Did you have a child in the 1970s ,would it of been common practice to regularly give it your child/ baby to make them sleep .

Yep, late 70s early 80s child here. GP prescribed it for my mum precisely to get me to sleep.

It did bugger all...probably because my bedtime drink was 'milk and a dash'...a cup of warm milk with half a teaspoon of instant coffee and sugar!

BreathlessCommotion · 25/06/2020 21:31

I still give it to my dd (age 7) because she gets really bad travel sickness and it is the only thing that helps (we've tried every other travel sickness medicine.)

She can't go more than 30 mins in a car or train without it, otherwise she pukes, a lot.

lovelilies · 25/06/2020 21:31

You can still buy it. I use it when I can't sleep. I also used it for my kids when we flew to Australia Grin

I used it for my son when we went to visit the in-laws. It was an eight hour drive and I give him a dose after an hour, then another one to make him sleep after he'd had his tea.

lachy · 25/06/2020 21:32

I don't think my mum used phenergan on me, but I definitely used to have a tot of brandy in my bedtime bottle.

CurlsandCurves · 25/06/2020 21:34

I was a terrible sleeper so my mum would give me phenergan. She’d make sure she never went to the same chemist twice so they wouldn’t cotton on how much she was getting through!

howtotellsomeone · 25/06/2020 21:38

Dsis was given it back in 2008 or so - severe autism and they thought would help her sleep . Started having seizures in her sleep - never had it again .

Mylittlepony374 · 25/06/2020 21:41

Gave it to my daughter in 2019 for long haul flight. She was high as a kite then vomited all over the plane. Bottles still in my cupboard.

Starisnotanumber · 25/06/2020 21:43

Still available in lloyds pharmacy I got some in sainsburys a few weeks ago.
Helps me sleep when bad hay-fever kicks in.

dementedpixie · 25/06/2020 21:43

Medised didn't contain phenergan but did contain a different sedating antihistamine

picklemewalnuts · 25/06/2020 21:45

Late 90's there was a bit of a black market in it in Singapore. The Ozzies could get it and/or Valergan when they went home, and they'd bring it back for the rest of us. Mainly to manage long haul flights.

GeneralEyes · 25/06/2020 21:46

I used to give it to both my girls in the 1990s. My paediatrician MIL recommended it.

MissDollyMix · 25/06/2020 21:47

Oh yes! I’m a child of the 80s and I remember my mum had a trusty bottle of this! I did actually google if it was still available when DD was little Blush she was such a shocking sleeper! It isn’t by the way...

Rowanberries · 25/06/2020 21:48

Dm was prescribed it for me in the early 80s. I was a terrible sleeper.

I was told to use it for my children by the dr as they were also terrible sleepers. Even after the rules changed he told me to lie to the pharmacist and use it anyway. Shock

MissDollyMix · 25/06/2020 21:49

Oh I stand corrected! Seems it is still available! I was obviously not looking in the right place!

OohKittens · 25/06/2020 21:51

My first child was prescribed this 2005 from the hospital to stop him.itching his eczema. He had been wet wrapped day and night from 3mnths old (do people still wet wrap for eczema?)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2020 21:52

My mother was prescribed it in the 80s to give to me to make me sleep because she had PND.

I worked in pharmacy in the early 2000s and it was still prescribed then to give to children eg on long haul flights - presumably for 'travel sickness' ?

PulpHorn · 25/06/2020 21:52

Me and my sibling were given it for travel in the 90s, I had some for a long haul flight a few years ago. My psychiatrist friend said it's routinely used for sedation in hospital now

Starisnotanumber · 25/06/2020 21:52

8.00 for 56 25mg tablets from lloyds pharmacy

Duckfinger · 25/06/2020 21:54

Never heard of phenergan, but I did used to give my DS medised (similar but different it appears) in 2006/07 he was a terrible sleeper and the only time I ever got a full night's sleep until he was 3 was when he had a cold that warranted a dose of medised.

dementedpixie · 25/06/2020 21:55

Medised got changed to age 6+ at one point before being discontinued

FuturePerfect · 25/06/2020 21:56

Mmm tasted like Pimms!

MitziK · 25/06/2020 21:56

Piriton was also used for the same reason.

Still is, unofficially.

stardance · 25/06/2020 21:57

I was born in the 80s and I think this is probably what I was given before school trips because I had awful travel sickness and it was much worse on a coach.

gotothecooler · 25/06/2020 21:59

We had it on prescription in the early 2000's for DD who suffered badly from travel sickness - it knocked her out so there was no point giving it to her so we could go for a day out 🙄
