Will they let us in to Wales? And what do we do if they don't ?

Long story short, parents are in Wales haven't seen them since Christmas. We have three young children. Both of us are working full time from home. Like many we are exhausted and would love something to look forward too. Due on holiday for two weeks late July and would love to visit my parents. Everything I read suggests that even if we are allowed into Wales we may not be allowed to mix with another family (ie my parents) or stay with them.

Do you think this might change ? Any thoughts on back up ? Holiday cottages appear to be gone or going quickly and I'd hate to book one and then be allowed into Wales. Being honest the idea of spending money on a holiday cottage with the (mostly lovely) people I have been stuck with for 3 months and without their normal toys doesn't fill be with any joy really, but then nor does staying at home ? Any ideas ?

I usually drive down through Wales but we are sticking to England otherwise we go through more touristy areas which may cause problems.
Also usually stay overnight but doing it in one go as no hotels yet 😬
Two drivers/10 hours 😫

Likewise I don't know why people are being sarcastic about what is a perfectly fair question. Am in a very similar situation to the OP. Parents in Cardiff, last saw them just before Christmas. They're mid 80s and it would stress them out massively if I got stopped by the police trying to get to them. The lack of clarity on when we will be able to travel is very distressing but it isn't worth putting my parents through the stress of just assuming that it will be ok and then getting stopped.

Wales is likely to open for tourists on the 13th-
Not sure about staying in people’s houses though.

I’m welsh but living in England. My parents have driven to see me several times but they live just a few miles from the border (never been stopped or seen anyone get stopped- this is on the a55). I want to go Anglesey in August but watching carefully due to the outbreak there. Although most of Wales will reopen i wouldn’t be surprised if Anglesey remains closed for now, sadly.

KaTetof19 · 25/06/2020 11:16

@Horsemad you might find the North Wales Police more active on road checks because there have been local large outbreaks.

Snowdonia is still closed too so they're trying to stop people before they get too far in and try to use non-existant facilities etc.

Devlesko · 25/06/2020 11:17

You can go in July, we are waiting to go too.
They have control stopping you entering at Shropshire, I know this much.

Frazzled2207 · 25/06/2020 11:18

@horsemad
They might have threatened to do so but my parents live near queensferry and have crossed the border several times (DD has regular hospital appointments in Chester) and they have never been stopped or seen anyone get stopped. Not saying it’s a good idea to cross right now though!

Frazzled2207 · 25/06/2020 11:19

When I say DD I meant dad!

Horsemad · 25/06/2020 11:45

Thanks all, I thought North Wales Police would be extra hot on checks. I will keep fingers crossed for July. 🙂
My sister lives in Wales but works in England. She's a key worker and has a letter from her employer to help should she get stuck!

canyon2000 · 25/06/2020 11:52

My daughter drove to Swansea last Saturday and came back yesterday across the Severn Bridge. She didn't see any police on either journey, or at all during her stay.

MushroomTree · 25/06/2020 13:23

I drove from Hampshire to Wales Tuesday evening. Didn't see a single police car, let alone get stopped. In fact it was blissful because there was barely anyone on the road. I'm driving back tomorrow morning and expect it will be the same.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/06/2020 13:35

My d's took his younger brothers to holyhead 5 weeks ago to meet their dad. He was stopped twice leaving but they let him on his way once he told them what he was doing so they were obviously stopping people at back then

Bmidreams · 25/06/2020 18:15

Is not having people stay over advisory or in law? What's the penalty?

killerofmen · 25/06/2020 20:47

"Is not having people stay over advisory or in law? What's the penalty?*

My understanding of the legislation is that it's you contravene the law if you go into someone's household without good reason. The fine is £60.

HPLikecraft · 25/06/2020 21:02

I have been between south Wales and Bristol (via new Severn bridge) twice in the last wee
k. Today there were lots of police around, but not stopping anyone. M4 was quite busy. A week ago no police and much quieter.

PhoneLock · 25/06/2020 21:03

We are planning to go to our own place in Wales on the 6th July. However, I'm still a little unsure if that is OK or not.

frocksmock · 25/06/2020 21:08

Police are routinely sending people back to England in my (touristy) bit of Wales, and my ex has been stopped twice now coming to collect the children. I think it depends where you're going

glassbrightly · 25/06/2020 21:17

Thanks guys. I'm not reading the comments as being sarcy about my question more about that odd situation we are all in !

I genuinely can't call it. DPs are in far west in a pretty touristy area and we are not inconspicuous, we have three small kids so the car is rammed. I think it will open up but I think the guidance may still be not to stay over night.

I feel like we should want to see them so much that we just book and visit in the day, but this seems ridiculous as kids won't socially distance, and makes me feel really sad at the idea of not staying (and honestly I feel very selfish but the idea of cooking and cleaning and sleeping in an inevitability uncomfortable holiday cottage bed isn't filling me with joy).

Should be ok @phonelock

From gov.wales:

Rates of coronavirus are falling across Wales and Ministers have indicated the requirement to stay local will be lifted on 6 July, if the conditions allow it.

PhoneLock · 25/06/2020 22:36

@Quotekillerofmen

Thanks. That's what I thought but it's good to know that somebody else thinks the same way.

maddy68 · 25/06/2020 22:38

You can get I do Wales. I go every day to work and back. Never been stopped yet

justasking111 · 25/06/2020 22:38

This week we have been on the beaches, met people from Birmingham, Staffordshire, Liverpool, Japan, they never came across any police at all, I was stopped once the other week on a Sunday but week days so many people going back and forth for work there are not that many police so coverage is scant.

I think you will be ok by mid July to be honest. Welsh are not supposed to go to England but they are to visit family.
