Sofas with removable covers

I need new sofas for our new house but I’m pregnant and feel increasingly that I should go for what’s practical. The only place I can find is Ikea but the reviews are pretty terrible. Do you think it would be enough to keep my sofas covered with a massive throw?

We have had an ikea Vimle washable sofa for about 3 years now. Really comfy and so convenient. I would really recommend.

peachypetite · 30/06/2020 21:13

@ilovespinach which colour? Is it in the website now as reviews seem a bit iffy.

We got a dfs sofa and paid £200 for a 5 year insurance on spills etc. They come out if anything is spilt and it’s been well worth it. We were told it’s hard to get ones with washable covers as the fire safety stuff used on it makes them not able to go in the washing machine

I have an Ektorp from IKEA. It's a replacement for one that lasted 15 years. I don't know where the bad reviews came from. Everyone I know with one has been v pleased. The covers are easy to take off and wash and one of my friends has a second set in a different colour to ring the changes.

Sarjest · 30/06/2020 21:39

We’ve got an Ektorp sofa from Ikea, too. Fully washable and a second set doesn’t cost the earth, either from Ikea or many other suppliers. Not the most stylish of sofas but comfortable and practical.

ArriettyJones · 30/06/2020 21:42

I love my ektorps too. Much more practical than more expensive sofas we’ve had, and much less hassle.

Pipandmum · 30/06/2020 21:42

I have ektorp in two rentals, bought specifically in case I needed to buy replacement covers between tenants. I've had three student tenants in a row and no issues- and the covers are white! Sofas look good and are comfortable. However I think leather is also a good choice with kids.

Ostanovka · 30/06/2020 21:44

I got Ektorp after asking MN years ago! I find getting the covers back on difficult, but it is handy to be able to do. Last winter I got a big throw instead of washing the covers (I don't have a dryer) and the throw was really annoying, always sagging and dragging on the floor.

Honeywort · 30/06/2020 21:59

Have an extorp too and really pleased with it as pp have said.

But also have an elasticated sofa cover for another old sofa and this is great. I bought mine via amazon and they seem to be a thing in Spain. I think it cost around £30 and it’s a universal fit for most sofas (you buy a 2,3 or 4 seater version). It’s a good alternative to a throw - I do end up adjusting it a bit once a week or so, but when I had a normal throw I needed to refill it pretty much daily,

Ah sorry peachypetit got it wrong...we've got the Kivik in dark blue. Very happy with the sofa and the colour.....

peachypetite · 01/07/2020 04:15

That’s the colour I want. Not sure about the design of the ektorp, May check out the Kivik - is it nice and comfy?

I have IKEA Backabro, very comfortable. Bought second set of covers on eBay. There are places that make covers for IKEA furniture if you want something different (and a bit more pricey)

FollowingAmirage · 10/07/2020 02:32

We have the Soderhamn from ikea. Not the cheapest, but super comfy (wide) and has washable covers. Love it!

It does seem Ikea is the only place!

Our DFS sofa has removable covers.

SoosanCarter · 10/07/2020 06:26

Collins and Hayes make sofas with removable covers

newtb · 10/07/2020 06:44

There's a site www.furnitureforfrance.co.uk based in the UK that does sofas with washable covers.

Not too expensive

peachypetite · 10/07/2020 06:48

@cliffdiver which model?

We have two Stocksund sofas from IKEA ( a 2 seater and a 3 seater) in blue. Very comfy.

EmmaStone · 10/07/2020 08:22

We've got a Sofa Workshop sofa with removable covers (Caruso). Had it now for about 12 years, the frame and cushions are perfect, but the covers are definitely ready for replacement. However, we investigated getting new covers, and they weren't much less than the cost of a new sofa. Quite annoying, as there's nothing wrong with the sofa, but don't really want to spend £1000+ on some covers.

EmmaStone · 10/07/2020 08:23

Actually seeing the current price for Caruso, the covers must have come it at close to £2k.

goatley · 10/07/2020 08:26

Leather sofas are great as you can just wipe then down.

Mine are 11 years old and in perfect nick. Replacing them soon and going for a pale fabric instead. No young kids or pets but I'm still scared.. 😂

daysofpearlyspencer · 10/07/2020 08:30

I bought an Albany sofa from Odeon 20 years ago in cream. Have throw over it. Covers wash great but cushions and springs just starting to go. I don't think all the Ikea sofas with removable covers have springs, just cardboard base as they are self assembly. Also seen something on line called magic covers I think. They are just really stretchy covers that go over any sofa.

Mmmmycorona · 10/07/2020 08:43

I’ve got a fabric sofa with removable covers. I also have a 2 year old and one on the way. We’re going leather this time as I cannot keep a sofa clean with a small child.
