Going to the shop barefoot

Lemonmaid · 20/06/2020 15:58

Apologies for the possibly pearl clutching thread. I went to my local shop today (small supermarket) and the woman who went in just before me was completely barefoot, and remained barefoot around the shop.

Is this grim or is it just me who thinks so?

Bare foot is legal in the US Grin

@SonjaMorgan

I always drive barefooted in the summer, in isn't possible for me to drive in Birkenstocks. I love not wearing shoes, I don't really know why it matters.
Yep, me too. Love driving in bare feet!
PotteringAlong · 20/06/2020 17:53

I’ve done this before - no shoes all day, forgot to put them on before I got in the car, wasn’t going to drive home again.

Bertucci · 20/06/2020 17:57

It’s very scummy, the same as blokes going in without a shirt.

We have a co-op about a mile away on a rough estate and it’s exactly the sort of thing you see in there.

Eckhart · 20/06/2020 17:59

@Bertucci

How do you define 'scummy'?

Mumoblue · 20/06/2020 18:02

It's pretty gross.
I hate having stuff on my feet and walk around my house barefoot all day. Occasionally I'll go out in the garden barefoot if I'm just nipping out for something.
But nobody wants to see the dirty soles of your bare feet when they're shopping.

falcon5 · 20/06/2020 18:05

I like being barefoot. However since I was a kid I was always told (different country) that you shouldn't go barefoot on the tarmac in town where there might be rat piss because of leptospirosis... so I wouldn't walk in the supermarket car park or aurroundings bare foot because of that.

LivingTheCliffEdge · 20/06/2020 18:10

Bare foot is legal in the US

I would not want to see Donald Trump's bare feet, or anything else for that matter. Now, that would be grim.

And I agree with pps - topless men in public away from beaches or pools is far, far, more grim than someone without shoes in a shop.

userabcname · 20/06/2020 18:50

Feet are far more hygienic than bottoms of shoes! I'd go barefoot all the time if I could. This wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Bunnymumy · 20/06/2020 18:59

Ooh I've never seen anyone do this!

I used to walk home through the city barefoot after a night out (not even because of heels, just because I enjoyed it) but would never have thought to go into an establishmebt barefoot. Probably because youd think they wouldn't want you to incase you hot hurt.

Bit risky isnt it? Some big fat edjit might stand on your foot xD

I dont think its 'grim' though. They are just feet.

ParisOnWheels · 20/06/2020 19:16

I use a wheelchair. I used to go everywhere barefoot in summer if I knew I wouldn’t be getting out of my chair. I can’t do it now for medical reasons and I miss it when it’s really hot.

rosiethehen · 20/06/2020 19:17

She was probably grounding.

AdelaideK · 20/06/2020 19:18

I love being bare foot but I wouldn't go round the supermarket like that. I'd just stick flip flops on and take them off as soon as I got in

Rockbird · 20/06/2020 19:20

I love being barefoot at home but am a klutz so would be guaranteed to step on glass if I went barefoot round town. I don't care if anyone else goes barefoot, not my business. As others said she's not touching the fresh produce with her feet (presumably) so whatever.

Obviouspretzel · 20/06/2020 19:47

How rude to call someone scummy for this. Just because it isn't what you would do, doesn't make it wrong.

Many people go shoeless in other countries , are they all scummy ?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 20/06/2020 20:04

my driving instructor told me I could go barefoot during one lesson once, I was wearing sandals that kept sliding off. You’d think she’d know if that was a no no

I had bare feet for all of my driving lessons, and for my test. Nether the instructor nor examiner remarked on it.

(It was a few years before I could comfortably drive in shoes Grin)

Fattyboom · 20/06/2020 23:19

FWIW I would much rather go barefoot and always do at home, the only time I have put shoes on since lockdown is to go to the shops.

TuMeke · 20/06/2020 23:44

Blimey. Most of you would hate living in NZ then - it is totally normal for people to be barefoot all the time here. Including in supermarkets and when driving.
And indeed children walking to and from school; I remember reading a BBC(?) article a few years ago in which the author cited seeing barefoot schoolchildren as evidence of our (genuinely concerning) problems with child poverty, totally misunderstanding that it’s a cultural norm here for children at all socio-economic levels.
Anyway, we wash our feet pretty regularly, so it’s all fine Grin

Leglump · 20/06/2020 23:51

Notwithstanding Kiwis, it irritates me here in the U.K. because barefoot types are usually very “oh look how individual and quirky I am.” Confused

PickAChew · 20/06/2020 23:54

Absolutely grim.

PickAChew · 20/06/2020 23:55

TuMeke, you haven't seen the average UK pavement, then.

Malin52 · 21/06/2020 00:00

@tumeke was just coming on the day the same thing! Here in NZ it's completely normal to go everywhere barefoot. Shops, bars, restaurants. Children walk to school barefoot. A pic of school kids in the local paper revealed at least half of them barefoot.

I adore it. It never occurred to me to be 'unhygienic'. How is that possible when ifeet are washed (usually)daily compared to a shoe?!

Strange.

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 21/06/2020 00:01

Totally normal here in New Zealand. I am guessing by the reactions that it's not so normal in the UK 😂

MiniMum97 · 21/06/2020 00:03

That's just because it's cold here. Fairly normal in many hot countries for people to do all sorts of things bare foot.

Of course it's not unhygienic. That is an absolutely ridiculous suggestion.

Sunnydays123456 · 21/06/2020 00:05

I saw a man in Sainsbury’s today barefoot!

Gross and weird !
