Why don't dishwashers dry plastic - and any other crucial, fascinating questions you may have!

anyone fancy a thread to ask very, very, VERY important questions?

Here's mine; Why does my dishwasher create dry glasses and plates but soaking wet tupperware? hm? hm?

My cat definitely paces and gets in my way solely to stop me doing whatever I was doing in the kitchen for fear of tripping on him and breaking my leg - the only way to save my bones is to feed him. His stare bores holes in my face at the same time. I’m absolutely mesmerising, it seems - until he gets what he wants and goes back to ignoring me.

@Quarantimespringclean

If you use rinse aid in your dishwasher the plastics will come out dry. This applies even if you are using a tablet that says you don’t need rinse aid.
Wow really. That is a life changing tip for me! I can't wait to try it as I get so fed up with drying all our plastic baby bowls and beakers.

If a recipe calls for sherry which sherry should you use? I don't cook with sherry but surely it can't be Harvey's Bristol Cream?
I remember looking this up different sherry for different dishes. (Think I used water in the end as I didn’t want a bottle as don’t drink it.)

Makes a difference on type of dish (savoury or sweet). You can use sherry vinegar

Why is that (mostly) accents are not noticeable when someone sings?

Why is that when someone has a stammer en it affects their speech but not their singing?

Why don't nail polish brushes never reach the base of the bottle?
Why do toasters have a maximum setting that's guaranteed to turn bread into ash?

Not true! New dishwasher, plenty of rinse aid. Plastics are sopping wet.
Quarantimespringclean · 01/07/2020 04:09

@HollowTalk

I found exactly the same thing last time I got a new dishwasher! It took about 6 weeks of constantly refilling the salt and rinse aid dispensers before things started coming out without water marks and properly dry. It also took a while to get the rinse aid settings set correctly. I thought I’d bought a very expensive dud and had got as far as complaining to the retailer and booking a service visit when suddenly it all settled down.

Mumdiva99 · 01/07/2020 04:19

Is this the place to boast that our dishwasher has a special button to press if you have lots of plastics in so they dry better? Does it work? I don't know because my husband usually switches on the dishwasher and despite working in IT dishwasher buttons are seemingly too complicated to learn.....

@Lonelykettleshed

Weeping Willow can't help I'm afraid. My question - why do some hairs (think chin or upper lip) go from non-existent to 6 inches long and incredibly thick in a nano-second.
This is because instead of growing out from the start it kept on growing curled up under a bit of skin. So when it does finally come out (or the fine layer of skin breaks) it's already a long thick hair.
Mawbags · 01/07/2020 04:40

@Mumdiva99
Wtf,you’re totally boasting now....a sophisticated dishwasher and a fancy husband to boot! (Mine never remembers)

Inforthelonghaul · 01/07/2020 07:42

@HollowTalk New dishwasher here too and so far it’s drying plastics really well. It even has a little button for extra drying time if there are a lot of plastics! My bugbear are the cups that come out with water sitting on top still so when you turn them right way up you splash it everywhere - now that’s annoying!

Shinygoldbauble · 01/07/2020 07:47

We brush our teeth with cold water because hot water from the tank isn't suitable for consumption.

thistimelastweek · 01/07/2020 07:53

Why is the fluff in the tumble drier always gray, no matter the colour of the wash? And is it good or bad that that stuff came out of your clothes?

CrumpetandSausage · 01/07/2020 07:56

My tumble drier fluff is definitely different coloured depending on the dominant colour of the load. Grey tinged with colour...

I wish.
Ours is a fairly new Bosch one and it doesn't even dry the tops of cups and glasses, never mind plastic. As it happens the plates are usually wet on the bottom as they stand upright, and any pans are always wet too. I always pile it all into the drainer to dry or it gets dried with a tea towel. Just think myself luck didn't have to wash it by hand and plan to get a better one next time, although this was a better one, very carefully chosen, so maybe what I mean is don't get another Bosch one.

CarolVordermansArse · 01/07/2020 08:13

lucky

Quarantimespringclean · 01/07/2020 09:31

I’m with @CrumpetandSausage. Out tumbledryer fluff definitely varies depending on the load. Sometimes it looks like those tubes of coloured sand you can buy on the Isle of White with a white layer (sheets), a blue layer (towels), followed by a pink layer (Fred school polo shirts and hoodies) etc.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/07/2020 09:42

@Mumdiva99

Snap Wink. Also a dedicated maintenance cycle & tall item cycle 😀.

EinsteinaGogo · 01/07/2020 14:20

@CarolVordermansArse - that's terrible - have you been on to Bosch?

Having seen their customer service there wasn't a lot of point. When the heating is on in the winter it is a bit better so think the outside wall stops it drying to a point, however I thought they went on outside walls for the draining. I know they now make one with a special drying setting but have never had one leave everything wet before, even the cheap Indesit that was here when we moved in was better than this.

Bosch has gone downhill a lot since the eco stuff started being made. Washing machine doesn't rinse soap out either and the frost free freezer keeps freezing up. All Bosch.

Email the ceo and complain to them. That’s not acceptable.

scissy · 01/07/2020 15:16

Are the ppl saying rinse aid doesn't work living in hard water areas? My dishwasher manual explains the different settings depending on how "hard" the water is. Luckily mine is fine with the default - I get dry plastics with rinse aid.

SimonJT · 01/07/2020 15:21

As a brown person I have only just discovered suncream as my boyfriend is white and burns sat in the chair near the window!

Why at the beach don’t we have booths that spray a fine mist of suncream?

ZaZathecat · 01/07/2020 15:33

Oh I wish Simon. They have that in Australia don't tey, or have I imagined that?

Quarantimespringclean · 01/07/2020 15:36

I agree that eco settings on dishwashers (and other appliances) are completely ineffective. They take forever and do an inferior job to mortal settings. And it’s not just eco settings, it’s new machines generally. In the last 3 years I’ve replaced my ancient Miele washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher and the new machines all perform markedly worse than the very old ones they replaced. They are all now A+++Rated but they are so much slower. I also put in less expensive machines in a rental property we own and they are pretty crap too.

And while we are on the subject - what is with modern WiFi enabled appliances? Why in gods name would I want to pay an extra 3 or 4 HUNDRED pounds for a WiFi washing machine? It’s not as if the WiFi is going to collect the laundry from upstairs, sort the whites and coloureds, check the pockets and put them in the machine. Someone still have to be there to do all that so that someone might as well just press the start button when it’s all done. And if it’s anything like a WiFi printer the connection will go down every couple of days anyway.
