Micellar Cleansing Water - load of nonsense?

TokyoSushi · 29/06/2020 16:25

I briefly caught the end of an advert the other day advertising Micellar Cleansing Water which got me thinking, perhaps it might be a good change from my usual makeup removal wipes. It claimed to do magical things, like, I don't know, easily remove makeup!

It does nothing of the sort, just like wiping expensive water on your face to no effect. Am I doing it wrong?

I use make up wipes to get rid of my make up and micellar water to cleanse my skin. I like it, it makes my skin feel clean. I wash my face with face wash in the shower in the morning and use micellar water to cleanse at night. I buy mine from sainsburys, I think it's about £3 for a big bottle.

I agree it is rubbish at removing makeup though.

HironsBirons · 29/06/2020 16:38

Mine gets every scrap of make up off no bother, including waterproof mascara and eyeliner. I use one from Sainsbury’s

Thecazelets · 29/06/2020 16:41

I use the green Garnier one every night for makeup removal - it works brilliantly. Maybe try a different brand?

Mine gets all my make up off every time its great!

sunlightflower · 29/06/2020 16:45

Really? I'm surprised, I find it takes all my make up off and is much better than wipes! I do think it's a bit drying though so not great for sensitive skin.

BubblegumFactory · 29/06/2020 16:46

DD has quite sensitive skin and uses it a lot as a make-up remover. Works well for her. The Garnier one I think she uses.

peachypetite · 29/06/2020 16:46

Wipes are terrible for your skin

torthecatlady · 29/06/2020 17:00

I use the pink Garnier one and it's really good for removing make up (and sensitive enough to use on the eyes). I used to use the Clinique make up removers but swapped to this one about 2 years ago to save money.

I use the reusable cotton pads with it as I was getting frustrated by how many wet wipes I was throwing in the bin.

reluctantbrit · 29/06/2020 17:00

I use it for removing make up but it still leaves some residue so I use a normal cream cleanser.

I hate the sticky feel if I just use the water,

Saying that, normal make up remover works as well.

sadpapercourtesan · 29/06/2020 17:01

Why are wipes terrible for your skin?

milienhaus · 29/06/2020 17:02

I use the pink Garnier one and it gets everything off! Which one did you try?

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 29/06/2020 17:05

Wipes are quite abrasive, & are shockingly bad for the environment.

edwinbear · 29/06/2020 17:05

I still use eye make up remover, but then go over my whole face with micellar water which gets the last bit off, as well as the general muck on my face.

TokyoSushi · 29/06/2020 17:07

Oh! It's the pink garnier one! I like the idea and the feel of it, but it didn't really remove my mascara or eyeliner.

I'll give it another whirl tonight and report back - bet you're all on the edge of your seats! Grin

Wipes generally contain alcohol, which is very drying, as one of the main ingredients, plus various surfactants and things which can be irritating. Plus they aren’t actually that great at removing make up or sebum, and basically just spread it around. And they are pretty bad for the environment.

Micellar water can be a good alternative, but IMP nothing is as good as a proper wash with a cleanser and a flannel.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 29/06/2020 17:09

IMO not IMP!

torthecatlady · 29/06/2020 17:11

@TokyoSushi I find if I soak a make up pad with it and hold it on the eye area for a few seconds, then gently wipe away, it removes it.

TipseyTorvey · 29/06/2020 17:33

I tried it and thought it was okay but then I got serious about skincare and now use rose hip oil to take off the make up , then a gentle non foaming face cleanser with a flannel in cool water. Much better for my skin. But every one's skin differs so you might need a bit of trial and error. Loads of people swear by eve lom cream cleanser but I hated it. Found it smeary and claggy.

PatMullins · 29/06/2020 17:35

The charcoal biore one saved my skin ✨

Roominmyhouse · 29/06/2020 17:39

I’ve got the Sainsbury’s own brand one, it’s £2 for a big bottle and I prefer it to others I’ve tried. I’ve got reusable cotton pads too so no more wipes for me? They are terrible for the environment.

SpiderStan · 29/06/2020 17:42

Mine works wonders! I rarely use face wipes now. I use the Garnier oil-based one (orange) because I have dry skin and it really cuts into waterproof make up and leaves my skin feeling amazing. I usually try to wash my make up off first and get the remainder off with the micellar water.

doadeer · 29/06/2020 17:46

No way for me it leaves a nasty film on my skin but also makes it feel tight as it has so much alcohol in.

I cleanse twice, first with a gel or milk then a Balm cleanser with a flannel or muslin.

Once you do it like this you won't go back!

Lottapianos · 29/06/2020 17:50

It's good for shifting heavy eye make up or lipstick, but it's not a cleanser and shouldn't be used to clean your whole face, or at least not without using a proper cleanser and flannel after. And please ditch the wipes! Use a (cheap) cleanser that your skin gets on with, remove with a warm wet flannel. You'll never look back!

mencken · 29/06/2020 18:00

never heard of it so looked it up - seems it is water and surfactants. Those are chemicals that allow things like water and oil to mix, and are found in most cleaning agents. Soap, washing up liquid, etc etc.

my chemistry is a bit rusty so I'll need to do some more reading!

Roselilly36 · 29/06/2020 18:19

Horrible stuff, makes me skin really sticky.
