Supermarkets stopping one way systems?

I’ve just been to my local supermarket and they’ve taken away the one way system. There were people walking everywhere, not able to keep 2 metres apart anymore because people are walking both ways down the same aisle. They’ve also stopped the one queue filter system so people are stood at the end of most aisles waiting in queues for the tills.

Are other shops starting to do this? Seems a bit soon to me to be stopping having these measures in place, not sure if I’m just being over cautious still though?

The systems made no sense anyway - they were a totally unnatural way of shopping and meant you couldn't double back on yourself to put something back or get something you forgot.

Plus they made you walk around way more of the shop than if you just went to wherever you needed to go and left.

Tesco near me have stopped the one payment queue. I think the arrows were still there but the lining up behind the till you want makes a mockery of any attempt at social distancing.

fussychica · 09/07/2020 17:45

I went in Aldi last week and they are locking the trolleys again and not cleaning them for you. You now have to do it yourself at the entrance which defeats the object as you have already touched the trolley (and you block the entrance whilst doing it). I was pretty put off by it and haven't been back.
They also made you pack back into the trolley rather than into your bags in the trolley. Bloody mad. Shame, it was excellent in there earlier in the lockdown.

I like the serenity of Waitrose and the quick basket shop in Morrison which means no queuing.

Crinkle77 · 09/07/2020 17:52

I went to my local Tesco on Monday and they still had the one way system and the queue filter system. I've got to call in tonight for a couple of bits so will check it out.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 09/07/2020 17:53

Are supermarkets still saying one adult per household?

Bargainhuntbore · 09/07/2020 18:42

I hated it. Up and down endless aisles just for a loaf or a bottle of wine in the way from work.

Thank god!

mightbealittlebitmad · 09/07/2020 18:50

I ignored them anyway apart from Tesco where it wasn't possible and had to ask to be let round again because I had forgotten loads of stuff. Never went back again and continued with Morrison's because it was much nicer to wander around in the direction that I wanted to go. One way systems just made things more cramped because everyone had to go down each aisle instead of veering off to different ones.

My local supermarket never implemented a one way system. However, it always felt safe as people were respectful of other people in the aisles and kept their distance. The supermarkets can put all the rules they want to in place but it really is down to the public to be sensible and keep a safe distance.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 09/07/2020 19:34

I noticed the other day that the arrows were gone in my local Tesco.

Are we still queuing to get in? Because I seem to be the only one doing that now. Everyone else just seems to walk straight in.

Crinkle77 · 09/07/2020 21:38

Just got back from Tesco and the arrows had gone. No one on the door and no one queue managing but not sure if there cos it was 8pm and the store was quiet.

ALongHardWinter · 09/07/2020 22:36

I know I'll probably get flamed for saying this, buy thank goodness for that! I am disabled and it's a total PITA trying to shop like this. If I forget something,I have to walk all the way round again, which is no fun when you find walking painful and tiring.

FrenchBoule · 09/07/2020 23:00

Tesco’s checkout system is a nightmare.
If they wanted people to keep the distance then should have estimated how many should be allowed inside at the same time.

I found one way system difficult, mostly because if you missed something then it was a nightmare to go back with full trolley.
I missed a lot of things as was distracted by the arrows- generally I’m used to looking at the shelves not floor while shopping

FluffyKittensinabasket · 09/07/2020 23:16

When I go to Waitrose, DH follows behind me and we pretend we aren’t together!

We can stop doing that now I suppose.

justasking111 · 09/07/2020 23:23

Tesco near me when I went yesterday no queue to get in but had to queue in wine aisle to get out. No one way system, but checkout operator told me to stand at end of checkout and pushed my stuff down the chute to me.

Today OH went to Tesco, queue to get in, queue in wine section that was when it got odd the person who directs you told me husband to go and a group of 4 to wait when they complained she told them they were supposed to shop solo not as a family. He also had the stand at end of till the checkout person was lobbing the stuff hard to the bottom of the chute bit he thought something would break.

I think the staff are a bit leery now the supermarket is less draconian and are twitching a bit.

VeganCow · 10/07/2020 07:35

Our big Tesco has got rid too, also removed the railings outside for queuing. I'm glad, it was harder to shop and I use self scan so like to get in and out.

SockYarn · 10/07/2020 07:43

Our local Asda hasnt, but people think their magic mask of immunity being worm far too loose or just over their mouth gives carte blanche to act as they please.

SophieB100 · 10/07/2020 09:45

@Poutintrout
Our Lidl still has bakery stuff bagged up - like you I think it's much more preferable.

Kittytheteapot · 10/07/2020 09:51

I'm about to go to do my weekly shop. I really hope the one way system has been taken away. I found it beyond annoying. Apart from anything, I always used to shop backwards, starting at the back of the shop and working forwards so I picked up fruit and veg last when I actually knew what fruit and veg I needed to go with whatever else I had.bought. it has been very difficult for me to pick veg without knowing what meat was available. That's just me though.

CarolVordermansArse · 10/07/2020 13:57

I have used Morrisons throughout the restrictions because they haven't stopped people from looking for what they need to find and have let their customers use their common sense, it has worked mostly. Had one hysterical woman waving her arms and holding a hand over her mouth at the beginning while everyone else was keeping a good distance, and another idiot woman who nipped into a space that I had left while waiting my turn at the counter, and blocked the entire aisle before noticing what she had done. Other than that it has been OK.

One queue for checkout which has also been fine, no long waits, although the length of the queue had been extended by several aisles once people were out more.

I need to shop with someone so also chose Morrisons because we were allowed in together. It was a well organised store, common sense was used by staff and customers.

SomewhereEast · 10/07/2020 14:01

Our local Tesco has got rid of it all too, which I'm very happy about TBH! I felt like I just ended up spending longer than necessary in the supermarket & wandering around more than usual because I was trying to navigate the bloody one way system, which all seemed a bit counterproductive

KatherineJaneway · 10/07/2020 14:13

Popped into a local Tesco today and all arrows are gone.

Plancina · 10/07/2020 14:19

Thank goodness! Can’t wait til they take away the one way system here. It’s stupid and leads to road blocks behind dithering people. No need for one way system if everyone uses their common sense.

gardenbridge · 10/07/2020 14:46

Thank god for that

Shopaholic100 · 10/07/2020 14:57

Really hope Asda remove them too. It just meant you spent longer in the store and a more stressful experience. It’s so much better when everyone can just focus on keeping apart get their shopping and leave ASAP.

pigoons · 10/07/2020 15:07

Well in Scotland supermarket at lunchtime mobbed with little social distancing because it's all OK now as masks are mandatory ... even though most people were fiddling with them constantly and going in and out of shops lifting them on and off between times.

Will be interesting to see if cases rise despite the masks and if so what will be blamed ...
