Dead animal in pool

Poolproblems · 25/06/2020 15:39

We have a 15ft above ground pool in our garden (in UK). For various reasons the pool hasn't been used since last year. It can't be seen from the house due to garden layout and for various MH reasons I've not been in the garden until the last week or so.

At some point the cover has come off the pool which is now half full of stagnant water, and a dead animal (we think badger). I called the council but they are unable to remove it, Rentokil only remove animals from inside. The only company I can find want £450, and can't guarantee removal. Which I will have to pay unless I can find an alternative although it is twice what the pool cost!

Do I just need to suck it up?

Poolproblems. Give yourself a break. An accident has happened and you are trying to rectify it. Pools take a lot of maintenance, that at the moment is too much for you to take on. That’s okay, we all have times that things are too much for us. Get rid of the pool entirely and then don’t give it a moments more thought. Your children are not missing out, it’s just one of those things. Take care.

Scrowy · 25/06/2020 21:24

It won’t be a badger. I don’t think a badger could get into that pool if it is the same as the one in the pic. It will be a fox or a cat

Badgers can climb. Why do people keep saying they can't?

SirVixofVixHall · 25/06/2020 22:40

Yes they can climb up fences, but not climb the smooth and slippery pool sides. It will be an animal that can jump up onto it, who then sadly fell straight into the water.

How big are we talking? I'm quite small and I think even I could fish out a badger

Mangofandangoo · 25/06/2020 22:44

Also you need to consider what you will do with it when you get it out

GreyShadow · 25/06/2020 22:45

If the kids don't want the pool there are plenty that do! Why not advertise for free or minimal price on Facebook and they can deal with draining it and the dead animal?

backinthebox · 25/06/2020 22:55

QualityFeet ”There are huge areas of land by me with no houses for miles and miles and miles” Nope. You cannot just dump a rotting corpse just because there isn’t a house where you are dumping it. All land belongs to someone. It is still flytipping. If we went along with what you are suggesting, people could just drop a dead cow off in the Lake District because it is wild there and the cow is dead. And you know that would be wrong.

gotothecooler · 25/06/2020 22:58

I'm going to take a stab in the dark at no takers.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 25/06/2020 23:01

I’ll come and do it for £200 😂

ItsInTheShed · 25/06/2020 23:05

Blimey! I think it needs to go ASAP op

Rats! They will be all over it in the warmer weather

The water will smell vile it will be a while before the smell goes, in the meantime, the corpse will attract the rats. This is how disease spreads. Environmental health? Could they help here?

SerendipitySunshine · 25/06/2020 23:06

Are you able to go in the garden? If not, I'd remove the pool anyway as there are risks to kids (or even adults) swimming unattended, particularly as you say you can't see it from the house.

SerendipitySunshine · 25/06/2020 23:08

Also, and sorry to say it, but it is really going to smell bad so don't drain the water over your garden, or leave the dead thing there waiting for disposal.

TokyoSushi · 25/06/2020 23:11

I am so overinvested in this thread!

Minniee · 25/06/2020 23:15

If you post a photo of the pool we could make genuine suggestions? With cover and water depth (dead animal not needed)

FizzyPink · 25/06/2020 23:16

Are you sure we can’t have a photo?! I’m still struggling to work out how the men from the council couldn’t fish it out if it’s the size of a badger

cretelover · 25/06/2020 23:24

Jeez OP hope you get it sorted. Interested to see what the animal is.

Nixen · 25/06/2020 23:25

I’m weak at the idea that someone on a Facebook buy and sell group is going to fish out a rotten animal and bail out mouldy corpse water just to get a free swimming pool (which they’ll then presumably bleach a hundred times?). If anyone takes you up on that offer, I think you’ve found your friendly neighbourhood serial killer

thewisp · 25/06/2020 23:41

Minimal price, for a pool full of stagnant dead badger soup? They would have to drain it onto OP's grass, as a pool that size full of water might pose a problem for transporting Grin

lockdownrainbow · 25/06/2020 23:46

Hi op
Sorry for all the unhelpful comments!!
I hope you get it sorted
I would get rid of the pool

Regularsizedrudy · 25/06/2020 23:49

I think there have been slightly rude responses on this thread because op has basically said -

-dead animal in pool
-I can’t move it
-I don’t want to pay to get it moved
-???

Yes it’s not ops fault but it is her problem now. Just pay for it and be glad anyone is willing to accept such a grotty job

Excitedforxmas · 25/06/2020 23:52

I’d have to blow up the pool with dynamite

BertieBotts · 25/06/2020 23:57

What, and end up with dead, rotted, bloated, exploded corpse all over the neighbourhood? I don't think you're thinking about this clearly :o

Ahem.

At least the £200 quote isn't that bad. If it's been there months then a week really isn't going to make much difference, maybe just put the cover over the top??

managedmis · 26/06/2020 03:03

Er, wait a sec, why the frig has no-one asked : who filled up the pool?

OP said she emptied it in Sept Hmm

Did Bodger the Badger fill it?

managedmis · 26/06/2020 03:04

There is nae fucking chance it's a badger if two burly young men can't sort it

1forAll74 · 26/06/2020 03:49

Do you live in an area. where there are lots of menfolk ( it's a mans job ha ha ) as there just might be a guy who can do it for you, and also drain the pool for you. I live in a village area, and there are lots of men who do outdoor work, and could do something like this, and would have some suitable equipment to use for the job.

It's a shame it isn't a cat stuck up a tree, as then a lovely fireman would come and help with things. !
