Soup, salad, sandwiches OR retro recipes.

We are clearly all too bored with the lockdown, and have been throwing around random ideas for themed days, for menu planning.

One we thought of was soup, salad, sandwich Saturday. What would you use together?

Another was throwback Thursday - either a favourite from childhood, or a retro style dinner. Any favourites?

Just curious on what other people like to have for the above combos.
Or if you have any themed days at all?

Also, Meatless Monday, the American style Taco Tuesday (Wednesdays? Confused ) Fakeaway Friday, slow cooker Sunday?

I love the sound of them all!
They would make a good book!

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 19:48

Thanks @therealkittyfane

What would you choose?

We often have homemade soup and toasted sandwiches for tea.

Dreamersandwishers · 05/07/2020 19:53

Love the idea of throwback Thursday - chicken Kiev or chicken Myers. Scampi & chips ( basket optional); findus pancakes,, Black Forest gateau, vienetta or my mums steamed pudding.
I am so there.

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 19:58

Ooooh - Black Forest gateau @Dreamersandwishers. Haven't had that in years. I remember the Sara Lee ones though.
What would you have before that?

What are cornflake tarts @TinkersRucksack?

Any good combos @JimMaxwellantheshippingforcast?

I grew up in the ‘70’s/ ‘80s and staple meals for throwback Thursday would be things like Pork chops/boiled potatoes/home grown vegetables, Sausage & Mash/garden peas, Chicken in white wine sauce, Homemade chicken Kiev (very exotic), Goulash and rice.
Chicken in white sauce vol-au-vents were a treat.
Puddings (always had a pudding in the ‘70s/‘80s) - Homemade Rice pudding, jelly, home made Creme caramel, pineapple upside down cake with custard....
Yum.

therealkittyfane · 05/07/2020 20:01

Yes! Black Forest gateaux at parties!

AdaColeman · 05/07/2020 20:01

Retro menu ideas:
Prawn cocktail followed by coq au vin.
Chicken in a basket, or scampi in a basket.
Avocado vinaigrette followed by beef daube.

Forrin Food Friday
Gazpacho & paella
Spanish ham olives etc followed by Catalan chicken

therealkittyfane · 05/07/2020 20:02

Everything was homemade!

TinkersRucksack · 05/07/2020 20:08

Cornflake tart: shortcrust pastry, golden syrup, cornflakes. Baked in oven until pastry is cooked. Served with copious custard.

The only good thing about school dinners

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 20:08

@therealkittyfane - everything homemade sounds delicious. I wouldn't know where to start though! I was served mostly out the freezer for desserts etc, at least.

I remember those little frozen mousse pots, raspberry swirl or whatever.

@AdaColeman - YY to prawn cocktail - delicious, and yet I only ever seem to make it at Christmas time.

@TinkersRucksack - sounds interesting. Will have to see what recipes Google comes up with for those.
We used to have cornflakes or rice crispy chocolate cakes.

The soup will vary, I prefer tomato. Ds likes cauliflower cheese soup.
Jamie Oliver's ministry of food soup section is good for tasty, easy soups.
My favourite toasted sandwich is cheese and egg.
Everyone else is left to make their own

Veterinari · 05/07/2020 20:33

You forgot the jam @TinkersRucksack !
Shortcrust pastry blind baked then smeared with a layer of strawberry jam, then add cornflake/syrup mixture and bake till golden. Yum!

Also jam/lemon curd roly poly

For main course:
Findus crispy pancakes chips and beans
Fish finger sandwiches
Toad in the hole
Stew and dumplings
Pie mash and peas

Basically stodge or processed rubbish Grin

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 20:46

Love all the retro style dinners you are all coming up with Smile

Well to me something nice & light like beef wellington, goes lovely before that Black Forest gateau. Apparently Tesco’s do a gateau. May need to add one ...

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 22:44

That does sound tasty @Dreamersandwishers.

Has anyone got any thoughts for Wednesday? Stumped on that one..

Would be great to hear everyone's favourite Mexican dishes too, for Taco night.

OP posts:
roarfeckingroar · 05/07/2020 22:50

Wing it Wednesday?

Either chicken wings or you just wing it and everyone chooses something they'll eat from the freezer or cupboard ?

ChicCroissant · 05/07/2020 23:21

Pick a different decade each week for throwback Thursday - there was a really good thread on here about 70's food. 80's food like black forest gateau, nouvelle cuisine. Brilliant idea, OP.

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 05/07/2020 23:42

@roarfeckingroar Wing it Wednesday is a good one. Like a roulette on the chicken wing sauces perhaps.

Love the idea of different decades @ChicCroissant. Any possibility of a link at all to that thread please?

SisterNight · 06/07/2020 00:30

I'd do whatever you want Wednesdays and each family member could take it in turns to choose their favourite meal for everyone else to try

LakeFlyPie · 06/07/2020 00:58

Cheese and egg toastie jimmaxwell??
I told DS2 he couldn't make that the other day because cheese and egg "isn't a thing"
What's your recipe? I'll pass it on!

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 06/07/2020 07:06

@SisterNight Whatever you want Wednesday could work. DC would love that.

Since last posting, we've also thought of Wild West Wednesday, or World Wide Wednesday.
