Hair salons: would you expect to pay full price if this happens?

Just musing here...
Finally managed to book a much needed trim for tomorrow at my local salon. My hair is past my waist so I desperately need it.
I was just reading the guidelines they texted me and they all sound fine to me, including having to wash my hair at home before I arrive at the salon.

Not gonna lie but that's one of my favourite things about my haircuts, not having to wash and dry my unruly hair for a few days but I'm fine with doing it myself. However would you still expect to pay full price? I'll be paying £50 minimum.
I'll pay it regardless if that's the case but just wanted to get opinions

You have to wash your own hair? Is this standard? It's my favourite thing about going too. In fact it's the only bit I do like. Watching this with interest

I think in any other circumstances I wouldn’t but from what I’ve understood hairdressers aren’t going to be making the same amount of money due to reducing customers in the salon as well as lost money from being shut so I wouldn’t be quibbling it.

Witchofzog · 16/07/2020 10:24

I wouldn't expect to pay full price either as surely it's extra time plus the shampoo and conditioner that is factored into the price

I wouldn’t expect to pay full price. You won’t be getting the service you normally pay for, so it should be a little cheaper in my opinion.

I also love having my hair washed - it’s the best thing about going to the hairdresser (I also have long hair!).

Gymntonic · 16/07/2020 10:27

Are you arriving with wet hair and they're drying and styling it? Or a dry cut? Dry cut would definitely be cheaper.
Mine is washing and drying hair. Had to go separately for cut, then highlights a week later though. Prices adjusted accordingly as I didn't have it styles after the colour just blasted with a hairdryer.

Apolloanddaphne · 16/07/2020 10:28

I would pay full price because I want my hairdressers to remain open and obviously they will have lost a lot of money being closed for a prolonged period. In order to be able to operate safely they will now have extra costs cleaning for cleaning and protective wear to factor in so it will all balance out.

So the guidelines they sent to "wash your hair before you arrive (dry hair for colour" so I'm assuming they want me in with wet hair.

Like I said I'll pay whatever they ask because they have been closed for so long, but they are one of the major well known salons in my area and they will be fully booked for weeks.

I'd expect some kind of cheaper rate as they're not washing and conditioning your hair. You're just having a cut.

nevergoingoutagain · 16/07/2020 10:31

I had my hair washed when I got mine cut. I would expect to pay less if washing my own hair.

Batqueen · 16/07/2020 10:33

When I got mine done recently they sprayed it with a water bottle to dampen it down.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 16/07/2020 10:34

Why don't they wash hair?
Asking as I went last weekend and there were no restrictions on hair washes.

To answer your question, I would expect a small discount, yes.

pinkgin85 · 16/07/2020 10:37

Ok it seems that the no hair washing isn't a government requirement then? Strange I will query that with the hairstylist tomorrow. Maybe they're just being extra cautious, which again I don't mind but paying £50+ for just a trim will hurt Sad will be okay for a one off though but not again

I wouldn't expect to pay full price. That being said, don't expect to pay much less - if anything - than you were before. I had a wash & cut but no b/d last week and paid just £2 less than I did before. I guess they need to cover their extra costs somehow.

BombyliusMajor · 16/07/2020 10:38

If they’re booked solid for months, then I guess people are willing to pay the prices they are asking. If you’d rather not, you could always look for a different salon. I think we’re going to need to accept getting less for our money than we did before, in all sorts of areas, if the economy is going to recover at all. It’s one of the things that is making life terrifying for people in need, and a bit meh for those of us lucky enough to be relatively financially secure.

BalletShoe · 16/07/2020 10:39

Maybe to do with timing more than anhthing - the less time people spend in the salon, the quicker they can get people in and out to work through their backlog.

You're right but at the moment I don't know if they have changed their prices or kept them the same so can't say. I'll be going there regardless and as a one off I don't mind paying the full price.

That seems quite weird, I wouldn’t be paying full price (actually I’d just go to another salon where they are offering the full package, my hairdresser is still washing hair).

HelloCanYouHearMe · 16/07/2020 10:51

I had to arrive with wet hair and at the time of booking the guidance was that they couldn't dry hair either. Turns out that had guidance had changed between my booking and the actual appt, and on the day they were able to dry hair... Only they couldn't because they had booked in additional clients to fill the time freed up by no washing/drying.

They did provide masks and disposable aprons so im in 2 minds as to whether my wet cut should have been charged at cut and dry prices

Choppedupapple · 16/07/2020 10:53

Is there a style cut into your hair? At that length could you trim it yourself? Or get a friend/partner to?

Justgivemesomepeace · 16/07/2020 10:58

I think they are probably trying to get more customers through to make up for money they are losing by not having as many people in the shop at one time. A salon near me is not doing blow drys for this reason. The salon I use is doing washes and blow drying.

MrBennsshop · 16/07/2020 10:59

I've had a cut and blow dry this week. The salon asked me to wash my own hair if possible to minimise the number of people in the washing area. Also it's one more close physical interaction which can be avoided if you wash at home. They made it clear they would wash your hair if it wasn't possible to do it yourself eg coming straight from work.

I was happy to pay full price. These are exceptional times and my hairdresser has been furloughed for months on a percentage of her basic salary, with no commission or tips.

CatBatCat · 16/07/2020 11:02

I'd expect to pay dry cut prices if they are not washing it.

Comefromaway · 16/07/2020 11:06

My hairdresser is following guidance to the letter along with guidance from an industry body she is a a member of. She insists that she wash all clients hair (even ds who would normally have a dry cut) because then she knows it is clean before she starts cutting.

Samcro · 16/07/2020 11:07

how odd. my hairdresser said he couldn't do dry cuts and had to wash my hair.
