@longtompot that scene would make a lovely quirky painting!

I've fallen down a very soothing rabbit hole thanks to this thread of watching beekeeping videos by women. Seriously tempted to actually get into this. @UnaOfStormhold is this a terrible idea? Is it a super time consuming/expensive hobby?

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 17/07/2020 15:57

This is so cool! Now I sort-of want to have a swarm of bees arrive at my garden ...

Cocolapew · 17/07/2020 16:42

@longtompot

I once saw a little blue van waiting at the lights on a roundabout we were driving on, with the driver and the passenger in full bee keepers garb with bees all over the place! I guess they had just collected a swarm or were transporting a hive. It's an image that's never left me.
Good grief that's brilliant Grin

I had a small swarm turn up in my front garden about a month ago. I put out a call to beekeepers on my local FB page, and a couple of chaps turned up that evening. One of them took a brush and swept them off the wall into a large polystyrene box.

OMG the noise. It was like the box was vibrating. They were furious Grin

It is a great hobby - can be expensive to start buying hive and kit, and finding a space to put them can be challenging. You'll need to inspect the bees every week in summer, hardly do anything in winter. Best place to start is your local beekeeping association who run beginners courses and taster sessions (or hopefully will when possible again). It's best to get a feel for whether you're comfy being around bees before you start spending money and there's little substitute for actually holding a frame with bees crawling all over it and seeing if you enjoy the experience!

Lovely post OP! I’m sure this image is as old as the hills, but I thought I’d leave it here in case people hadn’t seen it.

We get bees swarming in our office porch every year. No idea why. No-one has ever got stung we just have to use the back entrance for a while. Every time it happens the local beekeeper comes out and collects them and gives us some free jars of honey.

One year something went wrong and they got inside the roofspace and could not easily be retrieved and by the time NHS estates rumbled into gear to take the plasterboard down it was quite incredible how many there were. The whole porch roofspace was alive and moving like something out of a horror movie.

It is pretty fascinating though. I loved that video of them all trooping calmly into the hive up the white sheet. When she said 'and now put them in the car' I did think that was brave driving with a box of bees wrapped up in a sheet. I thought of how DH and DS react if even a fly gets in the car and decided they would not make it as beekeepers.

We have a building that has been empty for about 6 years now and every year honeybees can be seen going in and out of one of the upstairs windows.

Fanthorpe · 18/07/2020 13:35

@Xiaoxiong I’ve always wanted to keep bees, I think it’s the most wonderful idea, they’re amazing creatures.

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 18/07/2020 16:18

We had a swarm of honeybees make a nest in a big box in our shed last summer. I phoned a local beekeeper and he came out and collected them. They’d only been there a few days and had already made a honeycomb. It was amazing! (We’d been away a couple of nights and they definitely weren’t there before we went!)

I've just chased a wasp our of my bedroom and he's now going mad trying to get back in Confused banging against the window, flying away then coming back to ram it Hmm
It's not a bee so he can clear off.

What would they have done if you'd left them there ?

Hopefully fly off eventually, I don't fancy 10,000 bees knocking about my front garden though Smile Beekeeper on his way over.

Have you got another batch arriving?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/07/2020 18:28

Longtompot
My mate and his Dad used to do that. His Dad is still a beekeeper and sells local honey but back in the days when he was having to transport them he had a little sign made for his van (like the ones dog owners who do Crufts have) it said:
‘Show Bees In Transit’

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/07/2020 18:29

Do you think it’s the same lot, having made their way back? And this time it’s personal......Grin

thunderthighsohwoe · 18/07/2020 18:30

I’m so glad it was bees. If wasps started swarming (and let’s be fair, we can’t rule anything out in 2020) I don’t think I’d be able to open any windows ever again.

I think it's just a few hundred remainers Grin, it lashed here yesterday so I thought they would go, they weren't in the bush yesterday but darting about and buzzing around the branch that Mr BK cut off.
I feel like I'm running a bee sanctuary.
I don't even like honey🍯

So this exploding bee thing. How many are we talking?

A queen bee goes for a flight and some get close and kaput? Do they need to do the deed to die

Cocolapew · 18/07/2020 18:47

Yes they have to mate then boom.
I don't know how they mate, if the queen is flying through a mass of drones, either they have a really good aim or they don't meet to find a hole 😄
