Yes and yes!

PinkSubscriber · 25/06/2020 21:15

Sorry this was the 80’s not 70’s and it was my mum giving it to my little bro

My mum gave it to me for allergies and it gave me hallucinations. Yes 1970s

Babysharkdoodoodood · 25/06/2020 21:17

I gave it to my boys when we flew. Stopped them vomiting and the side effect was blissful peace and quiet. This was in the 90's.

DramaAlpaca · 25/06/2020 21:17

You could buy it from the chemist and you had to sign a book when you bought it.

I was a child in the 70s and I remember the taste (it was delicious!) so I must have been given it, but I've no idea if i was given it to make me sleep. Knowing my mother, I don't think she'd have done that.

Bazookapie · 25/06/2020 21:18

I had 2 children in the 70s and never gave them Phenergan, and wasn’t aware of anyone who did. They may well have done and just not mentioned it I guess!

endofthelinefinally · 25/06/2020 21:18

Phenergan.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 25/06/2020 21:19

My mum gave it to me once when we went on a coach journey from Yorkshire to the Isle of Wight. I slept the whole way there so the coach ride was lovely and easy. But I was bouncing off the walls with hours and hours of extra sleep.
She didn’t give me it again.

Bluewavescrashing · 25/06/2020 21:19

I might try it as Fexafenadine on prescription has not been the magic bullet I anticipated 😭

endofthelinefinally · 25/06/2020 21:20

I think it was a pretty strong drug to give to children tbh.

IRememberSoIDo · 25/06/2020 21:20

My mum gave it to me and I had the counter reaction and was high as a kite 😂😂.

amylou8 · 25/06/2020 21:20

Yes, I was stoned on a regular basis in the late 70s according to my mum 😂

Pugsrus · 25/06/2020 21:22

I think I was given it a lot as a child ,,when she had friends over or her boyfriend,so I’m just wondering if everyone else had it as well .

There used to be something called Medised up until the early 90's, which I think contained phenergan. My HV actually advised me to give some to my non-sleeping first born.

Why do you want to know about infant sedatives?

thereinmadnesslies · 25/06/2020 21:24

Medised was available in 2006. My health visitor advised me to try it for my non sleeper.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/06/2020 21:24

You can still buy it from the chemist or at least a few years ago you could. I still have a packet in my bedside drawer to take when working night shifts.

Some chemists won’t sell it.....Tesco normally don’t care.

Smellbellina · 25/06/2020 21:24

My DS was drugging her kids to sleep in the 00’s

DramaAlpaca · 25/06/2020 21:25

I remember Medised too. It was very handy in the 90s when my DC got chickenpox, it certainly helped them sleep. It wasn't for under ones, if I remember right.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/06/2020 21:25

I’ve never given it to Dd though!

HandsOffMyRights · 25/06/2020 21:26

Medised was still about in 2006 when mine were born.

I bought Phenergan Night Time last week from Tesco. It helped me sleep, but my second try had no impact.

Clawdy · 25/06/2020 21:27

Definitely remember friends recommending it to help kids sleep, in the late seventies. It was over-the-counter at Boots, and I used it when our toddler was waking several times a night, and it did work. One spoonful two nights running, and he slept through both nights. It broke the waking cycle, he slept through from then on, and I never used it after that. Looking back, it sounds awful, I know, but one friend who told me to try it was a midwife!

Besom · 25/06/2020 21:27

I've not heard of it and don't think I was ever given it.

MartySouth · 25/06/2020 21:27

Yes I remember it well in the 60s/70s. I was a poor sleeper and my mum gave it to me. I still remember the taste.

I'm going to controversially say that I don't think it's such an awful thing though. With my children I did the whole attachment parenting thing and let them find their own sleep patterns etc etc. but I was constantly knackered and unable to function well at work or as a partner (or parent).

Parents need to sleep at night. All adults need to sleep at night in order to stay mentally and physically well and to maintain their relationships and be economically productive.

It might make you (temporarily) feel good to tell yourself or other parents that you are ok going along with what the sleep patterns your young child chooses to follow but the human body and adult human society just is not compatible.

My DCS are now 19 and 24 and it now seems utter madness to me that women gave in and still give in to sleep torture. Very few men do this.
