How bad does your hay fever get?

WingBingo · 24/06/2020 13:19

DH is currently in bed because his hay fever is so bad.

I am wfh with 2 young dc. MIL lives in the annexe so she is helping.

I don’t suffer from hay fever so I can’t relate.

Is it really bad enough to relegate you to your bed? He’s even wearing the dressing gown of doom despite the heat.

I want to be sympathetic, please tell me I should be.

Mine is infuriating .. I want to take my eyes out and wash them ...and the sneezing.,, one after another... drives me insane. But still wfh with a baby and a toddler!

mynameiscalypso · 24/06/2020 13:22

Mine is really shit - basically makes me feel like I have the flu the whole time - but I just drug myself up and get on with it. I don't see that taking to bed will help hugely!

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 24/06/2020 13:22

Has he taken any medication? Perhaps its made him drowsy?

You sure its hayfever?

I think it can make you feel pretty miserable but if its got to the stage he cant get out of bed he needs to see his GP or Pharmacist as there may be more meds he can take.

I am horrendous this year it is so bad
Itching my hands and feet palms

My face
My head
I have hives everywhere throughout the day

My eyes hurt

I have to take antihistamines to stop it and they don't even work well

My nose hurts

But I'm
Not in bed!!

PositiveLife · 24/06/2020 13:25

Mine is dreadful. I want to rip my eyes out at times. I don't generally go to bed but some antihistamines have that effect on me (even the non drowsy ones sometimes make me drowsy). I have to be careful which I take

AgeLikeWine · 24/06/2020 13:32

My hay fever would be horrendous without antihistamines. I take Loatadine every morning from early May until August. At the peak of the grass pollen season, ie now, I keep the windows closed, avoid grassy areas, don’t drive with the roof down and often take two antihistamines a day.

WingBingo · 24/06/2020 13:34

He went to see the pharmacist this morning and got some drugs.

He’s watching films in bed. I’m working my socks off for the NHS, house is a tip, kids are running riot and he is in bed.

MIL idolises him so she makes me feel like I am awful for complaining. Just trying to get some perspective!

This year has been the worst for many years for me. I’m taking multiple tablets each day. I’m showering frequently and washing my face but the itching and sneezing are really getting me down. Having something to do takes my mind off it a bit, or at least until I next need to blow my nose, which mostly happens every few seconds. But I am up and doing. I’ve hardly slept in weeks because laying down makes it worse for me. I can’t breathe.

sqirrelfriends · 24/06/2020 13:41

Mines been really bad this year, but nowhere near as bad as some of you are.

I usually only have symptoms a couple of days a year. This year it's started in April and my eyes will randomly start streaming and are so itchy all the time. I honestly feel like scratching my eyeballs it gets so bad.

romdowa · 24/06/2020 13:46

I get so bad that I get fluid on my ears which gives me vertigo. If I take an antihistamine then they knock me out and I sleep for hours.

Justgivemesomepeace · 24/06/2020 13:50

Mine used to be terrible. I could've ripped my eyes out sometimes. My nose was a scabby mess and bled through so much blowing and was constantly blocked. Antihistamines just didnt work. My asthma would get really bad and 'Id end up on steroids every year. Windows had to be kept closed and I had to stay in as much as possible.
I can imagine spending a day in bed because antihistamines made me feel awful. You get a fuzzy brain like when you have a cold and are just so exhausted and miserable. What helped me was getting preganant! Ever since i had dd my hayfever has got soooo much better. Controlled with eye drops and nasal spray. Tell him to have a baby. It sorted mine out.

JustC · 24/06/2020 13:50

Does I want to peal my whole face off sound horrid?! But can't say I've taken to bed with it. My energy level is not affected in any way. Just my patience as I'm in such constant discomfort I want to kill anyone who ticks me off.

WingBingo · 24/06/2020 13:52

Hmm maybe I’ll be more sympathetic whilst he is suffering so much.

