TV and Film Quotes that are “in jokes” within your family

I’m sure I’ve seen this done before (whether here or on Twitter) but it does always make me laugh to see the quotes people use in their day-to-day lives.

There’s a couple that spring to mind for me - firstly a later Friends episode where the father of the babies Monica and Chandler are going to adopt could be a murderer and Chandler refers to him as, “Shovvely Joe” - DH and I use that about anyone a bit shady!

And more recently there’s a few Brooklyn 99 episodes around a MLM scheme where they all greet each other saying “Boom Boom”; again DH and I say this to each other!

I also always pronounce Socrates as “So-crates” like in Bill and Ted, I’m sure anyone overhearing me would think I was a little bit dim.

There are definitely others, will add them if any come to mind.

If it's a nice day - scorcio! (fast show)
Something stupid on TV - monkey tennis (Alan Partridge)
Where shall we go for a day out - a cracking owl sanctuary (AP again)

It still has to be Monty Python for us. Mostly the classic quotes, but we also often do kind of long improvised riffs on the Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

Blackadder's 'The long winter evenings must just fly by' is possibly my all-time favourite line, though it doesn't take much to get me reciting that whole scene, if not the entire episode! Grin

DH likes to say 'What is this [random modern thing which he's never heard of] of which you speak?' which is an line adapted from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy if I’m not mistaken.

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz We use "I fuckin' love chicken" from The Young offenders when the reply to What's for dinner? is chicken.
We have also managed "I don't see pigment" a couple of times Grin

Lots of Simpsons -

He's everywhere you wanna be!
Cromulent just a normal part of our vocab now
And when I'm dragging the garden waste bin up the patio steps - attach the stone of glory!

All of the Butterfield Diet cited when examining a menu or considering what might be for dinner. Mystery meat! Hoisin Crispy Owl!

DH and I will randomly say to each other - “Got my wellies on” from the BBC comedy series, Mum. And sometimes when the DC are in bed, we’ll put on a Yorkshire accent and say, “Make fookin’ tea” from Rita, Sue and Bob too. We must have accumulated loads over the years but they’re the two that spring to mind!

Purplegloves · 23/07/2020 22:44

That’s meant to be, “Make your own fookin’ tea”!

Lots of Friday night dinner in our house...
'I'm boiling' 'no one wants to see your titties' 'Shalom, Jackie' 'crimble crumble' to name a few.
Dh and I throw quotes from the OC around at times, and dh always asks his mum what they've had for their tea a la Royce Family. Dh has loads of others - random bits of Monty Python and Alan Partridge mostly.

Friends, BlackAdder, Alan Partridge, Wayne's World are our main source of quotes. We do some of them so often I don't realise where they are from until I hear them in an episode and it's always a surprise. Inbuilt into my vocabulary now I think! "Schwing"!

APJ1 · 27/07/2020 20:44

From Gimme Gimme Gimme:

"Oh yeah, that's real funny. Excuse me while I piss myself."

From the Catherine Tate Show and her police detective character, whenever we hear mention of someone with this surname.

"Whittaker..." whispered angrily.

Every Christmas without fail either me or my brother will say 'I suppose I'll have to sit on the rickety chair' (Young Ones) and ask my mum if she's got any vodka margarine (Bottom)

Also me and my brother at any gathering at all - 'Great party, isn't it?' in clipped RP accent (The Shining)

"Wrong way down a one way streeee-eet"
