Honestly... what do you think when you see fat people running?

I am overweight, really overweight! And I have huge issues about my body and health. I need to do something about this, more for my own health and confidence than anything else. I used to be very fit and run a lot, and I love running. So as well as eating healthly etc I have been trying to take up running (well walking and running in intervals) again. But even when I try to choose quiet times and quiet places I am always so embarrassed when someone sees me, I just think they are laughing as this overweight, almost 40 yr old puffing and panting away.... so that's my question really, in absolute honesty what do you think when you see larger/ overweight people running?

I'd think 'good on you for making proactive steps to be healthy'. You'd have my utmost respect.

Letshavesometea · 20/06/2020 09:56

I think - good for them!

Namechange7654321 · 20/06/2020 09:56

I think it’s great! ‘Good on you’

I wish I had the will power, enthusiasm and knees to get up and exercise.

wildthingsinthenight · 20/06/2020 09:57

I think "Good for you!"

Plastictree · 20/06/2020 09:57

I always think 'good on her'. You will get some idiots but ignore. Good luck Daffodil

susiella · 20/06/2020 09:57

I think 'good for him/her' and wish I had their determination.

Brabera · 20/06/2020 09:57

I think ‘good on you, take care with your knees’

TheGroak · 20/06/2020 09:57

I either don’t notice or I think ‘good for you Lady!’

HelmutShmacker · 20/06/2020 09:57

I would think good on you for getting out and getting fit. I wouldn't give it anymore thought than that really. We all have to start somewhere!

Hippofrog · 20/06/2020 09:58

I’m overweight and I’ve started very brisk walking (Long walks that get me out if puff) and healthy eating. I’m going to attempt to run when I’ve reduced the impact on my knees.

TippledPink · 20/06/2020 09:58

I always think good for them! It's positive to see someone trying to be healthier and get fit.

SHAR0N · 20/06/2020 09:59

I’m a runner in my 50s and I’d think “ good for you”.

It makes me feel happy that another person is discovering the joy of running and getting fitter.

I’m also pleased that you are improving your own health and reducing the demand on the NHS.

ScribblingMilly · 20/06/2020 09:59

I think, good for you. A lot of women run around my way, all sizes, and because I'm dog walking I see some regularly as they get fitter and stronger. To be honest, my heart goes out to the ones who are struggling & panting especially in the heat, but it all seems part of a normal process, not in any way comical.

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/06/2020 09:59

I see many - lots of people have started running in lockdown! I usually think 'I wonder if she will say hello as she goes past'. Then I think 'what a nice friendly person/oh dear' depending on the result.

It's all pretty equal when we're out there pounding the road, sweaty and red faced.

clairedunphy · 20/06/2020 10:00

I think how brave that person is, because I know that sadly you're likely to get rude comments from a minority of people. But if you can close your ears to that (or wear earphones), remember that the majority are hugely impressed and most likely annoyed with themselves for not doing the same.

AlexandPea · 20/06/2020 10:00

I feel envious that they’ve got the motivation to do it!

Knackerelli · 20/06/2020 10:00

I am that person! If I ever see someone out running first of all I think do I know them? ( I’m part of a club) and secondly I wish I was running. That’s it! Disclaimer: I sometimes also wish I could run as fast as them but that’s it. No judgment here, we’re all trying our best and getting out there.

Iggi999 · 20/06/2020 10:00

Almost 40! Heaven help us! There will be twats who make comments, hopefully in their heads. But they do this to any woman having the audacity to be outside doing something that doesn't involve a man. Do what you enjoy OP someone will judge no matter what so make sure you live for yourself.
If I run in warm weather I do turn bright red which I'm sure is amusing to look at so avoiding the midday sun might make you more comfortable!

Bairnsmum05 · 20/06/2020 10:01

I'm jealous! I can't run and would love to be able to run. I just don't have the coordination 😂 well done you!!

Binterested · 20/06/2020 10:01

When I see myself in a shop window you mean ?Grin

I’m overweight and I’ve been running for years. I’ve had no comments but a lot of enjoyment. If I saw you I’d think ‘well done lady’

Somethingkindaoooo · 20/06/2020 10:01

I think 'good on you're

And then I tell myself I'm a lazy git

Burplecutter · 20/06/2020 10:01

I think "fantastic, good on you." I always want to cheer them on like you would if it was an organised race but that's inappropriate so I never do.

Somethingkindaoooo · 20/06/2020 10:01

*you

TwoZeroTwoZero · 20/06/2020 10:02

Whenever I see any jogger I always think how pained they look because they seem to all just grimace! That's about as far as my thoughts go.
