Going to the shop barefoot

Lemonmaid · 20/06/2020 15:58

Apologies for the possibly pearl clutching thread. I went to my local shop today (small supermarket) and the woman who went in just before me was completely barefoot, and remained barefoot around the shop.

Is this grim or is it just me who thinks so?

Her feet must be a festering pool of dirt and germs

Dont lick them then 🤷‍♂️

yes some countries they do this alot but i couldnt bare it-what if she steps in glass or something and right now its jsut not hygenic

Samtsirch · 20/06/2020 16:42

I suppose it depends on why she was barefooted.

midgebabe · 20/06/2020 16:43

May need to name change after this

In my younger days I did this once, totally by mistake, I just didn't notice until on my way home , perhaps triggered by some odd looks

tatyr · 20/06/2020 16:44

As someone who used to do a lot of bare footing, I'm not sure why you need to clutch your pearls. I doubt she was touching produce you were going to purchase with her feet.

If you walk around bare footed you accept the risks that presents. I wouldn't have complained to a shop if I stood on glass on their premises, I chose to be there barefoot. My feet got washed many more times that your shod feet get washed, and I did not touch my food or face with my feet.

I guess you probably also would boak at my 'gardeners hands' which are also discoloured and grubby a lot of the time. I'm not planning to hand feed you so you don't need to worry!

Why do people go barefoot? It's a sensory experience like no other. It feels good and grounding, it makes you aware of the earth and trading lightly upon it. You become very tuned in to where you are walking so it's quite rare to step on something unpleasant.

Yuk

Glowcat · 20/06/2020 16:46

Her manky feet are her business but I’d imagine most supermarket type shops wouldn’t be happy with barefoot customers because of the risk of them slipping or cutting their feet on broken glass if something is dropped.

midgebabe · 20/06/2020 16:47

Slightly curious however, why are the bottom of feet washed at least daily manky, whilst the soles of shoes, never washed, ok?

GinnyStrupac · 20/06/2020 16:49

I haven't seen it or done it in the UK, except close to beaches, but I don't find it grim and it doesn't harm anyone else.

I agree it depends where you grew up. It's quite common in NZ, for example, for both adults and children, including in stores, the street and at school.

Palavah · 20/06/2020 16:49

Unless she was treading on the fresh produce YABU

Soubriquet · 20/06/2020 16:51

I would rather someone walk through a shop barefoot, than someone walk through topless like some men do during summer

Especially when they are sweating like mad

mumwon · 20/06/2020 16:52

I grew up overseas & we use to go bare foot or wear flipflops (& there were loads of poisonous spiders & insects!) The only issue was when the tarmac started to melt or walking over the lawn (dried up grass) with bindi! Wouldn't think of it now though!

LynetteScavo · 20/06/2020 16:58

So what?

In the summer it's perfectly fine, unless she steps on glass. In my youth I often took of my heels and walked home from a night out barefoot. Nothing bad ever happened.

lootsharks · 20/06/2020 16:58

@dappledsunshine

Eww why would you do this? Her feet must be a festering pool of dirt and germs 😱
Her feet will get washed more often than the bottom of your shoes so I doubt it.
Cattermole · 20/06/2020 16:58

God I am known for not wearing shoes. I used to be known as "that girl with no shoes on" in a number of goth clubs. I hate shoes. (A necessary evil but...)
Mind, I have prehensile toes and can write ny name holding a pen in my toes.
I have a bath every night, too....

SockYarn · 20/06/2020 16:58

I wouldn't say it was "grim". Weird perhaps. Uncomfortable and risky possibly.

She is no more likely to be spreading germs around the supermarket from her feet as you are from your shoes.

IrmaFayLear · 20/06/2020 17:00

I believe it is illegal to drive barefoot; I wonder how many people flout this rule... (just musing)

Feet are quite grim. Well, any feet above toddler age.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 20/06/2020 17:00

Why is this place so completely plagued by posters judging other people for things that don't affect anybody else in the slightest?

And why are they always looking for validation for their nonsense and a tribe of like-minded frothers to chum up with?

RickOShay · 20/06/2020 17:01

I sometimes do this Grin

Crunched · 20/06/2020 17:03

The strange thing is, it makes me feel awkward when a person near me has bare feet in an ‘unexpected’ place. It kind of makes me think I will be unable to avoid treading on their toes! Not sure why I feel like that though.

NerrSnerr · 20/06/2020 17:05

Her feet are probably less grim than the soles of shoes. I have never washed the bottom of my shoes but I washed my feet this morning.

I don't understand why it would be grim for others? It's up to her and the shop- if shoes are on their dress code then they can stop her. Makes no odds to me as a fellow customer.

BoxAndKnife · 20/06/2020 17:05

Why is it grim? Unless he was sorting through the veg with her feet I don't see the issue. You don't have to look at her feet.

Agree with the pp who said the men who walk around supermarkets without shirts on are far worse.

Being barefoot is lovely.

BoxAndKnife · 20/06/2020 17:06

*she was sorting Grin

EmperorCovidula · 20/06/2020 17:08

Was this by the beach/just off a park by any chance? I’m not even remotely averse to going barefoot on a natural surface, apparently it’s good for you. I have on occasion gone off to get something and didn’t realise until I was nearly at the shop/cafe that I didn’t have my shoes so just went in barefoot. But it’s quite uncomfortable on pavement which can get hot or asphalt which is surprisingly painful to walk on. I certainly don’t see how it’s more gross than collecting years worth of germs on your shoes and walking them around.
