Will they let us in to Wales? And what do we do if they don't ?

Long story short, parents are in Wales haven't seen them since Christmas. We have three young children. Both of us are working full time from home. Like many we are exhausted and would love something to look forward too. Due on holiday for two weeks late July and would love to visit my parents. Everything I read suggests that even if we are allowed into Wales we may not be allowed to mix with another family (ie my parents) or stay with them.

Do you think this might change ? Any thoughts on back up ? Holiday cottages appear to be gone or going quickly and I'd hate to book one and then be allowed into Wales. Being honest the idea of spending money on a holiday cottage with the (mostly lovely) people I have been stuck with for 3 months and without their normal toys doesn't fill be with any joy really, but then nor does staying at home ? Any ideas ?

There's nothing stopping you entering wales via the new bridge.

cyffredinol · 24/06/2020 21:30

Who is going to stop you entering Wales?

killerofmen · 24/06/2020 21:46

The first minister has announced that if the r rate continues to lower they will ease travel restrictions. I would expect you to be able to visit Wales in late July.

The scientific advice may be against staying with other households but you are responsible for evaluating the risk.

Helocariad · 24/06/2020 22:58

Police do fine people and escort them back to the English border, at least where I live in rural Wales. Though I think this may change mid July if R numbers continue to fall.

Runkle · 24/06/2020 23:09

Yes, you'll be stopped and sent back by border patrol. After 24 hours in an interrogation room under a bright spotlight.

killerofmen · 24/06/2020 23:21

I think Runkle is joking but at times like these I can't be 100% sure.

PogoBob · 24/06/2020 23:21

Police are stopping people in Wales, or at least in the tourist / coastal areas, and instructing them to go home. However the 5 mile limit is due for review in a couple of weeks so you will hopefully be ok

Barryisland · 25/06/2020 00:11

Wales is closed to tourists. 5 mile rule applies to those living there. People ARE getting accompanied back to England and ARE being fined for crossing the border.

MinnieMountain · 25/06/2020 07:09

Most holiday companies are letting you cancel for free if you can't visit due to Corona.

We've got a cottage booked in Pembrokeshire for late August. I've just booked one for another week as we can't visit family there as planned (even if the rules change, DF's DP is shielding).

GalesThisMorning · 25/06/2020 07:13

In 2 weeks we will, hopefully, be allowed to travel and to open up for tourists. I can't see us being allowed to have people stay over but air bnbs may go ahead. What do you mean by mixing? We're already allowed to meet up with another household outside so you will be able to do that.

North wales has particularly high infection rates at the moment due to the outbreak in Anglesey so who knows...

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/06/2020 07:38

i wouldnt do anything.
if you dont want a holiday cottage,
just assume that in a few weeks restrictions might have lessened and you may be allowed to stay with parents, if that is what you want?

DarrellMakepeace · 25/06/2020 07:45

I've driven to Wales twice in the past two weeks, over the old and new bridges. It was hairy for a moment both times but I put my foot down as I passed the sniper towers they have put up where the toll booths used to be and fortunately sustained only cosmetic damage to the bodywork of my car.

I covered up my registration for good measure too.

Actually I didn't do either of these things but did have an enjoyable drive over the border without a care in the world.

OohKittens · 25/06/2020 07:47

Police have been stopping people entering Pembrokeshire.

Northernsoullover · 25/06/2020 07:47

I'd be almost 100% confident we will be open.

Purplephonecover · 25/06/2020 07:56

If travel restrictions are lowered into wales then I think a cottage/holiday let near to them let is your only option, take toys and food with you?

rookiemere · 25/06/2020 08:02

Actually 24 hrs in an interrogation room sounds like a great night out

KaTetof19 · 25/06/2020 08:08

We're expecting the 5 mile rule to be lifted on 6th July but not for restrictions on staying with families to ease quite as early.

Tourist places have been told they can start taking bookings from 14th July (I think, don't quote me on that) so I think that's your best bet for visiting if you want to see your parents on a daily basis but not run the risk of them being reported for having family stay over...although how seriously anyone will take that by then is dubious unless there's 30 of you having a party!

Angelonia · 25/06/2020 08:11

Wales is expecting to open up to tourists on 13 July. The final decision will be made on 9 July.

Dyrne · 25/06/2020 08:12

I’m not sure why people are being shitty and taking the piss.

It’s a reasonable question given the news stories of people being fined and escorted back to the border by police.

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/06/2020 08:13

We are going on Saturday to collect dd1 from uni. Hoping that moving house Is enough if we get stopped

Helocariad · 25/06/2020 08:24

@TheDrsDocMartens you should be fine, as essential journeys into Wales are allowed. The uni in my Welsh county has allocated a few weeks' window for parents to collect their student offspring & students to come back and clear out their rooms.

notso · 25/06/2020 08:27

There's loads of people coming into Wales. We're in Wales and for the last couple of weekends my parents friends have had their daughter and her family visit for the day. My SIL and the kids are over the border and have been over here to visit throughout lockdown.
However a friends ex was turned back when he tried to pick up their children, and my husband was stopped and checked on the coast road his way to work.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 25/06/2020 08:34

We are booked to go to Hay on Wye. Cottage is on the English side. Hoping we are not going to have a nightmare getting there and around the area..

Horsemad · 25/06/2020 08:50

Does anyone know if the police are stopping/checking on the A55 near the Queensferry end at all?

MrsMcCarthysFamousScones · 25/06/2020 09:50

Who is going to stop you entering Wales?

The local police are very active in DM area constantly sending people back over the border at the moment.

Does anyone know if the police are stopping/checking on the A55 near the Queensferry end at all?
