Loo roll panic buying shaming: FALSE!

I panic bought loo roll over several stressful supermarket trips (ie, not intentionally). I’m not proud. Shortly after, and prompted by many media reports condemning me and my kind as solely responsible for the fall of a nation, I used that online calculator to assess how many months’ of rolls I’d selfishly seized from the hands of the vulnerable. I as horrified to find the 2x 16 packs and remainder of our usual supply would last the 3 of us until Christmas- 10 months.

Absolute bollocks! That was about 4 months ago and I think we’ll need more at the end of July.

I clearly bought way too much but that calculator was designed by someone who I imagine does not live with a toddler, does not menstruate and probably doesn’t use it when they pee...

That is all.

A 16 pack is our monthly shop we’re a larger family.

A few days ago when DP came back from the shops he said loo roll was on discount and attributed it to the panic buying so people aren’t buying loo roll now. He was quite pleased with his bargain 😆

I couldn’t get worked up about the dearth of loo roll, our corner shop had enough and were selling at the normal price any way.

one roll a week for two adults

Even when it was just me and dh we used one every 1-2 days. How does one last a week? Is there a secret type of super loo roll I'm unaware of?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/06/2020 07:31

We use about one roll a week. Me and DS at home.

I would like to contribute my findings.

Tesco Spring Force toilet roll is perfectly fine, and does a greqt job, I used to only use Andrex.

I do not work for Tesco BTW!

MojoJojo71 · 21/06/2020 07:42

I buy a 4 pack about once a month. There’s only me and DD and I’m still going to work and she’s at school so I guess we might use a bit more if we were home all day but I can’t get over posters saying they use one a day! What on Earth are you doing with it?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/06/2020 09:25

@ElizabethMainwaring, you use toilet roll to pull hair out of combs and brushes? Why? How?

Using it to clean floors and mirrors sounds a bit mad too, have you never heard of a cloth?

ElizabethMainwaring · 21/06/2020 09:45

@BarbaraofSeville Just used for a quick wipe of water spills after a bath etc.
I have heard of a cloth.
I lose a lot of hair unfortunately.
Wish I'd not mentioned it now!

Fatted · 21/06/2020 09:54

We easily get through a toilet roll a day. Especially now we're all at home more. I have no idea what DH does in the toilet for 20 minutes at a time, perhaps he is secreting toilet roll in various orifices. Who knows. My kids tend to use too much when they go.

My mum doesn't visit ATM but when she does, I am convinced she eats it she uses so much.

WinningEveryDay · 21/06/2020 10:05

This is MN.

You'll have people saying a couple with no DC go through a roll a day and 2 pints of milk and others saying a roll and a pint of milk lasts a family of 4 a week.

Looneytune253 · 21/06/2020 10:09

Wow I actually use a 9 pack every week in my house.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/06/2020 10:18

Elizabeth I also lose a lot of hair but I still can't see the need or advantage of using toilet paper to pull the hair out of my hairbrush or the drain after a shower either.

VettiyaIruken · 21/06/2020 10:19

Flipping heck. We get through a 12 pack a week. Sometimes more . How do people manage to stretch it so far?

EmbarrassedUser · 21/06/2020 10:20

That’s a crap calculator. My DS seems to use half a loo roll every time he takes a dump.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 21/06/2020 10:31

I honestly have no idea how much we use (family of 4). We buy a new pack when we get down to the last 1 or 2 in the basket.

I wouldn't be using it for cleaning though. For wiping mirrors use a dry microfibre cloth when you've just got out of the shower and they're all steamy.

KizzyWayfarer · 21/06/2020 10:44

FancyPants20 One sheet for a wee sounds a bit grim and soggy, but two for a poo! Do you not have any fibre in your diet? Clearly some people have totally different internal plumbing from me...

PajamasnoDramas · 21/06/2020 10:59

The calculator states that one roll lasts one person 12 days Shock

Must be a bloke then. When I lived by myself I would use a roll up in about 5 days. And I work full time so most wees were wiped at work, no bowel or other conditions either.

GracieLane · 21/06/2020 12:02

Doesn't make any allowance for the one my kids used as pet bedding for their toys while I was making tea yesterday, or the one which my toddler put down the toilet this morning, or the one which got drowned when I gave my 3 kids a bath the other day (I usually put it on a shelf while they have a bath but forgot on this occasion) so that's 3 rolls that didn't even touch a bum this week! I reckon we get though 3-4 a week at the moment, if there are none wasted, but only because of the number of baby wipes my potty training toddler uses instead. Once he's trained all bets are off!

GracieLane · 21/06/2020 12:04

When I lived by myself I would buy a four roll pack from the supermarket every fortnight, but usually had to grab another 2 rolls from the convenience store before my fortnightly supermarket shop came round again, maybe two if my period fell in that time. I don't clean with it though.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 21/06/2020 12:09

kizzy I too have the incorrect anatomy because one sheet for a wee would be just as effective as wiping with the back of my hand. 🤮
