Honestly... what do you think when you see fat people running?

I am overweight, really overweight! And I have huge issues about my body and health. I need to do something about this, more for my own health and confidence than anything else. I used to be very fit and run a lot, and I love running. So as well as eating healthly etc I have been trying to take up running (well walking and running in intervals) again. But even when I try to choose quiet times and quiet places I am always so embarrassed when someone sees me, I just think they are laughing as this overweight, almost 40 yr old puffing and panting away.... so that's my question really, in absolute honesty what do you think when you see larger/ overweight people running?

I would think, great, well done, ignore any comments from others. It does get easier.

saturdaymorning · 20/06/2020 10:02

I have a little smile on my face thinking brilliant good for them, and hope I see them a few months later when they're notably slimmer Smile

Kidssendingmenuts · 20/06/2020 10:02

I'd say good on you and your making the effort!

I don’t think about it. Usually distracted by herding children around and my tasks for the day.
Well done for getting out there though. The only way you’ll lose weight is by exercising and changing your diet. Great for the body and mind.

2007Millie · 20/06/2020 10:02

Good for you!

Stressedout1980 · 20/06/2020 10:02

I would absolutely think good on you, and then feel enormous guilt that I am not doing any exercise.

DannyDonut · 20/06/2020 10:03

Honestly, really admiring. I do feel a pang of hurt for larger woman running late at night so that no one sees them, I so want to say please don’t feel that way!
A larger friend always says she gets lots of encouraging smiles from other women serious runners.
But do watch your knees & go for it!

ProfessorLayton1 · 20/06/2020 10:03

Good on them, hope they get fitter and healthy!
Go for it..it is for your benefit and don't give a damn about what others think Smile

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 20/06/2020 10:03

I think “Good on you!” I had to stop running six years ago due to Arthritis and I’m so jealous, I loved running!

MsTSwift · 20/06/2020 10:03

Total admiration.

Tbh sadly most women out running or cycling get some stupid comments whether you are a supermodel type or not

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 20/06/2020 10:03

Good for you.

Every single time.

Ughmaybenot · 20/06/2020 10:03

Fair play, wish I could. I’ve shit joints and am categorically banned from running, which is a shame.

FromTheAllotment · 20/06/2020 10:04

I think “ugh, I really should exercise”. But that’s what I think when I see anyone running.

saturdaymorning · 20/06/2020 10:05

Just to add that if you don't do it now because your embarrassed then you never will and also people won't notice, all sorts of people run so it really isn't a big deal to anyone else but I get that it's huge to you.

Good luck and let us know how to get on x

crazybutkind · 20/06/2020 10:06

Good on them, they are doing more than me

boymum9 · 20/06/2020 10:06

I either don't even think about it or I think it's great and good on that person! I used to be a personal trainer and would also like to add that anywhere I ever worked, with anyone I ever worked with, I never came across anyone who I worked with judging anyone in the gym either

HouseOfPaper · 20/06/2020 10:06

A question id like to ask is what do you think very you see a very slim/ boardering on underweight person running? I'm slightly underweight but would like to go running to improve my fitness but get so worried in case people look at me and think I'm strange for running lol.

In regards to your question OP, I wouldn't even notice, not in a negative way, just in a way that people are normally just thinking of themselves/in their own world! Maybe I should take my own advice!

LouLouLoo · 20/06/2020 10:06

Yep, only positive thoughts. I started running about 18 months ago and I have to say that other runners are (without exception so far) encouraging and friendly.

PurpleDaisies · 20/06/2020 10:06

I don’t think anything at all. I don’t really pay attention.

Amrythings · 20/06/2020 10:06

Honestly anyone I see running it's 95% "Go on you girl you!" and about 5% of the time its that and "Must not stop people to explain about sports bras".

There's a lot of ladies round here who have taken up running but don't have bras up to the endeavour, and oh god I don't know how they're not in agony.

AdriannaP · 20/06/2020 10:07

I think good for them - I should go for a run too. Nothing but respect.

Btw my friend who is very slim and fit also huffs and puffs running. It’s just what it is.

Thisismytimetoshine · 20/06/2020 10:07

Honestly, nothing more than "fair fucks to you". Go for it.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/06/2020 10:07

I’d think, “hello, fellow runner” Smile
I’ve had comments from twats - usually from the safety of their car/van. And that’s been when I was slim and when I was bigger 🤷‍♀️
Pay no heed - good for you getting out there.

BlusteryShowers · 20/06/2020 10:07

I think good on them.

5LeafPenguin · 20/06/2020 10:08

I think 'there's a runner that looks like a normal person running'. Then I think 'I could run, maybe I should start running.....' then I remember that running looks quite hard work and go back to thinking about other stuff.
