Quick poll...are your teens allowed to lock their bedroom doors?

OP posts:

Yes the bathroom lock freaks me out too.
Years ago someone I know lost a family member who had a epileptic fit in the bath and drowned. Haunted me for ages.
Watching 'girl oh a train' also made me stressed.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 17/07/2020 21:22

DD is only 6 so not an issue yet.

As a teen myself, we never had locks on the doors. My parents knocked and waited.

When DD is older, I will knock and wait. It’s basic decency and respect! Now, we have a lock on the bathroom door but you can easily undo it from the outside. I would take off anything else.

BillywilliamV · 17/07/2020 21:23

Next door does, but her brother is autistic and lacks boundaries I believe!

isabellerossignol · 17/07/2020 21:24

No. But from the age of maybe 10 we made sure that we always knocked and waited for an answer before going into her bedroom. So she knows that her privacy will be maintained and she has no reason to actually need a lock.

MrsAvocet · 17/07/2020 21:29

No. Only locks here are on the bathrooms/toilet and 2 out of the 3 of them don't work.Grin

Aragog · 17/07/2020 21:32

No, only rooms with locks on are the bathrooms.

Locks on bedrooms can be a major fire hazard so it wouldn't ever be happening here.

Devlocopop · 17/07/2020 21:34

But the only reason I succumbed is that our 7yo goes into their bedrooms

Your punishments are not harsh enough, unless of course they walk into the staff room at school or a classroom they shouldn't be in. They must know the rules of the school so they must learn the rules at home. What punishment did they get for going into a sibling's room? They understand ownership at 7.

We don't have locks on doors here as everyone respects the closed door. You knock and wait for a reply.

OddBoots · 17/07/2020 21:46

One has a small bolt on the inside but only because it used to be our room and we didn't remove it when we moved around. I have never known them use it though, I knock and come in when invited.

H1978 · 17/07/2020 21:48

No, only our bedroom has a lock but I remember having one as a teen but never really used it.

bengalcat · 17/07/2020 21:48

No but there are no locks on doors here apart from the front , patio and garden door

monkeyonthetable · 17/07/2020 21:50

No. Absolutely no need. We'd alway knock before entering. Usually their doors are wide open anyway as they have nothing to hide.

Deadringer · 17/07/2020 21:52

We all have locks on our doors, i don't think its a big deal. We knock before we enter too.

duletty · 17/07/2020 21:52

Yes 16 year old does, he’s entitled to have 100% privacy. It’s a latch so easy to bust if an emergency. We also have a lock on our door (I wouldn’t be able to relax if not) two younger children are excitable and chatty...

talkingkrustydoll · 17/07/2020 21:52

No only doors with locks are the toilet and bathroom. My 15yr old who I believed to be really happy tried to kill herself earlier this year. God knows what would have happened if I couldn't get in the room.

Choufleur · 17/07/2020 21:54

No none of our bedrooms have locks.

coronabeer23 · 17/07/2020 21:55

Absolutely not. It has never occurred to me

m0therofdragons · 17/07/2020 21:56

No but we have a rule that if the door is shut you must knock and only enter if given permission. We have a massive bolt on our door but that was from the previous owners and I find it weird.

cuntryclub · 17/07/2020 21:59

Locks? No. Only on the bathroom. Why would they need a lock?

Mrskeats · 17/07/2020 22:00

That's terrible talking
I hope things are better now

talkingkrustydoll · 17/07/2020 22:03

@Mrskeats yes thanks she had been hiding an eating disorder too. She's getting the help she needs at last but scary to think what would have happened.

I had a friend who moved into a house with bolts on the outside of all the bedroom doors which was very strange.

Didn't mean to post that twice.

Alloverthegrapevine · 17/07/2020 22:07

No, they've never even suggested that they might want one but we do always knock before going in because I don't want any unpleasant surprises

Thegereldine3000 · 17/07/2020 22:07

I don't see the problem with lock's on a teenager's door. They should have a right to their own space.

ExclamationPerfume · 17/07/2020 22:11

No. The only room with a lock is the bathroom.
