TV and Film Quotes that are “in jokes” within your family

I’m sure I’ve seen this done before (whether here or on Twitter) but it does always make me laugh to see the quotes people use in their day-to-day lives.

There’s a couple that spring to mind for me - firstly a later Friends episode where the father of the babies Monica and Chandler are going to adopt could be a murderer and Chandler refers to him as, “Shovvely Joe” - DH and I use that about anyone a bit shady!

And more recently there’s a few Brooklyn 99 episodes around a MLM scheme where they all greet each other saying “Boom Boom”; again DH and I say this to each other!

I also always pronounce Socrates as “So-crates” like in Bill and Ted, I’m sure anyone overhearing me would think I was a little bit dim.

There are definitely others, will add them if any come to mind.

Oh all the time!! Most of our conversations are peppered with film & TV quotes...

Blackadder, Airplane, Princess Bride..

"We're werewolves not swear-wolves" from What we do in the Shadows - YES!!

And our favourite is from Spaced when one of us is telling a boring anecdote 'Skip to the end...'

LeslieYep · 12/07/2020 10:43

We live near quite a famous model village, so whenever we see signs it's: ' if you wanna be a big cop in a small town, fuck off up the model village'!

Bottom here too.
If I need DH to pass me something I say 'hand, haand, haaaaaand me the remote'

Also, orangutan, git, orangutan, git!

Also, 'who thought of that, it was ME wasn't it'?

Unwrapping anything -'it's a, it's, a, a..nother brussel sprout'!

Blackadder too, with the ape creatures of the Indus have mastered this, with anything remotely simple.

BadlydoneHelen · 12/07/2020 10:43

"We're going to need a bigger boat" constantly in use in our house
"This week, I have mostly been wearing Gianni Versace" said without fail by DH whenever he trudges in from the garden in shorts/dirty t shirt/wellies combo
"To me, to you" whenever furniture is moved
"Don't tell 'em, Pike!"

Lurleene · 12/07/2020 10:44

We have just rewatched The Fast Show but first time round for DS and he has realised that our family seem to communicate entirely in Fast Show catchphrases. Today the weather is Scorchio! Whenever we are ready to do anything we are Gripped and Sorted. If we recount an anecdote we end with Which was nice! If anything goes wrong we say an understated Oh Bugger. If we put our foot in it we offer to get our coat. If we hear Jazz it is Nice. Every time I come out of the shed I feel a need to tell you what I have eaten. DS now knows where his inexplicable nickname Monkfish comes from. So many more that are part and parcel of our every day life, I guess because it started not long after DH and I met. DS is now going through a phase of describing why everything is Brilliant!

If I have to go to the bank, I’ll say ”I ‘ave to go to the bank” in the manner of Ron Moody in Oliver.

There are so many of course, but a recent one is from Avengers Endgame - if we’ve attempted a major task and not quite completed it correctly / fudged it, we shout ”Timetravel!”, like Hulk.

WinterAndRoughWeather · 12/07/2020 10:49

Oh, I also love “skip to the end...” from Spaced, when someone is dithering with an anecdote or explanation.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 12/07/2020 10:51

@lurleene

Suits you sir!

MotherMorph · 12/07/2020 10:56

At work if somethings not been done properly
"Ain't right, aint fair, ain't fit ,ain't proper" (Poldark)

theproudgeek · 12/07/2020 10:57

I offered to have the shovel speech from Buffy with a friends new partner. The concluding line is: 'if you hurt her, I will beat you to death with a shovel. A vague disclaimer is no-one's friend.'

She completely got the reference but turned down my offer.

PolloDePrimavera · 12/07/2020 10:57

When the pooch won't come in at night: "Come here you little shit" in drawly southern accent. From The Silence of the Lambs, of course!

BadlydoneHelen · 12/07/2020 11:02

Lurleene you are right about the Fast Show! Now I've read what you've posted I've realised we do lots of these too especially "Cool jazz- nice"

MuseumOfYou · 12/07/2020 11:08

From Cuckoo - 'can I stop you there? You're not holding my attention'.

StarsandBellinis · 12/07/2020 11:10

"I'm hot."
"It is well hot."
"Might be too hot."

