The north needs HS2

lisajane1966 · 20/06/2020 13:59

There is poor employment in the North with little opportunities for jobs or career development. We need big business up here and and quick travel down to the Capital. I understand the enviromental issues and the reason for the forthcoming march from Birmingham. What do we do in the backwater whilst Cental England flourishes. Bring on HS2 I am all for it.

I agree

RedCatBlueCat · 20/06/2020 14:08

Its not really coming north tho, is it? Look how much of England (and yes, I'm deliberately excluding Scotland, which is massive) is further north than HS2 is coming.

AliasGrape · 20/06/2020 14:09

Did you mean to post this in relationships?

Herdwick · 20/06/2020 14:14

It's an East to West rail link we need not another North to South.

Is this causing you problems in your relationship? Grin

LouMumsnet · 20/06/2020 14:16

Hi there, @lisajane1966 - we're just bobbing on here to let you know that we've moved this over to our Chat topic as we're pretty sure you didn't mean to post it in Relationships. Grin

Give us a shout if we can help further.

vinoandbrie · 20/06/2020 14:26

The North needs an East - West link more than a North - South one. HS2 isn’t worth the squeeze.

Pelleas · 20/06/2020 14:30

No, we need the existing rail network to be improved. Longer/more platforms so trains don't stand waiting to get into the main stations. The new trains we keep being promised but which have only been rolled out on flagship lines. Longer trains on Cross Country/West Coast network and do something about the bottlenecks along the way. Proper food defences so lines don't become unusable in winter.

Pelleas · 20/06/2020 14:31

Flood defences, not food defences.

lachy · 20/06/2020 14:31

HS2 isn't needed, it's a vanity project.

What is needed is the digital infrastructure to allow business to operate throughout a range of locations the UK and and support their employees to work from home.

By the time HS2 is built, the advances in technology will pretty much render it useless as a commuter service.

Well according to Scotish people you are not English, you are Scotish, I was talking about it going to the Capital of Leeds. Scotland is like Wales seperate - you get free uni education as does Wales. Also free prescriptions which we do not in England. Nicola Sturgeon hates the Capital of London and is always stating that Scotland is a seperate Country. BBBUUUTTT no it is not going true north.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/06/2020 14:58

HS2 will be coming right through the town Iive in, with a hub about a mile away. (East midlands). We certainly don't need it here when you can get to London in 90 minutes on the existing railway, not to mention all the houses and wildlife that are going to be destroyed to make way for it. Entire streets are in line to be demolished and the homeowners have not been offered fair compensation.

I don't think it's necessary at all, particularly now it's looking that WFH will be the future for many companies after this pandemic.

That won't give business opportunities to provide jobs to Leeds though or the surrounding area, and also I know people are working from home at the moment, but that is because Covid has made it necessary, single people are being affected working from home if they have no family around them.

No thanks. Its planned to run through a village near us destroying people's homes, a beautiful farm who are a working farm as well as holding millions of activities for kids and doing all sorts of eco stuff.

None of the people affected by this shit show will use it and that's what I find unfair.

Well I like further up north East Midlands is an hour and a half away from me.

It's an environmental disaster and and it's far too expensive.

I do feel very sad for it destroying your homes, but the an hour from Leeds further north is Bradford, which has very low emloyment a large ethnic community, and has been very deprived for the past 30 years, we do need to let people comute from up her as well for jobs too.
OP posts:
Starisnotanumber · 20/06/2020 15:48

The North doesn't just need HS2 it needs a direct connection to eurostar and with that the rest of Europe.
It's all very well saying there are numerous airports but for businesses it would help.
People say oh its just a short way across London between stations but having to get off find your way and get through security in London seems stupid.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/06/2020 15:49

A lot of businesses will be making WFH permanent now though.

No offence but I think you're very naive. The deprived people you speak of won't be able to afford to set foot on this train.

lisajane1966 · 20/06/2020 15:50

@Enormouscroc

I came on to say exactly what *@lachy* said , so no need to repeat.
Working from home may seem like the ideal solution, my daughter lives away, is on her own and has been forced to work and be on her own as an I.T person for the past 3 months it is not an ideal solution not to have social activity.

Jaxhog · 20/06/2020 15:51

Wouldn't the money be better spent on increasing the employment situation by supporting businesses in the North instead? People and goods don't have to be transported between the North and South to do that. It's just a massive vanity project.
