Quick straw poll: would you put sunscreen on your child at 4pm today?

We are off to the park with friend.

I’m absolutely religious about sunscreen between the hours of 11 and 3.

Would you slather her in spf 30 (which is all I’ve got) to be outdoors 4-6pm today?

I’m in two minds! It feels crazy given that by about 5pm surely the sun is nowhere near strong enough to cause damage?

But am I irresponsible to let her be out in the sun without it?!

Please give me your advice!

Oh! She is 7, if that’s relevant...

I would. Sun is strong here today.

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/06/2020 15:14

No. Mine's 9 and fairly fair-skinned. They've been in too much and lacking sunshine.

Yes. You don't have to plaster it on thick though, a light application would probably do.

Lonelycrab · 23/06/2020 15:15

Yes

mylittlesandwich · 23/06/2020 15:17

I probably would if it was sunny but it's pishing it down here. I'm a bit pedantic though, me and DS are both a very pasty breed.

flamingochill · 23/06/2020 15:17

Yes
I've just come in and it's very sunny here.

GaraMedouar · 23/06/2020 15:17

Yes - it’s very hot still. I walked down to school pick up and thought I should have put more on just for 20 min (I had put some on this morning for the walk to school but none since)

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 23/06/2020 15:18

Thx everyone. She’s pretty fair. I will do light application on arms and hat to shield face. Her legs are very shaded as she likes to wear big floaty skirts.

Nope, I wouldn't at that time. I would keep them in a t shirt or rash vest though.

Bmidreams · 23/06/2020 15:19

Yes! Definitely!

TickleMeElbow · 23/06/2020 15:20

No, maybe a hat.

nosnugglesforyou · 23/06/2020 15:22

Why would the sun not cause damage at 5pm? If it’s hot it’ll burn. I get burnt later than that if I’m out without suncream

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/06/2020 15:25

Because the UV index is about 2 at 5pm. Makes no odds how hot it is.
ShyTown · 23/06/2020 15:29

No I wouldn’t because the UV index will be practically nothing. The weather on an iphone has the UV index if you want to check it before deciding.

mylittleyumyum · 23/06/2020 15:31

Depends what country I guess. Currently pissing down where I am.

TickleMeElbow · 23/06/2020 15:31

What mrstp said. I'lf you're on holiday in Spain and it's 30 degrees at night you don't need sun cream just because it's hot.

And you may well need sun creme in the winter if there snow on the ground

HollysBush · 23/06/2020 15:33

Yes I would

Thisismytimetoshine · 23/06/2020 15:34

No, let them get some vitamin D.

monkeyonthetable · 23/06/2020 15:34

No, but I very rarely use it unless Dc are out for long hours. We are a Vitamin D deficient nation. No need to use it at all unless they are likely to be burned.

Bmidreams · 23/06/2020 15:34

I think the people saying no have never sat in a beer garden after work.

Namechange8471 · 23/06/2020 15:36

I wouldn’t op, I’m usually very strict when it comes to sun screen but as pp said, they need vitamin d and have been in far too long.

Dd is also ginger and has never burned.

AnnaSW1 · 23/06/2020 15:37

Yes

mencken · 23/06/2020 15:43

fucksake, MN and science. Did nobody pay any attention at school?

latitude, time of year, altitude, cloud cover and clothing. Do you see air temperature in that? Of course not.

if you are in the UK, UV index for the next few days is 8, as high as it gets - it is late June. Sunset isn't until around 10pm. The sun does not suddenly switch off at 3pm.

bengalcat · 23/06/2020 15:44

I would it’s a sunny 28 degrees in London
