There was quite a lot of talk at the start of this of the NHS not taking people into hospital with the virus quickly enough as well. That was pretty rubbish. With low oxygen etc.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/07/2020 18:12

In contrast with e.g, Germany who tested mild cases and treated earlier.

Nihiloxica · 06/07/2020 18:14

@Wanderings

If our much-deified NHS is the envy of the world, why have no other countries tried to copy it?
As someone who grew up without the NHS, I genuinely think it's an amazing achievement of social solidarity.

But 10 years of austerity and deliberately damaging "restructuring" left it dangerously weak in the face of a pandemic.

They had a really good pandemic plan. But then they (the Tory government) didn't implement it.

The NHS, and the population it is meant to protect, were let down.

There are serious questions to be asked about why so many health services were stopped, and the duration of those cessations.

This did not happen in other European countries we would claim as peers.

I remember at the start of lockdown someone (Lilac?) talking about the horror of living in a country where people were being left to pull out their own teeth, and that we had allowed ourselves to be reduced to pre-modern dentistry.

Those appalling standards seem to have been accepted in other services with the excuse of The Virus and it is outrageous.

"Lack of monitoring in England for those in severe phase of coronavirus could reduce survival chances"

At sat of April this is reported on...wonder if things have changed since then, hopefully. www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/06/fears-britons-self-isolating-covid-19-seek-help-too-late

And here, look it is the person to blame for not seeking help early enough. But I heard the 111 service was overwhelmed

Concerns are being raised that people isolating at home with worsening Covid-19 symptoms may not call for medical help early enough when they enter the second, more severe, phase of the virus, possibly reducing their chances of survival.

The NHS does not have a proper monitoring system for those suspected of having coronavirus, said Dr Bharat Pankhania, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of Exeter medical school.

“If a patient is developing pneumonia, it can get progressively worse very quickly and hence early admission upon the first signs of difficulty with breathing are very important,” he said.

“It is important for people recovering at home that there be a monitoring system in place too. Something that we have thus far not introduced.”

I've personally experienced the best NHS care and the worse - that could have killed me and one of my chidlren as well as the usual frustrating but generally okay service.

Same time they've saved DS from permanat damage and possible death recently even during covid when they really were under pressure in local hospital but still freindly and full of reassuance and competence.

From what I saw manageing away any problems rather than dealing with problems and learning from them or not dealing with problematic staff seems to be part of the culture.

I've seen similar with friends and family - it's a dodge the blame lose the notes game - often it's poor systems and communication rather than people and sometime culture in that local service.

It's just so variable across postcodes and servcies.

"There is a danger that people will arrive in hospital only when their symptoms are very severe, with more of a risk that they will end up in critical care and possibly die, he said.

The early symptoms of mild disease are a persistent dry cough, a raised temperature and shortness of breath. The advice to anyone with those symptoms in England is to self-isolate at home. They are not told to inform the health service

Most people recover within a week, but if their symptoms worsen or they still have a high temperature at the end of that time, the instruction is to fill in a form on the NHS 111 coronavirus website if they can – and to call NHS 111 only if they cannot do that. Depending on their answers, they may get a visit from a doctor or be admitted to hospital

Sounds pretty rubbish Sad

Orangeblossom78 · 06/07/2020 18:23

Yes it is very hit and miss- they nearly let my young relative die- she had a bleed on the brain after previous brain tumour but because her mum took her in to A&E they didn't believe or listen and told her mum she was anxious. Sad

The GP knew her history more and got in touch with her consultants but only after the mother had been wrongly reassured at A&E.

Also when she later developed lung cancer and couldn't breathe A&E told her it 'may be a pulled muscle'. Basically urgent care can miss unusual things as they don't have access to your history- especially if you present as 'young and healthy' (and possibly female? studies show they take male pain more seriously)

But some things are serious. She needed oxygen. It could be solved with access to your records online. This is where it really seems to fail, in the communication

Anyone remember the thread when people were talking about the blue lips thing?

Someone said they would show up at A&E if they had blue lips and 111 and/or paramedics refused to take them seriously.

Dementor opinion was that the correct thing to do in that circumstance was to obediently succumb to death rather than seek medical care.

That's one of the things that made me realise these were irrational monsters who had lost any perspective they ever had.

SpnBaby1967 · 06/07/2020 18:26

I needed to see my GP about my cough, GP tells me they "dont do coughs"

DONT DO COUGHS!! YOU'RE A FUCKING GP, COUGHS IS YOUR JOB!! Especially when I had a test to confirm it was The Virus causing it.

So instead they threw antibiotics and put me back on my childhood asthma plan (I'm 40 this year!).

I wonder if antibiotic resistance will be our next big issue with them just chucking them at people instead of actually seeing the patients

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 06/07/2020 18:27

I think we've been lucky with A&E - it's usually been the other services that let us down often with more access to notes but talking between services, and GP can be dire even colleagues in same department.

SpnBaby1967 · 06/07/2020 18:27

*a test to confirm it WASNT the virus

Ibake · 06/07/2020 18:29

I'm also increasingly pissed off with the D's currently rewriting history. We saw those posts, we remember what you wrote and what you accused people of but they're just denying it now and accusing us of making it up. Why on earth would we all joke about murdering grannies on here if it didn't have its origins elsewhere - it's a pretty random thing we came up with otherwise! For me, it will always be the one who was shaking and sobbing.

I truly hope that the NHS won't be untouchable after this. I want it to stay and I'd fight to keep it but I don't want it to be beyond reproach or criticism. Clinically I think it's more or less great but the layers of bureaucracy and admin drive me mad - and have been really exposed over the last few months as we've shown what we can really do when the chips are down. I would be hoping that this is a chance to reform, stop some of the red tape and redirect funds where they are most needed. Unfortunately it's going to be a brave politician who points out failures and inadequacies now that we have canonised all HCP's.
I've been saying the very same thing for a few years now. I also think that Public Health England should shoulder a lot of blame for the way that the NHS has been totally mismanaged over the years.
Orangeblossom78 · 06/07/2020 18:37

That's awful about the blue lips thing. I do remember lots of talk about turning blue etc Sad

Yes they gave me a hard time about a picnic, lots of dementing I remember it being quite horrible at the time. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3890431-To-remind-people-of-the-exercise-rules

Yep lots of "oh I don't think I ever saw that on mn" shit going around. Why were you wearing fecking sunglasses? Avoiding all covid threads? You know and I know the place was over run by people screaming murderer at anyone who went outside for more than the 5 minute half hour bloody clap
FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 19:00

Only on MN would you see the comment "Ummm a picnic?? I’m not surprised you got glared at!"
