Reusable Toilet Paper

autopilotpeach · 21/06/2020 06:00

So im thinking of changing over to resusable toilet paper to be eco friendly and save money, this would be for number 1 not number 2 Smile is there anyone here that has done this, would you recommend? I know they sell them online but was wondering if anyone knows any actual shops that sell reusable toilet paper in the uk?

@ErrolTheDragon

When we were at the start of lockdown, by way of experiment I used flannels for wees and to finish off with, minimising paper rather than replacing it. So the flannels weren't shitty, probably not really much different to underwear.
Did you continue with it? yes its more for minimising toilet paper, im not sure i could use them for number 2 aswell

Check out honour your flow for reusable sanitary towels.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/06/2020 09:47

Cheeky wipes certainly worked far better than baby wipes. With DS's food allergies it could take half a pack of babywipes to clean from neck to knee, but cheeky wipes only took 3-4.

Years later we still have a decent number of the best survivors and they do sometimes get used on bottoms. We normally use toilet paper, but sometimes a cloth tailing is no bad thing, and the pads aren't any more unpleasant than the DC's underwear if they haven't wiped effectively.

I use cloth sanitary pads and they are far nicer than plasticy, chemically disposable products. Most of the month they are washed as normal, and at the heavy duty time, just get a cold pre-wash seperately before a normal load.

I wouldn't want to use "reusable toilet paper" full time but if toilet paper takes the brunt of poos and reusable does wee and polishing, it's a good compromise.

OP I don't use the cheeky wipes for number 2s for my baby. I get most of it off with a biodegradable wipe and then the final wipe with the cheeky wipe.
I do a pre wash with my towels and wash them on 60. No excess washing.

Russellbrandshair · 21/06/2020 09:51

I don’t get this at all. To enable adequate hygiene you’d have to wash them at high temperature which uses MORE energy and has a larger carbon footprint!! What’s the point of that???
Not only that, you have to put up with a revolting bucket of ammonia stinking flannels.
Waste of time.

Northernsoullover · 21/06/2020 10:00

I'm another poster who tries their best to be as eco friendly as possible but I'm not going down the reusable bog roll route for a nano second. I rent at the moment but when I buy I plan on having a bidet installed.

What is not to love about a bidet? I stayed in a hotel in Spain last year and how convenient! Goodbye disco minge and problem period clean ups!

violetscone · 21/06/2020 10:02

Reusable sanitary towels? Why not get a cup instead?

bluefoxmug · 21/06/2020 10:13

we have a huge stack of flannels that we would use in case we ran out of toilet paper.
flannels are sturdy enough to take washing again and again.

we used flannels instead of wipes when dc were little, dc1 had eczema and reacted badly to wipes. and nowadays we use flannels in the bath/shower or to wash faces/remove make up.

I think it's good to be aware of alternatives but I can understand people being funny about that.

legalseagull · 21/06/2020 10:16

What's the point?! The washing process is far worse for the environment than some recycled toilet roll going down the loo. It's just paper. The propose of cheeky wipes is to replace baby wipes as they don't biodegrade or flush

ErrolTheDragon · 21/06/2020 10:19

Did you continue with it?

No, because DD returned from uni together with her BF and while the used flannels were not remotely 'ammonia stinking' (it's mere drops, nothing like a nappyload fgs) , I'm not sure DD would have been thrilled.Grin
I might go back to it when they're back at uni as it was nicer than slightly scratchy paper tbh, better cleaning with one corner moistened, the other dry.

Inforthelonghaul · 21/06/2020 10:21

You’re not washing wee soaked items though just a cloth that’s quickly wiped an already clean area just to dry it so I can’t see how that’s really dirty or unhygienic in any way and definitely no worse than underwear. It’s a great idea OP and I’m going to look into it.

longtimecomin · 21/06/2020 10:23

I am a fan of zero waste and this is a great idea. Imagine all the loo paper you've used in your life, it's still in the works, possibly degrading but it exists. At least with reusable wipes the waste is massively reduced. And the energy used to wash can come from green sources.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/06/2020 10:25

To enable adequate hygiene you’d have to wash them at high temperature which uses MORE energy and has a larger carbon footprint!!

