I'm excited, and I'm not even there! Grin

He asked where we were, he said it causes bad feelings if you go and get a swarm 3 miles out of the radius of the beekeepers house Shock

Bad feelings between beekeepers, or bad feelings among the bees who don't want to leave their patch?!

LizzieMacQueen · 16/07/2020 17:21

So do the bees 'belong' to a particular beekeeper or are they wild and he/she is coming to claim them?

Cocolapew · 16/07/2020 17:23

They're wild but you aren't allowed to collect a swarm more then 3 miles from your home. Beekeepers politics.

He says it's best to get them lifted in case they go down the chimney then it's impossible to get them Shock

The saga of the miffed beekeepers...
Pix please please please OP!

NatashaRomanov · 16/07/2020 17:47

I hope they are all safely collected.
Our neighbours had a swarm that ended up inside. And got into the walls and under the floorboards!
They couldn't be removed sadly, and had to be more permanently dealt with.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 16/07/2020 17:57

I’ve see photos of them congregated on a car before. It’s quite strange.

UnaOfStormhold · 16/07/2020 18:00

Beekeeper here, I've never heard that about 3 miles when collecting swarms. Basically unless another beekeeper has followed the swarm from their apiary to the temporary site maintaining sight all the way they're anyone's for the taking. Though it may be a local convention.

UnaOfStormhold · 16/07/2020 18:02

Bees that are swarming are stuffed with honey and very docile by the way, highly unlikely to sting!

Mumdiva99 · 16/07/2020 18:08

I'm so excited for you. I saw a swarm earlier this year which I think came from a local arts centre with hives in the garden. I contacted them but never heard back and one day they had gone. You are lucky to see him come and do his thing!! Pictures please.

CountFosco · 16/07/2020 18:08

We had bees in an outbuilding once, beekeeper came and got them. Not as impressive as that swarm though!

Donelurking · 16/07/2020 18:10

Bees. Wasps don’t swarm. There’ll be someone local who would live to come and collect them

Carandi · 16/07/2020 18:12

It's a bee swarm. We had one outside a couple of months ago. Phoned a local bee keeper who came quite quickly to remove it for free. He said it's best to remove them professionally as they'll be moved straight to a hive. If left to their own devices they could die as the bees will run out of energy before they relocate and build a new home. It's fascinating to watch the removal.

elephantoverthehill · 16/07/2020 18:18

I am looking forward to the next installment.

Carandi · 16/07/2020 18:23

Looking forward to bee collecting pics!!

ThickFast · 16/07/2020 18:33

@CoveredInBeeeees lol at your post.

GreyGardens88 · 16/07/2020 18:34

We had some swarming by our kitchen door, they moved on after a few hours. I would have left them to it

TwentyViginti · 16/07/2020 18:37

Thank you Carandi! wow! So interesting to see so many bees in a swarm.

Caoilainn · 16/07/2020 18:41

@mumto3boysHE

Pest controller here. That's a feral honey bee swarm. They should move on by tomorrow. You could call a local bee keeper and they'll come and collect them.
I've not heard of feral honeybees before. That's very cool, I want some too! Grin

The most amazing thing to watch is hiving swarms - basically you collect them in a box, wait until all the scouts are home again, then prepare a hive for them to go into, place a board with a sheet over it sloping up to the hive entrance, and then dump out the box of bees at the bottom of the sheet. They'll be confused for a bit, but generally walk up the slope, and the first ones to find it will start fanning their wings and producing a scent to say "over here", after which all the bees will walk up the slope and into the hive.

Here's a video of it: - about 5 mins in you suddenly see them all pour in
