Does anyone have a hybrid SUV? I want one but not sure which to go for!

My car is on its last legs AND I've just got a big promotion at work. Thinking of getting my first new car ever.

Was looking at fully electric but they won't stand up to the motorway driving we do to see family. My work commute is less than 10 miles though so hybrid should be perfect.

I like SUVs because low cars make me feel sick and I need decent boot space.

Anyone got any recommendations? Thank you!

Oh and can't stretch to the fancy brands!

Bumping for you because I’m interested to.

Someone on our street has a Seat that I think is this type. I don't know if it's an Arona or Ateca. Looks nice.

There's also a Skoda version that's similar. DP has a 10 YO VW Tiguan, which I think is the VW version of the smaller one, which he likes very much.

But anyway, both Skoda and Seat probably do cost effective versions of what you are looking for and also have good PCP deals - I had a Citigo on PCP a few years ago that was interest free and included all servicing and was only £130 pm, but that was for a vv tiny car.

Oh sorry, I now realise I've misunderstood what you mean by hybrid. I thought you meant 'like 4x4 but not quite as big as a Land Rover or a BMW X5' but now I realise that you mean one with a hybrid engine Blush

Ignore me, not sure if the Skodas and Seats do have what you want.

oakwood13 · 13/07/2020 11:48

Wait as long as you can, as car prices will go down after lots of people sadly lose their jobs later this year.

If low cars make you feel sick, I think you should seek medical advice.

We have the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid, and we love it! The range is around 27 miles fully electric in summer, less in winter as the cold makes it less efficient. But more than enough to get to the shops and back, commute to the office etc. The whole of March through June we didn't use any petrol at all, though we did regular food shop runs, and a daily drive to get DD to nap in the afternoons.

BoogleMcGroogle · 13/07/2020 12:38

Another vote for the PHEV Outlander. It's an excellent family car.

Widdendream77 · 13/07/2020 12:43

And another for the Mitsubishi phev it’s fab saved so much money and environmentally better. We managed to find a second hand one which was a steal but had to pick up from London Confused

PrincessButtockUp · 13/07/2020 12:50

How are do you have to travel to see family and how often? There are fully electric cars with a range of over 200 miles, and can take a usable amount of recharge in the time it takes to drink a motorway services coffee. The Peugeot, Hyundai and Kia models are all getting good reviews.

WaffleCash · 13/07/2020 12:53

Another vote for the PHEV Outlander. It's an excellent family car.

It actually has pretty terrible MPG if not running all electric, so anything over 25 miles or so, less if you want the heating on in winter!

IHeartKingThistle · 13/07/2020 12:59

This is interesting!

@PrincessButtockUp in normal circumstances we go 200 miles or so every couple of months. Plus UK holidays, airport schleps etc.

We looked into the all electric but the 200 mile range is only if you're travelling at 45 mph! At motorway speeds it's much less and at only 1 hour 50 to my mum's we rarely stop so it would really get inconvenient. Shame as I was getting excited about those.

I think the Mitsubishi pricing might stretch me too much tbh. I will have another look at it though and check second hand.

We've just got a PHEV Ford Kuga. It's a plug in hybrid. A lot of our running is short range so all electric, but it's got a big petrol engine for the 1000 plus journey through France to the uk. We got a huge discount on a showroom model. Really top of the range but its fabulous.

Handsnotwands · 13/07/2020 13:11

we've got a honda CR-v - i like it a lot

MeepleMe · 13/07/2020 13:14

I'm looking into a Ford Puma. SUV but not quite as large as the Kuga, looks a bit sportier and it's hybrid.

CMOTDibbler · 13/07/2020 13:17

We've got a Honda CRV hybrid and are really happy with it. Drives beautifully long distance, pulls away well, not grabby when braking. We didn't want a plug in for all the reasons you mention. Both DH and I normally do a lot of long journeys for work and don't stop, plus can't always plugin when we get to the destination so would typically only get the one use of a charge in that day

FartingInTheFence · 13/07/2020 14:37

Only two choices.

RAV4 Hybrid or CR-V Hybrid.

Looking at anything else is a waste of your time and money. End of.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/07/2020 18:02

Hmm. Kuga does look interesting and they're doing 0% deals. There's loads out there though and I'm going car blind!

Kia niro, more of a crossover than SUV really but it's a lovely car. Three options hybrid, plug in hybrid or fully electric. I have the normal hybrid and I love it.

IHeartKingThistle · 13/07/2020 22:56

DH made me a spreadsheet Grin

Agree with this.

Also, unless you are a very small person the passenger seat is cramped and you tend to sit one sided as there is a big hump in the floor on the right hand side so one leg up and one down unless you want to sit with your legs stretched out. However if you do this and the driver opens the glove compartment you will get bashed on the knees. Actually you will anyway as there is not room for adult legs.

vinoandbrie · 13/07/2020 23:20

Ford Kuga hybrid. Just a thought.

HotMess21 · 14/07/2020 22:23

My current car is a 5-door hybrid hatchback which is fine but I plan to purchase a Toyota C-HR hybrid SUV within the next 18 months. I don't feel sick in a low car however, I certainly do feel more confident being higher up.

My partner drives a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which he loves for its quietness and roomy boot space but is disappointed with the range of the electric motor.

picklemewalnuts · 14/07/2020 22:32

I got my Outlander Phev for 18k second hand. It's great.

hellhavenofury · 15/07/2020 10:52

I have just bought the Toyota CH-R Hybrid Automatic - Beautiful car!

mencken · 15/07/2020 12:29

eye of the beholder - fuck-ugly car from the reviews I've seen, narrow boot space, stupid alloy wheels, those 'dickhead-on-wheels' spoilers, shit rear visibility. Honest John does say good ride quality and good mpg though.

with that massive distracting touch-screen, I now know why it is important to keep clear of new SUVs!
