Moral dilemma. Wwyd?

Keeping it vague and brief.

Someone advertised something on a selling group for £20. I knew it was worth much more so snapped it up. I've now had many offers to buy the item for £150.

Should I offer the original seller some more money?

Yes

kingkuta · 26/06/2020 07:56

Why would you? You paid the price that they wanted for it, seems ridiculous to then go back and pay more.

Ickabog · 26/06/2020 07:57

I wouldn't. You paid the price they asked.

You're not responsible for their lack of research into the value of the item. If they had done some research they would have seen the actual value, and could have sold it for more.

RedCatBlueCat · 26/06/2020 07:57

Nope. They didnt research properly. They are happy. You are happy. Seems like a perfect solution.

TinySleepThief · 26/06/2020 07:57

Unless there was something stopping the seller researching how much the item was worth then why would you offer them more money?

Givemestrengthorgin · 26/06/2020 07:59

No, you have to take these small wins in life!

Pipandmum · 26/06/2020 07:59

No. Unless they are a friend of yours. Isn't this why people trawl through boot sales and the like?

InDubiousBattle · 26/06/2020 08:00

No, I don't see anything morally wrong in what you did.

Besom · 26/06/2020 08:02

Are they a friend?

healththrowawayx · 26/06/2020 08:02

No

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/06/2020 08:03

No

LaughingDonkey · 26/06/2020 08:03

No, it seems they weren't bothered with a research or wanted to get rid of the item asap no matter what cost, hence the price. If it would be elderly person selling piece of technology, then - yes, I would think of giving back some of the money.

It really depends on the situation and people involved...

Alexindiamondarmour · 26/06/2020 08:03

Can you give a few more details OP?
Did you get the offers of 150 based on the seller’s original listing? (So for instance, you haven’t taken time or photos to list it again?)
For example, they saw you bought it cheaply and have privately messaged you asking to buy it for more money?

youcancallmequeenE · 26/06/2020 08:03

No. They sold it at a price they were happy with. What you do with it after is up to you. They could've asked for more if they wanted to

Ragwort · 26/06/2020 08:03

Do you know the person who originally sold the item? If you do, it would be a nice gesture.

If you don't know them, maybe give some money to your favourite charity?

I manage a charity shop and it is impossible to research every single product carefully, I have had customers kindly point out to me that something is worth a lot more than we've priced it at, I think that is a really generous thing to do. No doubt we've also had people snap up some real bargains - that's the nature of running a charity shop Smile.

Helbelle17 · 26/06/2020 08:04

No. I sold something on Facebook for far less than it was worth. I just needed it gone. I suspect the person who bought it from me was going to sell it on for more, and that was fine with me.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 26/06/2020 08:05

If the original seller was a charity, then yes. Otherwise, no.

AnnaSW1 · 26/06/2020 08:07

No

employeewoes · 26/06/2020 08:08

Person was not a friend, not elderly or vulnerable. Nothing stopping them researching. They clearly just don't know what the item is. E.g if it were a piece of jewelry they didn't know it was designer.

employeewoes · 26/06/2020 08:08

Not a charity. Individual seller off Facebook.

I put up a new listing.

pictish · 26/06/2020 08:09

No.

Alexindiamondarmour · 26/06/2020 08:09

Ok in that case I think you’re in the clear!

Ickabog · 26/06/2020 08:10

Nothing stopping them researching.

You're not responsible for their lack of research. There's no need to offer them any extra money, they chose to list at that price. If you hadn't bought it someone else would, and they'd more than likely sell it on as well.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 26/06/2020 08:11

Absolutely not. You bought it for a price they were happy with.

employeewoes · 26/06/2020 08:12

I just feel a bit mean! Maybe I'm a softy!
