Gift ideas for teachers?

Tinks15 · 21/06/2020 21:24

Starting to think about what small little gift I can get for my little girls teacher in July when she leaves? I don’t want to spend a lot just something small to say thank you.
Didn’t want to go down the chocolates, flowers route. Anyone have any nice ideas?

Thank you

Gift cars for Sainsbury's.
Or, right now- Occitane hand cream. Mine are raw.

Thanosatemthamster · 21/06/2020 21:36

I normally do gift cards for Starbucks/costa, but not ideal just now! I'm sure a card from your week girl would be appreciated, and a nice soap would be good, given how much time we spend using the bloody things!

Thanosatemthamster · 21/06/2020 21:36

Wee girl, not week girl!

I've done it early while they are still at school. Sent via Amazon, handcream.

Our school have been really strict about bringing things in, cards/presents etc so it had to be delivered. Also couldn't be eatable or drinkable because they aren't allowed in the staff room.

Ricekrispie22 · 22/06/2020 05:20

A nice mug
Bracelet
Notebook or 2020-21 academic diary
Bath bombs
Whittard instant tea
Lightweight scarf

One mum has taken it upon herself to compose a song for the kids to sing onto their teacher in the last week of term. I think we're giving £2 to buy her something too.
Other DC will have the same teachers next year, so I'm not planning to give anything now. Or should I?

redbigbananafeet · 22/06/2020 06:18

Snigletted If you gift at end of year it's fo day thank you fir that year. And as to what to gift - wine

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 22/06/2020 06:23

I’m a teacher. Honestly best present - a heartfelt card.

daisypond · 22/06/2020 06:33

@Ricekrispie22

Absolutely none of those.

PurpleDaisies · 22/06/2020 06:37

I agree with dsisypond.

Every school I’ve worked in has given us free diaries. Instant tea is horrible. I have four billion mugs from previous pupils. I am allergic to all bath bombs and jewellery/scarves are such personal taste.

Obviously if anyone gave me a present I would say thanks but honestly, those sorts of things are just a pain to deal with.

Ideally, no present just a card thanks.

One of these would be a good little present!

QuarantineQueen · 22/06/2020 07:18

Seconding the nice hand cream. So much handwashing with the cheap and nasty school soap.

Snigletted · 22/06/2020 07:49

Would you also give a male teacher a hand cream? DS has three teachers, two women, one man. Give them all the same thing?

peanutbutter00 · 22/06/2020 07:52

I'm a teacher, I have so many mugs so please not mugs! Over the years the present I appreciated the most is a thank you card, I still have all of mine they are the loveliest gift

JustC · 22/06/2020 07:59

Booze or coffeeshop vouchers 😁. Im pretty sure they are all fed up with all the mugs, bracelets, chocolates etc after a few years of teaching.

BirdieDance · 22/06/2020 10:18

One of the nicest things you could do would be to send an email to the Headteacher about how well supported you have felt during this time by the class teacher. A bit of positive feedback is worth way more than a mug!

CMOTDibbler · 22/06/2020 10:28

I was thinking about this last week as I was going through my late mums accumulated stuff. In there, lovingly kept in its original envelope, was a card addressed to mums maiden name - so it predated 1968.
A little card, made by Theresa with a drawn picture of a girl and stuck on wool hair, and inside 'to the best teacher I ever had'.
All these years, mum had kept that, and pictures and cards made by other children from the many, many she'd taught.
So don't buy wine/chocs/a mug - get your children to make something themselves

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/06/2020 11:10

I would just fo a thoughtful card with a personal message to be honest OP. Voucher if you really want to gift something of monetary value, or things for the classroom- but it isn't necessary at all and the card is the best bit.

I used to teach and it probably sounds awful but all the tat at the end of the year was such a pain. You feel awful getting rid of it but who wants 30 'no. 1 teacher's mugs, plaques, framed poems etc at home and what can you actually do with the endless homemade bracelets or tea light holders etc. You honestly end up with so much stuff and it's never as personal as the giftee thinks. Dsis teaches and last year she got about 10 pot plants where the pot said 'thanks for helping me grow'. It is a waste of money. If you think about how many different children a teacher teaches over a teaching career, and the amount of gifting (Christmas is pretty full on as well) and the fact we likely have a normal sized house- nobody is keeping all these things and displaying them at home.

I used to end up giving most of it away too, boxes of biscuits/chocolates/wine to friends and family or the food bank. There is only so much you will want or need and I don't drink alcohol, tea, or coffee.

I do/did always keep the most thoughtful letters and thoughtful cards from students though, they are lovely.

shinegirl90 · 22/06/2020 19:47

Are you up for co-organizing it with other parents? My daughter's not at school yet - she's at nursery and we ended up using this thing called Thankbox for one of her teachers. thankbox.co

One of the parents sent me a link and we added a photo, message and chipped into a gift pot. Then it got sent her email. It was all online and I was glad I didn't have to do it, lol.

SkelingtonArgument · 22/06/2020 20:00

This is the perfect year to abandon gifts for teachers. Seize the opportunity and just make a card with a personal message. And email any praise to the head as well

Stella8686 · 22/06/2020 20:01

Book token/Amazon voucher. One of the mums from DS class has organised a collection for this. That way they can choose to spend it on them or school.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/06/2020 21:35

I'd be gobsmacked if I was bought any end of year gifts from my class this year, but they are only going to be in for one day a week for the next 3 weeks.

A lot of them haven't done any of the online learning, so it's not like their parents will appreciate how hard I've been working for that either.

Handcream is a good one at the moment - I had to give a spare tube that was a gift from Christmas to my male colleague as I had plenty, but he had never been given any, and was getting red raw hands from all the hand washing.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 22/06/2020 21:40

We never expect gifts and a card is fab. But if you are wanting to give something that would be welcome I'd suggest a WHSmith voucher. Every teacher I know likes either stationery or reading.

Tinks15 · 22/06/2020 21:44

Thanks everyone this has been really helpful! Will definitely do a thank you card with a personal message & may even do the headteacher thing also. Will decide about maybe a small gift like hand cream or something x