From the Inbetweeners. DH and I every single time it's hot.

TheBlueStocking · 12/07/2020 11:12

Whenever my housemate or I come into the house, we shout Hi hi like Tim Messenger from Hot Fuzz.

Saucery · 12/07/2020 11:21

If someone’s dog is misbehaving we say “Poppy....poppy....POPPY...poppy!” like in Sightseers.

“Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once again” from Blackadder when anything goes wrong.

Just about every line from Withnail and I.

“Waiter, this conversation isn’t very good” from The Meaning Of Life if one of us is being a bit dull.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 12/07/2020 11:28

Grin I forgot about waffer thin, we use that a lot too.

Destroyedpeople · 12/07/2020 11:29

@leslieyep..'fuck off up the model village'...Grin love it.

From the same movie...

'A great big bushy beard!'

And...
'Baby clothes! They got everything in this mall!'

(the Blues Brothers)

Sidge · 12/07/2020 11:30

If I ask DD3 who is 13 to do something she doesn’t want to do she’ll shout “help, help, I’m being repressed!”

If we need a bigger anything eg bag, baking tray, we’ll drawl “we’re gonna need a bigger boat”.

Kids and I say yarp instead of yes or yeah.

My best mate and I do loads of Friends ones - pivot, really?!?, that is BRAND NEW INFORMATION! Also you’re terrible Muriel, come the fuck on Bridget, you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off (we work together and use that if we do something unexpected at work).

Also loads of Blackadder quotes. You have a WOMAN’S bottom!

CathyorClaire · 12/07/2020 11:41

'It's a local (XYZ) for local people' from The League Of Gentlemen

'Bovvered' and any place name ending in 'ham' being pronounced with the 'ham' as a separate word both from Catherine Tate

'It'll ride up with wear' and 'Suits you sir!' from Are You Being Served.

'Stupid boy' from Dad's Army.

'You may think that but I couldn't possibly comment' from the original House Of Cards.

We are old Grin

theproudgeek · 12/07/2020 12:12

We also use 'insane troll logic' from Buffy 'I find your lack of faith in me disturbing' from Star Wars.

Also, not a film but a book, the children both say 'bananaanananan' after Nanny Ogg, who knows how to start spelling banana but not how to stop.

gingerbreadslice · 12/07/2020 12:12

Me and my partner greet each other as Nessa and Dave coach. It would actually be weird now to not do it.
I always say Alright Dave? He always replies Aright Ness? Been a few years now 😂

SwankyPants · 12/07/2020 12:36

Alright gayyyy. Shaun of the Dead
Pub (including the spray) Hot Fuzz
Alright my love Hot Fuzz
Jump leads for 1 league of Gentlemen.
Loads of others

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 12/07/2020 12:38

"That is illogical captain" from Star Trek if one of us has a daft idea or says something stupid.

letsgomaths · 12/07/2020 12:43

"No cloth on!" Patricia Routledge in Talking Heads, on the couple opposite having their tea. A few photos of ours had this caption.

"I shouldn't wonder..." applied to any gloomy prediction. Said repeatedly by Puddleglum in the BBC serial of the Silver Chair.

"This televisual feast", from Fawlty Towers. Also "I'd rather have a diagram!"

"You'll be locked in." This was said a lot in a family of Crystal Maze fans, often as a penalty for losing a game. Once (on my insistence) it became a reality, in a holiday cottage. When I was the first to be bankrupted in Monopoly, I sat in the cupboard under the stairs; and I really was locked in and couldn't get out! Sad But actually I was Grin from ear to ear, and to indulge me, they kept me safely locked up until the game was over, checking on me regularly.

LajesticVantrashell · 12/07/2020 12:44

We do "ooooooooowould we call her chubby" in a very high pitched voice a'la Hugh Grant in Love Actually when someone starts a sentence with the word 'would'

Whenever I get undressed I say "So, this is my bra" to DH

"It's a deal, it's a steal, it's the sale of the fucking century" whenever someone says how much an item cost

"Ten minutes Turkish" for any time related answer

"What's it all aboooot" in a thick Geordie accent
