Do breastfed babies need burping?

I didn’t think they did and then I had a baby who seems to need winding lots

But I get told breastfed babies don’t need winding

Mine always did!

nowaitaminute · 10/07/2020 23:36

Mine did and both were exclusively breastfed.

Yes

Yes, they do!

Sheenais · 10/07/2020 23:39

Mine didn't always, never at night which was bloody lucky as I just fed while sleeping. But sometimes he would get really uncomfortable and then burp and vomit, I honestly think it was because he drank so fast. Luckily the next one never did.

AntennaReborn · 10/07/2020 23:40

DD definitely did!

ThatDamnScientist · 10/07/2020 23:41

My youngest is 5 and she needed winding. My SIL has just had a baby and said that she was told that babies shouldn't be winded at all...I do think that she was given questionable advice! Surely some will and some won't - more down to the individual baby rather than method of feeding.

MissEliza · 10/07/2020 23:41

Yes of course.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/07/2020 23:42

Yes!

Iwantcollarbones · 10/07/2020 23:51

Absolutely they do. 3 breastfed dc and years of windings. Although, apparently, they suffer less colic. I’ve only ever had very mild colic with mine but they still needing winding

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 10/07/2020 23:54

Neither of mine did. I remember being told bf babies didn't need it. How would I have know if they did? Do they wriggle/cry?

autumnboys · 10/07/2020 23:58

Mine all did.

Davodia · 10/07/2020 23:58

Mine rarely needed burping. He’d fall asleep while feeding so I couldn’t burp him anyway.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/07/2020 00:00

Yup. And I sucked at it. When DH went back to work the lack of his expert winding techniques were my biggest worries!

SandieCheeks · 11/07/2020 00:01

My first two never did. If they needed to burp I just sat them up after feeding and they'd burp but generally they didn't.

My third one had an uncut tongue tie and needed to burp more often.

Maltay · 11/07/2020 00:03

Not mine

stophuggingme · 11/07/2020 00:03

All three of mine did and do
The technique that always worked and only one to work was after feeding sit them up slowly and carefully one hand under their little jawline other on their flat back
Lean them forward very slowly and carefully
The air used to burp right out for all three of mine
Tiger in a tree hold was great for getting rid of trapped wind

Putting them over my shoulder was always a disaster

Thegreymethod · 11/07/2020 00:10

Not according to my mother in law who reminded me EVERY time my formula fed babies had milk, or cried, or moved "have you winded him...... (SIL doesn't need to worry about winding as she breastfed but you need to make sure you do it" (like I didn't know!!)

Zigzagzagzig · 11/07/2020 00:11

I thought all babies needed to burp?

Zigzagzagzig · 11/07/2020 00:12

I mean help with burping!

PickAChew · 11/07/2020 00:13

Yes. They still swallow air.

And it's sickening when all your lovely milk ends up decorating the walls.

namechange30000 · 11/07/2020 00:18

Yes but rarely.

vinoandbrie · 11/07/2020 00:23

Mine didn’t!

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 11/07/2020 00:28

Mine all did, particularly during the day if they had a big feed or gulped a lot (I have a fast letdown). But often during the night they would fall back to sleep in my arms and I wouldn't need to burp them.

MazDazzle · 11/07/2020 00:39

I remember reading that it’s a cultural thing. Some cultures wind, some don’t.
