That's not right, is it?
This must change immediately.
Where shall I go/stay, for beautiful nature walks and beach combing?

If you want beach and nature it will have to be the moors. Somewhere around Whitby.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 16/07/2020 08:40

Definitely Whitby area.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 16/07/2020 08:44

East coast lovely. Flamborough Head, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby (although rammed in summer) The moors are beautiful, Rosedale is lovely. Hutton le Hole and Lastingham. Falling Foss has a lovely tea room.

Scarby9 · 16/07/2020 08:45

And in answer to your question - it is very wrong indeed.

Katharinablum · 16/07/2020 10:40

Dales too, so many walks and although no beachcombing, lots of opportunities to paddle, wildswim. Love fountains abbey/studley royal, gorgeous walk from helmsley to rievaulx abbey, bolton abbey and the strid, grassington to linton along the wharfe. There's a good teashop walks book for north yorks, dales and moors that I can recommend, can't remember exact title

H1978 · 16/07/2020 13:10

Ingleton waterfalls is a popular location, lovely picturesque walk, and the dales too as previous poster mentioned. Another one is malham cove, especially for Harry Potter fans because they shot some scenes there.

Hoppinggreen · 16/07/2020 13:11

You’ve never lived

BloggersNetwork · 17/07/2020 07:30

@hoppinggreen. Well, I intend to remedy that this summer. I feel a little lost in terms of specific location. Whitby sounds absolutely amazing and would definitely love to visit, but as a family we don't do well with crowds. Ideally we would like a really good looking air b&b type property for a family of 4, surrounded by prettiness, so we can just be lazy if we feel like it, go for long nature walks and also to the coast. I wonder if anyone could help me narrow this down a bit. I am thinking it might be a good idea to split our stay, say 3 nights in one place and 3 in another. A bike rental place would be a bonus.

We had a holiday in Filey which is just up the coast from Whitby, the beach is massive and it’s very quiet. Plenty to do for a week if you have a car. Agree Whitby is lovely (and busy).

NewYearNewTwatName · 17/07/2020 07:45

Around Malham is spectacular but a long way from any beaches, but if you have car you can make a day out of heading to the coast, just set off early!

Same you can spend a day in York too if you want a different experience to the walks and little market towns near Malham.

Katharinablum · 17/07/2020 10:39

Whitby is rammed in summer and difficult to find anywhere to park at the best of times. Pickering (small market town with castle) would be a nice choice as between coast and York, there’s also Levisham and

Goathland which are very small villages. Danby and Dalby forests (always get mixed up !) are near which I think you can cycle at.
Maybe a couple of days in York and a few days at the NY moors or on the coast ? It’s quite a big area tbh and some of the roads do get busy so you really need to get your location right !

isabellerossignol · 17/07/2020 10:46

York itself, the coast road around Whitby, Whitby itself (very overcrowded though), the Moors around Pickering, the little villages like Goathland. Is Knaresborough in Yorkshire? If so, then it's nice too.

Actually, pretty much all of it. We did two family holidays in consecutive years there when our eldest was just a toddler and there were so many places to visit that we almost went back for a third year because there were so many things we wanted to see that we hadn't been able to fit in the first couple of times. Must go back...

Tadpolesandfroglets · 18/07/2020 01:08

Goathland is not so great since they filmed Heartbeat there and now it’s just a soulless tourist trap. Used to be lovely. Staithes has a also nice and Saltburn, both by the sea.

BloggersNetwork · 20/07/2020 18:54

So excited about this, except finding accommodation seems like an impossible task. We would like a nice rural retreat for a family of 4 (teens). Any ideas anyone?

I can't seem to make this happen. I am beginning to consider hiring a campervan/mobile home type thing! Am I insane??

Yorkshire Dales National Park. Picture perfect stone villages in stunning scenery. Like a cold muddy France Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/07/2020 08:13

Are there just not enough cottages and they’re all booked up?

zigzagbetty · 22/07/2020 08:17

We stayed on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway route and got the train into whitby on seaside days. Made more exciting as it was a steam train! We stayed on a farm in Fryup and it was glorious!
We also had the first night of our honeymoon in Whitby overlooking the harbour. Parking is a bit problematic in peak months.

homemadecommunistrussia · 22/07/2020 08:17

I wouldn't bother.

AuntieMarys · 22/07/2020 08:19

Staithes is lovely.

HairyToity · 22/07/2020 08:20

We love love love Middlewood Farm Caravan Park. We get a static. It's a 10 minute walk to Robin Hood Bay beach, and beautiful countryside all around.

KatyaZamolodchikova · 22/07/2020 08:24

If you like rural beach locations try Skipsea on the east coast. You could also go for Hornsea which is more of a town and has a bit of a hipster vibe, some nice bars and restaurants. Or Withensea for a bit of a more of a traditional family seaside town vibe.

I love Whitby but it’s a bit of a mission and very busy nearly all the time. But further down the coast is more rural and beautiful. We go every year to spend time there and we love it!

HairyToity · 22/07/2020 08:25

You can bike the cinder trail if you have mountain bikes.

BloggersNetwork · 22/07/2020 08:34

Honestly I simply can't find availability for a family of 4 (kids are 16 and 13) anywhere. We'd be happy to split the stay, 3 nights in one place and another 3 elsewhere.
