1 · 17/07/2020 19:59

No, there are no locks on any of the bedroom doors and never will be. I think it's a safety hazard.

mbosnz · 17/07/2020 19:59

No, at the moment one of them is lucky to have a bloody door on their door.

EasilyDelighted · 17/07/2020 20:00

No, no locks apart from the bathroom here.

KarenMcKaren · 17/07/2020 20:01

Yes.

JustCallMeGriffin · 17/07/2020 20:02

No. We don't have a lock on our bathroom door either.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 17/07/2020 20:03

No, no-one should need a lock on their door

PurpleLily7 · 17/07/2020 20:04

So far many more no's.
My two do have locks, because I didn't when I was a teen and I hated it and never felt completely private. But I'm wondering what the right thing is, really!

OP posts:
Babdoc · 17/07/2020 20:04

No, neither of them. But I respected their privacy and always knocked and waited for permission before entering. Locks would have been dangerous - one of my DDs has severe depression and has twice attempted suicide, although is now stable on medication and in her 30’s.

redstripewidow · 17/07/2020 20:05

I think a lock on the outside is fair- so they can maintain their private space/mess without siblings or parents "invading"- when they are in their room they should not lock themselves in- but a house rule of knocking and waiting....

PurpleLily7 · 17/07/2020 20:06

But since they've got locks, I don't know if it would be possible to change to no locks without WW3 starting...

Do you worry about them locking their doors? Or just think perhaps they shouldn’t.
I wonder if perhaps you don’t need to panic if you don’t think they’ll be up to that much.

pointythings · 17/07/2020 20:10

Mine would be allowed locks if they wanted, but they don't. We just always knock. I don't have a lock either.

We were thinking about it at one point when their father was crossing boundaries, but then things went enormously tits up and I kicked him out, and the trust was back.

CherryPavlova · 17/07/2020 20:11

No. We don’t have many locks at all. The bathrooms can be locked, but rarely are. Bedrooms no locks on any of them.
It’s never been an issue.

Cattiwampus · 17/07/2020 20:12

No, but we always knock and wait, as do they.

Pinecone88 · 17/07/2020 20:12

I had a lock on the door when I was a teenager, mostly to keep my brother out and in general I liked to be alone and privacy was important.
I don't see a problem with it 🤷🏼‍♀️

SuperStay7 · 17/07/2020 20:13

No, but we never go in without knocking and waiting to be asked to come in.

PurpleLily7 · 17/07/2020 20:14

I'm not worried, and I want them to have their privacy as I know how important it is. But I tend to over-think things and start doubting myself.

Argh sorry.

If I was wanting to speak I’d usually shout up the stairs at their end of the house. They never really spent much time in their rooms despite having desks etc. They still preferred to sit at the kitchen table to work.

cptartapp · 17/07/2020 20:15

No locks on any internal doors. If you knock and wait there's no need.
