What can I make with a load of porridge oats?!

Severely sleep deprived me thought it would be a great help to do my shopping online for once, but I’ve only gone and ordered 10 1kg bags of bloody porridge oats!

Other than flapjacks or oat biscuits what else can I make?!

Topping for fruit crumble?

I need ideas too as I bought a massive bag of oats as my son loves flapjacks, but apparently these oars are too big and not as good as the usual ones so I dont k ow what to with the treat of the bag as its open.

In your situation I'd probably give away the excess, if I couldn't use them all before sell by date as they're in separate bags. We have a food bank box at work.

ANZAC biscuits! www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/anzac-biscuits

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 02/07/2020 11:59

Oat milk?
Face packs? Oat baths? Oat shampoo?
Overnight oats.
Oatcakes.

They should keep for a very long time - perhaps pop them in a cloth bag and use them as cushions or pillows in the meantime.

Staffordshire oatcakes are delicious www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/mar/02/how-to-make-the-perfect-staffordshire-oatcakes

@Sewrainbow can you try pulsing the oats in a food processor a tiny bit so they’re not as big? Then flapjacks for all!

whiteblue · 02/07/2020 12:02

Flapjacks
Granola
Oaty biscuits
Add to crumble topping
Overnight oats

7ofNine · 02/07/2020 12:03

Porridge!
I eat it pretty much every day.
Cookies- oat cookies are just delicious.
Flapjacks, yes, again delicious- use soupdragon's recipe, it's the best.

Oats do keep for a very long time though.

rbe78 · 02/07/2020 12:05

Porridge?

Sorry...! But it is really good and if you all have it for brekkie you'll go through a bag in a week.

We put a couple of spoonfuls of oats into our morning smoothies.

It'll keep forever, I wouldn't worry too much...

Perfect food for feeding the ducks :)

MoxyRio · 02/07/2020 12:09

Baked oats, overnight oats, banana & oat pancakes, granola bars, oaty crumble toppings.

Donate some to a food bank or collection point for food for a Facebook group that's helping the community?

7ofNine · 02/07/2020 12:10

Oh, I do love porridge. If I only had to pick one food for the rest of my life, oats would be right up there!

LuckyAmy1986 · 02/07/2020 12:12

It won’t go off for ages you’ll get through it if you have porridge for breakfast more often

butterry · 02/07/2020 12:13

Can’t you edit your order still? Oats last for ages but 10kg is a lot to get through! You could feed ducks, birds? Give some to food banks

borntohula · 02/07/2020 12:13

You can use them as an alternative to breadcrumbs on homemade chicken nuggets, etc.

SuzieCarmichael · 02/07/2020 12:17

You can chop them up in a food processor and use instead of flour !

Also soak overnight and do overnight oats for breakfast. And yes I second the suggestion of using them as a crumble topping - you get a lovely result that’s a bit like a fruit flapjack ...

Can also use as a savoury topping for pie etc

Rumtopf · 02/07/2020 12:20

Flapjack. All the flapjack. Gooey, sticky, crispy edged flapjack.

I might be low carbing. Eat some for me?

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/07/2020 12:26

I’d keep it and have porridge for breakfast every day. It’s really good for you.

ScrambledSmegs · 02/07/2020 12:26

Porridge bread is very good and uses quite a lot of oats.

Also, if anyone in your house has dry skin (or even if they don't) oats tied in an old sock or tights make a gorgeous moisturising bath. No need to wait till your DC get chicken pox. Just remember to rinse the bath out afterwards as the residue leaves it slippery.

dun1urkin · 02/07/2020 12:30

I had an excess of oats, whizz them up in a food processor to make oat flour and make muffins.
They were so nice I actually considered getting more oats once I’d worked through the stock!!

vanillandhoney · 02/07/2020 12:55

Porridge.
Overnight oats.
Flapjacks.
Cereal bars.
Muffins.
Oatcakes.
Biscuits.
Oatmeal cookies.

This thread has inspired me to make flapjacks later!

WinWinnieTheWay · 02/07/2020 12:57

Could you donate some to a food bank?

No bake chocolate slice
Carrot cheese flapjack, great for a lunch snack

Sgtmajormummy · 02/07/2020 13:35

I have a similar problem.
Until lockdown I was eating porridge for breakfast and it’s only reliably available in “ethnic” shops here in Italy so I tend to stock up.
Now I’m doing low carb intermittent fasting 16/8, skipping breakfast, and I find myself with two drums and a cardboard box of Quaker Oats. That’s about 2kg so with 10 I’d send some to the food bank.

Nobody else likes oats so I’ve put them in a cheesecake base (like using Hobnobs) and with breadcrumbs for chicken or fish.
Flapjacks and oaty banana bread will eventually be made before my stash goes out of date. And oats just eaten cold like cereal are very comforting, no need to soak overnight. Ideal hangover food.

DM used to make amazing oaty shortcakes but she took the recipe with her to the grave and I’ve never been able to replicate it!

UnfinishedSymphon · 02/07/2020 13:36

We used to make cookies with porridge oats, apple sauce for sweetness and dried fruit...they were yummy