Oopsy41 · 24/06/2020 13:54

Mine was probably the worst it's ever been yesterday and I could have very easily spent the day in bed because it made me feel so bad. Had stuff to do though so just got on with it but I was in bed by half 9

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/06/2020 13:55

Mine hits my sinuses and my whole face feels sore like someone has punched me. I get awful headaches.

It is debilitating. I have never gone to bed with it, largely because that's never been an option. But have spent evenings lying on the couch unable to function.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 24/06/2020 14:00

Itchy running eyes, constant runny nose and sneezing, skin rash, itchy inside my ears and in my throat, dry cough (which makes people eye me suspiciously at the moment). I’m keeping it at bay with anti histamines which you have to take every day from April to build up. If it gets bad despite the tablets, nose spray and eye drops I lie with a wet towelI over my face.

sillybean · 24/06/2020 14:01

Yep, can be really really bad and lead to terrible fatigue.

The aggressive sneezing, runny nose, itchy mouth, throat, ears and nose.

I'm almost 39 weeks pregnant so can't take the hard drugs, so have resorted to just not going out at the moment in order to avoid it.

Here's the nhs website on the symptoms:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/hay-fever/

I find Benydryll works well for me, along with beconase and Boots own eye drops. Showering every evening and wearing sunglasses when out help.

Alittlebitta · 24/06/2020 14:01

Ha! My Dh would have had a box of Piriton thrown at his head hours ago!

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 24/06/2020 14:02

I think if he's doing all her can in terms of medication, nasal sprays, eye drops, showering frequently, windows shut, etc etc then thats all you can ask really. It can be really awful and after a while it can also really get you down.

It sounds like you have a lot on your plate living with his family and trying to balance work and childcare, its really tough at the moment Flowers

thenightsky · 24/06/2020 14:06

Mine's been a bastard this year. Yesterday I took as many tablets as I could, but by lunchtime my left eye had closed up completely and my right was blurred and scratchy. My throat is on fire too and my ears itch somewhere deep inside. I want to pull my head off, rinse the inside with cool water and put it back on.

I find having a shower actually makes me worse. It washes the pollen out of my hair and straight into my eyes.

WingBingo · 24/06/2020 14:06

I’m hiding away in my office at the moment. Can’t complain.

Teawhite1 · 24/06/2020 14:07

Hi Op, really don't want to cause you any anxiety but are you sure it's hay fever? My DH suffers badly from hay fever and has been taking antihistamines and using an inhaler as he would at this time of year. On Monday he started coughing - completely normal for him with his hay fever but he also mentioned a banging headache and that his nose felt like it was on fire. Again, just thought it was hay fever as no temperature etc. Something just rang alarms bells as he wouldn't normally go to bed with hay fever. I made him go for a test yesterday and he was confirmed with the virus today.

It probably is just hay fever, especially as everyone is saying how bad the pollen is at the minute, but it's so difficult to distinguish symptoms that if in any doubt, it may be worth a test?

Sexnotgender · 24/06/2020 14:08

Mine can be awful, but it’s never rendered me bed bound. That feels a bit OTT.

The only time I’d consider taking to my bed is if the antihistamines I’d taken had made me drowsy. I react particularly to piriton and it makes me feel dreadful.

AriettyHomily · 24/06/2020 14:10

Last night and this morning I could very easily have taken myself to bed but I didn't because I have ids to deal with and work to get on with.

Head was pounding, blurry eyesight, the works. It's usually bad but not that bad.

I double dose on Lortadine and take Benadryl nasal spray through out the hayfever season, if I don't take the medication continuously it's practically impossible to get control over symptoms again.

If he normally get's hayfever why wasn't he taking medication?

WingBingo · 24/06/2020 14:30

He had run out of medication. He is asthmatic too so that doesn’t help.

Thanks for the heads up @Teawhite1 I’ll keep an eye on that.

Just been to check on him and he is asleep.
