Names for Grandparents!

ChickenDrumstick · 04/07/2020 13:25

Either your own or your DCs? Our family already has a Nanny and a Granny so looking for something different for new gps...don’t like Grandmother/Grandma/Grandfather/Grandpa/Gramps as they’re a bit old fashioned for the people in question!

What different names are in your family?

Our chose their own. It would be odd for example if there are other siblings with dc for the grandmother of one to be nanna and the same woman is called gran by another part of the family. I really think you have to let them pick as they get called it.

TheChippendenSpook · 04/07/2020 13:28

Both my parents and my husband's parents decided what they wanted to be called.

@Goingdownto because of this reason of all cousins calling grandma the same. My mil thinks she's entitled to "mama" she purposely chose it when first grandchild came along 10 years ago.

But also, it's not really weird for different sets to call grandma a different name it's quite common in cultures where paternal/maternal families are called different things. One grandchild's "farmor" would be one grandchild's "mormor" in Sweden for example.

ChickenDrumstick · 04/07/2020 13:31

They don’t know what they want to be called which is why I am asking! It’s up to them, but they say they dont like the above and what other suggestions are there out there?

Grandparents should decide what they would like to be called, not someone else, even their own DC/parents of DGC

As I have said of course they can but they are looking for ideas as they don’t like the conventional ideas. I am not choosing for them, it’s up to them, they have asked me for suggestions.

I agree with this. My father in law really wanted to be called Grandpa but his son said No and the kids call him Grandad. They have 7 grandchildren now and they all call him Grandad.

GoGold · 04/07/2020 13:49

Oma - grandma in various countries.
Pa - grandpa

Or, nanny+identifying feature (hair, pets name etc).

ChickenDrumstick · 04/07/2020 13:55

@FrugiFan as I have said they are choosing their own names but they have asked for some suggestions of options as they don’t know what they want, which is why I thought I would see what people use

TeenPlusTwenties · 04/07/2020 14:10

Remind them that if they ever want 'Best grandma' gifts or 'happy birthday nana' cards then they need to choose something mainstream.

We have Granny, Grandma and Gran.

Runnerduck34 · 04/07/2020 14:15

I had a nan and a grandma but two grandads.
My dc have two grandmas and ( did have) two grandads.
We let GP choose, DH mum was already called grandma by her nephews and nieces so obviously wanted to stick to that. Our DC was my mums first grandchild but she also wanted to be called grandma as that is what we called her mum . I thought it might be confusing so sometimes we add the town they live in to identify who we mean so grandma in leeds is coming to visit etc but often we don't bother because in context we all know who we mean

jellybeanteaparty · 04/07/2020 14:24

Grandalf - one for lord of the rings fans! But as others have said often the children adapt a name - Nanny haha being a favourite here 😀

TheGardenFairy · 04/07/2020 14:24

We have
Nanny and Gramps
Nanny and Biffo
Nana and Bampy
Grandma and Grandad
Granny and Grump
Granny and Ganka

clipclop5 · 04/07/2020 14:31

Our family have Nanny and Granda!

TheGardenFairy · 04/07/2020 14:34

Oh and my Welsh great parents were

Mamgu and Tadci
Nein and Taid

One set of my grandchildren’s great grandparents are
Amelia and Albert. Guessing they didn’t want a grandparent title ?

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 04/07/2020 14:36

My dad is Grampy and his other half is just her name, my mum is Grammy and DH's dad is Grandpa.
They chose their names (except my mum who has passed away).

Trailing1 · 04/07/2020 14:37

My kids call my mother "Naan" (pronounced like naan bread) Grin
They call their paternal grandparents by terms used in Indian culture, as per our background. So grandad is "Dada-ji" and grandma is called "dadi-ma".

Purplemist · 04/07/2020 14:38

I had a Nana and Pop. My parents were Nana and Grandad.