Rinse in cold water and then do with the towels. Your mental image of the state of the flannels is probably based on nappies not a few drops of pee.
Apparently some blokes just shake rather than use loo roll - do they need to make a huge fuss about their kecks?

ErrolTheDragon · 21/06/2020 10:26

Imagine all the loo paper you've used in your life, it's still in the works, possibly degrading but it exists.

Think of all the energy harvesting and transporting trees, and turning them into loo roll in the first place.

SarahTancredi · 21/06/2020 10:33

If you are after reusable san pro then I highly recommend honor your flow and tcs eco.

Really didnt like the cheeky wipes ones. Honor your flow have a happy hour on sunday nights at 8 til 9 where they discount the products. Worth checking out. The lady who runs it is really nice

FrenchFancie · 21/06/2020 10:45

I’ve gone over to reusable sanpro. I couldn’t get one with a cup, after trying three different ones and finding them uncomfortable I gave up. Now use cheeky wipes cloth pads and a Dame reusable applicator and cotton tampons. It’s not 100% waste free but much less than previously.

I keep toying with the idea of reusable loo wipes - as someone pointed out, if you got poo on your hand you wouldn’t just wipe it off with a bit of kitchen roll!

buckeejit · 21/06/2020 12:34

Reusable sanitary towels - I have tried quite a few & the best are honour your flow. They have a maxi pad which is great - I used to have to get up in the night to change & no longer need to. So much more comfortable too

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 21/06/2020 12:39

I'd definitely go for a cup rather than reusable sanitary pads, but that's just because pads of any kind make me feel absolutely disgusting, to the extent that it genuinely impacts my mood. I always thought that i got low mood as a menstruation symptom, but it turns out actually once i started using tampons and then more recently a mooncup that sitting in a pool of my own blood just makes me feel completely miserable.

Clawdy · 21/06/2020 12:45

When I started periods in the early sixties, my mum gave me what she had always used - cut up pieces of old sheets or towels, to be pushed inside your knickers, then she'd boil them in a pan to re-use. I hated them so much. I'd never heard of sanitary towels till I went on a school trip, and a friend had one in her bag. After that, I wanted to use them ,so Mum reluctantly bought me a pack, and I never looked back. I'm sure the reusable ones today are nothing like the ones I had! But they still sound grim to me.

Ostanovka · 21/06/2020 12:59

We use cheeky wipes after a first wipe with toilet paper. I have to following a birth injury, and DC just carried on using them when they were out of nappies. No extra wash, I put them in with sheets and towels. Each to their own!

Apileofballyhoo · 21/06/2020 13:03

That's what my DM had too, Clawdy. Sanitary towels were a revelation to her. The ones with the belt!

ReallySeriouslyNope · 21/06/2020 13:05

I use modibodi period pants now and I can honestly say they have changed my life! I start wearing them a couple of days before my period is due when I first start to get that stomach ache. No more worrying about starting my period and the clothes I can wear. It's been liberating and I wish i'd done it years ago. I now think of all that plastic in my disposable san pro over the years and wince.

Prettyprettyplease · 21/06/2020 13:10

@LazyDaisy10

I use reusable sanitary towels, I've been using for a year or so and I wish I had switched years ago. They absorb so much more than disposable ones, much more comfortable and easy to wash and dry. I thought they would leak and stain but they are great! Not sure about the toilet roll though!
I'm also a recent convert to cloth pads, and I agree with all of this. Mine came from Cheeky Wipes, and I especially like the nighttime ones.
Russellbrandshair · 21/06/2020 14:25

Rinse in cold water and then do with the towels

When you shower you dont simply rinse in water so get properly clean so why on earth would you do that for flannels with urine on them? My point stands- the extra washing this creates negates the point of it.

Oldraver · 21/06/2020 14:31

Fleece can be used. Easy to cut up and doesn't fray
